The Species#

The Makuta were a species of Antidermis entities created by Mata Nui from a single shared pool on the island of Destral. One hundred members were seeded simultaneously, each assigned to oversee a specific region of the Matoran Universe. Their responsibilities included the maintenance of order within their territories, the creation of Rahi to populate the world, and the enforcement of the Great Spirit's will on the local populations.

Notable members of the species included Miserix, the founding leader of the Brotherhood; Teridax, the Makuta of Metru Nui and eventual successor to Miserix; Mutran, the Brotherhood's lead biologist and engineer of the Visorak; Spiriah, the disgraced Makuta whose experiments on the Skakdi of Zakaz led to his exile; Icarax, the rival who refused to accept Teridax's leadership and was eventually destroyed; Tridax, inventor of the Tridax Pod used to deliver Shadow Matoran; and the six Phantoka and Mistika Makuta active during the Karda Nui campaign: Antroz, Chirox, Vamprah, Krika, Gorast, and Bitil.

The Individual#

In most narrative contexts, particularly those involving the Toa Mata and the Mata Nui island, the name "Makuta" refers to the specific individual Teridax. Teridax was the Makuta assigned to Metru Nui. He overthrew Miserix at the Convocation to assume leadership of the Brotherhood of Makuta, orchestrated the Great Cataclysm that placed the Great Spirit into a coma, and ultimately succeeded in taking control of the Great Spirit's body and ruling the Matoran Universe from within it.

Teridax was the Makuta defeated by the Toa Mata beneath the island of Mata Nui, the entity whose Rahkshi were called his sons, and the antagonist confronted by Takanuva at the doorway to Metru Nui. When narrative sources from the era of the Great Cataclysm through the Reign of Shadows refer to "the Makuta" in singular form without further qualification, the referent is almost always Teridax.

The Title#

"Makuta" functioned as a title within the Brotherhood of Makuta. Every member of the Brotherhood held dominion over a specific region of the Matoran Universe, and within that region was referred to as the Makuta, in the manner that an admiral is the admiral of a particular fleet.

By assignment, Teridax was the Makuta of Metru Nui. Krika was the Makuta of the southern regions before his reassignment to the Karda Nui conflict. Spiriah was the Makuta of Zakaz until his exile. Icarax held oversight of Karzahni before his rebellion. Each region had one Makuta, and to the local Matoran population that individual was simply "the Makuta," distinct from all others by virtue of jurisdiction.

The Matoran of Metru Nui referred to "the Makuta" without further specification because, within their city, only one Makuta governed. The Matoran of the island of Mata Nui used the term the same way and never encountered any other member of the species. The title was a true description; it simply was not the only such description in the universe.
