The awakening and the Energy Storms#

The awakening process turned out to be too slow: the Ignika's countdown to the death of the universe would run out first. Frequently asked questions

What is Karda Nui?
Karda Nui was the core of the Matoran universe, a vast enclosed dome that supplied the light and energy the universe ran on. It was called the world that feeds the world, and it held the Codrex.
Who lived in Karda Nui?
The Av-Matoran first lived there long ago, guarded by the Toa Mata, before moving to caves above the core. During the Great Cataclysm several huge stalactites fell, bringing some of their villages down with them to rest on the stalactite tops, and the Av-Matoran rebuilt them as the Sky Villages.
Why did the Makuta come to Karda Nui?
Teridax ordered an invasion of the core. The Makuta wanted to turn the Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran, so that no more Toa of Light could be made, and to control what happened to Mata Nui. Shadow leeches drained the Matoran's light, and Gavla was the first to be converted.
What was the Swamp of Secrets in Karda Nui?
The Swamp of Secrets formed on Karda Nui's floor after Voya Nui rocketed loose in the Great Cataclysm. Sea water carrying the Pit mutagen poured through the hole in the dome as a giant waterfall and turned the sandy floor into a swamp that mutated those who entered it.
What happened to Karda Nui at the end of the war?
When the Toa Nuva awakened Mata Nui, the Energy Storms returned and destroyed everything in the core except the Codrex. Takanuva had already sent the Av-Matoran to safety, and the Toa Nuva escaped, but the Makuta who stayed were killed.
