The Kanohi Avsa was the Mask of Hunger. It granted its wearer the ability to drain moral light, physical energy, or positive emotions from a single target across a distance. Stolen physical energy was converted directly into the wearer's own physical capability. The mask was most closely associated with Makuta Vamprah, who wore the Great Avsa during the Karda Nui campaign.

Mask Power#

The Avsa drained one of three categories from a target at the wearer's choice: moral light, physical energy, or positive emotions. The three drained effects functioned as separate options selectable by the wearer, allowing the Avsa to be used as a debilitating weapon against multiple kinds of targets and for multiple purposes. The mask operated across a distance, eliminating the need for the wearer to engage in close combat.

The drain was not passive. Stolen physical energy was converted into the wearer's own physical capability, with the result that an Avsa user who had recently drained a Toa or Makuta was measurably more dangerous in combat than one who had not. The mask functioned simultaneously as a debilitating attack on the target and as a personal enhancement for the user, with both effects triggered by a single application.

The most extreme application of the Avsa was the imposition of a mind barrier. If the wearer drained all of a target's light at once, the mask could install a mental seal preventing the light from returning. A being subjected to this effect retained no inner light. The seal was not self-correcting and required external intervention to remove.

The known counter to the mind barrier was the sonic scream of a Klakk. The Klakk's vocalisation could break the seal and allow the drained light to return. This was the mechanism later used to reverse the conversion of Shadow Matoran created by Vamprah's Avsa in Karda Nui.

Use Against Kopaka#

The first recorded combat use of the Avsa took place during the Karda Nui campaign. Pohatu had engaged the Makuta and been thrown to the ground by Chirox, who summoned a creature during the encounter. Kopaka and Lewa arrived on the scene, and during the resulting battle Vamprah used the Avsa to drain Kopaka's physical energy. Kopaka collapsed without Vamprah closing the distance between them.

The sequence demonstrated the operational role of the Avsa within the Karda Nui Makuta's combat doctrine. Vamprah, Antroz, and Chirox operated as a coordinated team, with Vamprah's mask providing range-based incapacitation while the others handled direct engagement. Vamprah's response to Chirox's earlier doubts about the Karda Nui mission had cited the drained Matoran as evidence that the operation was proceeding correctly.

Lewa recognised the danger and acted to disengage. He refused to answer the Makuta's questions about the locations of the other Toa, summoned a gust of wind to knock the three Makuta back, and escaped with Tanma. Withdrawal from Vamprah's line of sight was the only effective counter available to the Toa in that engagement.

Conversion of Radiak#

The second recorded application of the Avsa took place against the Av-Matoran Radiak. Vamprah used the mask to drain Radiak's light completely and imposed the mind barrier, converting him into a Shadow Matoran. The conversion was the full realisation of the mask's most extreme effect, applied to a Matoran rather than to a Toa.

Radiak became one of the Shadow Matoran operating with the Karda Nui Makuta. He rode with Antroz and functioned as part of the Brotherhood's airborne strike force. The conversion was not reversible by means available to the Toa Nuva at the time of the attack. Radiak's reappearance among the Av-Matoran village shortly after the incident, claiming injury, served as concealment for the new alignment rather than evidence of recovery.

The conversion was eventually reversed when Takanuva made use of a Klakk to break the mind barrier. The Klakk's scream restored the drained light and allowed Radiak to return to his original state. The same method was used to recover the other Shadow Matoran created during the Karda Nui campaign.

Vamprah as Wearer#

The Avsa existed in Great, Noble, and powerless versions. The only confirmed wearer of the Great Avsa was Makuta Vamprah. His mask was constructed from protosteel and shifted with him whenever he employed his shapeshifting abilities, a property documented in the Brotherhood's records of his equipment.

The Avsa was considered an immoral mask by the Toa, who would not under normal circumstances choose to wear one. No captured Avsa was reissued to any Toa during the Karda Nui campaign or afterward. The mask remained associated specifically with the Brotherhood of Makuta throughout its recorded history.

The other named Avsa user was the Shadow Matoran Gavla. She wore a powerless Kanohi Avsa in its Noble shape and carried two blades. After Vamprah was permanently blinded by the brightness of Mata Nui's revival, he chose Gavla as one of the Shadow Matoran guides the three air Makuta required to continue operating. Gavla's Avsa was a marker of her role within the Karda Nui operation rather than an active weapon.

End of the Mask's Use#

Vamprah was killed in the Energy Storm at the conclusion of the Karda Nui campaign, alongside the other surviving Makuta of his coalition. With his death, the active use of the Great Avsa ended. No subsequent wearer of the mask is recorded in surviving accounts of the Matoran Universe's final years.

The Avsa's confirmed combat record consists of two recorded deployments: the strike on Kopaka and the conversion of Radiak. Both demonstrated the mask's capabilities at full power, and both were carried out by Vamprah during the Karda Nui campaign. The Klakk's role in reversing the conversion of Shadow Matoran provided the only known counter to the mask's most extreme effect.
