Destral Fortress

Destral Fortress was the headquarters of the Brotherhood of MakutaMakuta (Species)Shadowy Antidermis beings and the Brotherhood's elite, Makuta commanded darkness and shaped the Matoran Universe's fate., covering most of the island of DestralDestralThe headquarters island of the Brotherhood of Makuta, which could teleport from place to place, until the Order of Mata Nui stormed it in the Destiny War.. It held workshops, laboratories with large stocks of energised protodermis, armouries, prison cells, interrogation chambers, living quarters and a library of forbidden knowledge. (BIONICLE: World)

Function#

The fortress was built while Miserix led the Brotherhood, and at first every Makuta was based there. In those days their only job was creating Rahi. (The Mutran Chronicles)

Later the Makuta spread out to rule their own regions, and Teridax in particular spent most of his time away from Destral, but the island stayed the place where the Brotherhood met and kept its secrets. (The Mutran Chronicles)

Its defences were never just walls. Destral was filled with hidden weapons and traps and guarded by Rahkshi and Visorak. (BIONICLE: World)

The Toa HagahToa HagahElite Toa teams appointed by the Brotherhood of Makuta to serve as personal guardians, later rebelling against their creators. still got in. Teridax's own Toa guard invaded the fortress and escaped with the AvohkiiAvohkiiThe Avohkii is the Mask of Light, a golden mask that granted its wearer the power of Light and the ability to spread understanding. Layout#

The Convocation Chamber was where all the Makuta assembled when a Convocation was called. Any Makuta could demand one, but normally only the Brotherhood's leader did. (The Mutran Chronicles)

It was in that chamber that Teridax laid out his Plan to strike at the Great Spirit, fought Miserix, and claimed the leadership through the will of the Convocation. Afterwards, the masks of the Makuta who had sided with Miserix were nailed to the chamber wall as a warning. (The Mutran Chronicles)

Deep in a sub-basement lay Tridax's vault, a chamber with walls forty feet high lined with close to a hundred stasis tubes. Each held a Takanuva from another reality, some already turned black-armoured, waiting to be drained by shadow leeches into an army of Shadow Toa. The Nynrah ghosts#

In Mutran's account, the Nynrah ghosts were brought to Destral after the Makuta became beings of pure energy, to add extra layers of protosteel to their armour. The fortress was a workshop as much as a base. (The Mutran Chronicles)

Under Tridax#

By the Destiny War, Tridax was the Makuta in charge of Destral. His orders were to keep the island where it was unless attacked, and if Toa or Dark Hunters posed a serious threat, to teleport it off the shores of Metru Nui and seize the city. (Destiny War)

He interrogated Vezon there, hanging him from the ceiling by his ankles after Vezon's story about sabotaged teleportation gear turned out to be false. (Destiny War)

The final destruction#

The Order of Mata NuiThe Order of Mata NuiThe covert organization founded by Helryx to serve the Great Spirit directly, operating in concealment from a fortress on Daxia and waging the open war against the Brotherhood of Makuta that decided the fate of the universe. attacked while Vezon was still dangling. The walls shook, a blast tore a hole in the chamber, and Tridax went to carry out his orders, with Vezon following unseen. (Destiny War)

In the vault, Tridax caught Vezon and was about to release the Shadow Takanuva he had already made when a virus began dissolving his armour. Tobduk and the Matoran MazekaMazekaA Ko-Matoran spy for the Order of Mata Nui obsessed with becoming the perfect warrior. stepped out of the shadows. (Destiny War)

Tobduk incinerated Tridax's antidermis with his staff while the fortress shook and crumbled under the Order's assault. He and Mazeka left the captive Toa behind as casualties of war, and as the ceiling cracked, Vezon was left alone among the stasis tubes. (Brothers In Arms)

Legacy#

After Teridax took over the universe, Takanuva and PohatuPohatuPohatu was the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva of Stone, guardian of Po-Wahi, whose speed and steady humour anchored the team through every era of the Matoran Universe. went to Destral and found precious little left, with shattered Makuta armour everywhere. Takanuva couldn't tell how much was the Order's work and how much Teridax's. He searched the ruins for the device that had teleported the island and found it, badly damaged. (Takanuva's Blog)
