Origins and founding#
The Order of Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna. was created to replace the Hand of ArtakhaArtakhaArtakha was the master craftsman of the Matoran Universe, ruler of a hidden island, and the forger of the Toa Mata, the Avohkii, and the Kraahkan., the earlier enforcement body that had served the Great Spirit in the formative period of the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control.. The Hand had been dissolved after its existence became too widely known, and its functions were absorbed into a successor organization built from the outset around concealment. HelryxHelryxHelryx was the first Toa created by the Great Beings, founder of the Order of Mata Nui, and commander of its covert war against the Brotherhood of Makuta., the first ToaThe Toa: Heroes of the Matoran UniverseThe Toa were biomechanical guardians sworn to protect the Matoran, bound by a strict code and defined by sacrifice across every age of the universe. ever created and a senior member of the Hand, founded the Order and led it for the entirety of its operational history.
The founding principle of the Order was simple. The Hand had failed because the universe had learned of it. The Order would not be allowed to fail in the same way. From its first day, the organization operated under the rule that no one outside its membership would know it existed. Toa teams operating in defence of the Great Spirit were not informed. The Order's existence remained a secret kept inside its own walls for tens of thousands of years.
The remit of the Order was the work that fell outside the reach of every other body in the universe. The Order existed to handle that gap, and it did so without the limitations imposed on either of its more visible counterparts.
Daxia and the command structure#
The Order's headquarters was a fortress on the island of DaxiaDaxiaDaxia is a location situated east of the Southern Continent, affiliated with the Order of Mata Nui and home to the Shallows Cat., an island whose existence and location were as carefully concealed as the organization it housed.
