Tridax was a member of the Brotherhood of Makuta whose private project, conducted in secret beneath the fortress at Destral for centuries, was among the most cynical undertakings any individual Makuta ever attempted. While Teridax was assembling his cosmic-scale conspiracy and Antroz and Vamprah were stripping the light from Av-Matoran villages in Karda Nui, Tridax was at home using a stolen Kanohi Olmak to traverse alternate realities and abduct their Takanuvas. He stored them in stasis tubes in a sub-basement and fed them Shadow Leeches one at a time. His goal was an army of Toa of Shadow wearing the face of the universe's most famous hero, and his personal goal beneath that goal was to be the Makuta strong enough, after Teridax's victory, to seize the throne next. His body was molded by Mata Nui out of the Makuta Pool alongside every other member of his species, and he was assigned, as they all were, to the founding work of the Brotherhood of Makuta. His duties were to construct Rahi, to maintain the bio-mechanical fauna that would coexist with Matoran civilisation, and to keep order in the region he was given. Roughly 75,000 to 70,000 years before the Destiny War he was assigned a Toa Hagah team, a routine note in the careers of senior Brotherhood members that pairs each ranking Makuta with a Toa security detail for threats unworthy of personal attention. His team was either corrupted or killed when Teridax's own Hagah unit rebelled, discovered the Brotherhood's corruption, and fled with the Kanohi Avohkii. Whatever Tridax's team had been, none of them survived the purge that followed.

That episode places Tridax in the era he came of age within. He was present at Destral for the workshop years recorded in Mutran's Chronicles, when Chirox and Spiriah hunched over slabs arguing about leg counts. He lived through the first metamorphosis, when the Makuta species expelled the last of the Light within themselves to become beings of pure Shadow. He lived through the second, when their armor was rebuilt by the Nynrah Ghosts to contain a gaseous essence rather than a body of flesh and protosteel. By the time Teridax deposed Miserix at the Convocation, Tridax had been a hundred-thousand-year veteran of an organisation that had long since ceased to be what Mata Nui had placed it on Destral to be.

He was not a true believer in The Plan in the way Antroz was. He was a Makuta with his own succession plan already in motion, and that distinction reframes everything later uncovered about the basement.

Co-inventing the Shadow Leech#

The technical contribution that attached Tridax's name to a weapon was the Shadow Leech project. Sometime in the last thousand years of Matoran Universe history, Tridax worked with Chirox and Mutran in Mutran's laboratory to engineer a mutated form of Kraata. The resulting creature could feed on the elemental and moral light of a target and convert that target into a being of Shadow. A Matoran drained by one lost their original element and gained Shadow in its place. A Toa drained by one became a Toa of Shadow. The same trio designed the delivery system, a hollow biomechanical container that held up to four leeches at a time and could be carried inside the chest of any Makuta who shape-shifted to accommodate it. That weapon was named the Tridax Pod because the project had been his idea first.

Tridax's place in the late Brotherhood hierarchy was distinct. He was not Mutran, the inventor whose entire identity rested on creation. He was the Makuta who brought a specific weapon concept to Mutran and Chirox, ran the program alongside them, and walked away with the patent. The Tridax Pod was the weapon that allowed the Karda Nui invasion force to convert the Av-Matoran Sky Villages in roughly a week. Vamprah launched one at the survivor village led by Tanma, and the leeches died against the shelter doors. Tahu absorbed one in the Swamp of Secrets with his Hau Nuva shield. The pod appeared throughout the late history of the universe, and every appearance carried Tridax's name.

What Tridax himself was doing with the technology, while every other Makuta was deploying it in the field, is the part of his record that turns him from a footnote into something far darker.

The basement no one was meant to see#

Soon after the Shadow Leech project came online, Tridax took possession of a Kanohi Olmak, the Mask of Dimensional Gates. The Olmak was among the rarest masks in the Matoran Universe. Brutaka wore one. Botar used one to teleport prisoners to the Pit. The mask opened portals across the universe and into alternate realities of it, the kind of capability ordinarily guarded with great care. By the late period of the Matoran Universe the mask had been stolen twice, once by the Order of Mata Nui and once by the Brotherhood, and somewhere in that chain it came into Tridax's possession.

Tridax's idea was a closed loop, and the cynicism of it set him apart from the Brotherhood's other planners. He recognised that the Olmak could carry him to dozens of alternate realities, each with its own version of the universe, each with its own Takanuva. The Toa of Light. The hero who, in the prime reality, had defeated Teridax on the steps of the Mangaia using the same Avohkii the Brotherhood had spent millennia trying to keep buried. The count of realities he eventually visited approached one hundred. He went, one at a time, and he abducted them.

He brought each Takanuva back to a sub-basement of the Destral Fortress and placed him in a Stasis Tube. The Brotherhood's flagship fortress had a Convocation Chamber where Tridax voted on doctrine, and one floor below it a private collection of Toa of Light sealed in glass. Simply another room.

The leeches were doing the work. One Tridax Pod at a time, the captured Takanuvas were drained of their elemental light and converted into Toa of Shadow. The process was slow and the project was long. Tridax did not finish all of his captives. Some were converted and ready to deploy. Some were still in transition. Some remained in their tubes, untouched, when the fortress fell.

His own justification, recorded across the relevant sources, placed him precisely within the spectrum of Makuta ambition. He believed that the project would make him the most powerful member of the Makuta after Teridax completed The Plan. He was building his post-victory army. He was not trying to overthrow Teridax in the manner of Icarax. He was not abandoning the project in the manner of Krika. He was loyal to The Plan in the strictest tactical sense, and that loyalty was a runway. Tridax intended to be the Makuta holding the strongest hand on the morning after Teridax became a god. An army of dimension-stolen Toa of Light, corrupted into Shadow, all wearing variants of the universe's most recognisable hero's face, all loyal to him personally, was the hand he was building.

He was, in a structural sense, worse than half the Brotherhood. Icarax wanted the throne and said so. Krika had a conscience and acted on it. Tridax was loyal until the moment loyalty ceased to pay, and the entire time he was loyal, he ran a covert program against his own faction's eventual interests. The Brotherhood's basement was a betrayal vault.

Holding the fortress while the others went to war#

When the entrance to Karda Nui was at last located and the eight-Makuta invasion force was mustered for the universe-core operation, Tridax remained behind. The Brotherhood placed him in command of Destral. His orders, as he later recited them to himself, were clean and limited: maintain Destral in its current location unless attacked, and in the event of a serious threat from Toa or Dark Hunters, teleport the island off the shores of Metru Nui and seize that city. Garrison duty for a teleporting fortress, with a small army of Rahkshi at his disposal, and the option to escalate to a full invasion of Metru Nui if matters turned dire.

It was an underrated post. The teleportation technology was the Brotherhood's strategic ace, and the fortress contained the Convocation Chamber, the laboratories, Mutran's old workbench, and Tridax's private collection. The Brotherhood trusted him with all of it. They almost certainly did not know about the basement.

Shortly after the invasion force departed, Vezon, the deranged red-armored clone of Vakama who had been turned over to the Order of Mata Nui and recently released for a sabotage operation, was captured by Rahkshi on the shores of Destral and brought in for interrogation. Tridax, who introduced himself with a laugh, had Vezon strung up from the ceiling by his ankles. The questioning that followed was the only sustained dialogue Tridax ever conducted that survived in record. He had already done his diligence. "I have checked our teleportation technology," he told Vezon. "There is no sign of sabotage. You are a liar." Vezon, being Vezon, continued to needle him. Tridax picked up a wickedly sharp blade. "You have no powers," he said. "You have no mind. You are about to have no head." That was the entire warning Tridax issued. He would have killed Vezon within the next thirty seconds had the Order of Mata Nui not begun their bombardment of the fortress in the same moment.

The bombardment was the opening salvo of the Order Brotherhood War, the operation Helryx had spent the preceding months preparing for, the offensive the Order had been positioning toward since they had moved on Xia and Nynrah to disrupt Brotherhood supply lines. Destral shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. A second blast tore a hole in the wall and threw mangled Rahkshi into the chamber. The anchors on Vezon's chains came loose, and he dropped to the floor. Tridax paid no attention. His orders were clear. He stalked off toward the teleportation chamber to carry them out. Vezon, unnoticed, followed.

What happened next is the part where the rest of the Brotherhood would have benefited from oversight.

The detour that killed him#

Tridax did not go to the teleportation chamber. He went down. The corridors he took led to the sub-basement where his Shadow Takanuva were stored, and his own actions made plain that this was a violation of his orders. The fortress was under attack. Protocol was to teleport. He had a competing project he could not bring himself to abandon, and so he detoured to his collection instead.

His intention, by his own monologue, was to deploy the converted Toa of Shadow against the Order intruders. He turned on Vezon, who had been creeping along behind him the entire way, and pinned him to the wall with a blast of Shadow. He began to explain the plan. He would release the transformed Takanuva on the attackers and use the same operation to finish converting the rest. He did not have time to complete the monologue.

Two members of the Order of Mata Nui had reached him. Mazeka, the Ba-Matoran the Order had recruited as an assassin candidate, and Tobduk, the Order's senior killer, the operative Helryx trusted with the targets that mattered most. They carried a weapon designed precisely for this kind of kill. The Order had developed a virus that consumed protosteel armor, the same substance Tridax's body was sheathed in, and they applied it to him mid-sentence. The disintegration began at his hands.

Tridax noticed. He attempted to use his mental powers in some unspecified way. Tobduk then finished him with a staff capable of incinerating Antidermis essence. The virus took his armor. The staff took his soul.

A hundred-thousand-year-old Makuta died in disregard of his explicit orders, in a private corridor of his own fortress, mid-sentence, by a kill team that had been hunting Brotherhood leadership since the war began and that arrived faster than he could deploy the secret army he had spent a millennium building. The Brotherhood lost their teleporting flagship in the same operation. Tobduk walked back out, found Mazeka, and left the Olmak alone on Destral, the mask Tridax had used to harvest a hundred realities lying unused on a floor.

What survived him#

The Shadow Takanuva did not all die with him. Some perished when Destral fell. Others remained in their stasis tubes when the fortress collapsed, and they reappear in the historical record during Reign of Shadows. Teridax personally teleported three of the surviving Shadow Takanuva to attack Mazeka and the alternate-universe version of Teridax who had been exiled into the prime reality. The trio of Shadow Toa attacked. They lost. But they existed, years after Tridax died, because the project he ran in the basement outlived him.

The Olmak drifted into the most baroque outcome of any of these artefacts. Vezon, the same Vezon Tridax had been about to behead, eventually came into possession of it after the dust settled, used it to travel to an island in the southern reaches of the Matoran Universe, was exposed to Energized Protodermis there, and ended up with the Olmak fused permanently to his face. Tridax's secret weapon became a Skakdi accessory. The Makuta who had interrogated Vezon at swordpoint had his mask absorbed into Vezon's skull.

Tridax stands in the historical record as the test case for how completely the Brotherhood had ceased to function as an organisation. The original Brotherhood had assignments, a regional structure, a chain of command running from Miserix downward. By the time of the Karda Nui invasion the chain had collapsed into a single thread, running from Teridax's telepathic orders to whichever Makuta happened to be receiving them, and the rest was every Makuta running his own private operation. Icarax was plotting his coup. Krika was hiding Miserix on Artidax. Mutran was inventing new horrors out of swamp mud because invention was what he loved. Tridax was abducting Takanuvas. None of these projects had Brotherhood sign-off. None of them were coordinated. The organisation that had begun as a workshop full of craftsmen complaining about teeth had ended as a confederation of immortal beings each running his own scheme in the same building.

Tridax's basement is the cleanest illustration of that decay. The Brotherhood placed him in command of their most strategic asset and never thought to inspect what he was building one floor below. The Order found him by following bombardment damage and intuition. He died because he could not separate his secret project from his explicit orders even with the fortress collapsing around him, and the Brotherhood lost Destral, the Olmak, Tridax himself, and the basement of stolen Takanuva in a single afternoon.

The Shadow Takanuva in their tubes remain among the most memorable single images in the late history of the Matoran Universe. A sub-basement under a destroyed fortress on a teleporting island, full of Toa of Light drawn from realities most of the cast never visited, drained of their light by leeches in a project that ran for centuries and never finished. The Brotherhood of Makuta had rooms like that. They had a great many rooms like that.
