The Mask of Life (Kanohi Ignika), explained

A failsafe forged by the Great Beings to recharge a god. It curses everyone who touches it, and by the end of Bionicle it had learned how to be a hero.

Comic Ignika Forging

The Mask of Life is not a mask. It is a power equivalent to time and creativity, wearing a face. When the Great Beings finished building the Great Spirit Robot, they forged three KanohiKanohiMasks that grant powers and sustain life, they're the most vital artifact in the Matoran Universe. they could not reliably control: the Vahi (Mask of Time), the Mask of CreationMask of Creation: the Legendary Kanohi of ArtakhaOne of the three most powerful Kanohi in the Matoran Universe, the Mask of Creation let its wearer envision and build any object from raw materials. Frequently asked questions

What is the Mask of Life in Bionicle?
The Mask of Life, or Kanohi Ignika, is one of three Legendary Kanohi forged by the Great Beings as a failsafe to recharge Mata Nui's life force if the Great Spirit ever ran out of it. It exists on the same power tier as the Vahi and the Mask of Creation, corresponding to the three fundamental forces of the Matoran Universe.
Why does the Mask of Life curse those who touch it?
The mask curses everyone who touches it as a form of self-defense. When a curious Great Being first opened its box, the mask granted him uncontrollable power over life that broke him, after which it was buried under Mount Valmai with multiple guardians, a measure of how dangerous the Great Beings considered their own creation.
Who wore the Mask of Life and died?
Counted by true biological wearers who paid the Ignika's cost, only two beings have worn it. A male member of Toa Jovan's team wore it during the Great Disruption to heal Mata Nui and died from it, and Toa Matoro later wore it at the Universe Core and sacrificed himself to resurrect Mata Nui.
What is Toa Ignika?
Toa Ignika was the body the Mask of Life grew for itself from the organic matter of the Swamp of Secrets in Karda Nui, introducing itself as a Toa. It had the personality of a sheltered child, called itself 'he' in honor of Matoro, and was courageous to the point of recklessness while being the most powerful being in any room it entered.
What happened to the Mask of Life at the end of Bionicle?
After Teridax banished Mata Nui's spirit into the Ignika, the mask crash-landed on Bara Magna and built a body for him. In Journey's End, Mata Nui used the Ignika one last time to turn the reformed Spherus Magna into a paradise, after which the mask fell dormant with his spirit inside it, and its later fate was never canonically confirmed.
