Teridax was the Makuta assigned to Metru Nui. He overthrew Miserix at the Convocation to assume leadership of the Brotherhood of Makuta, orchestrated the Great Cataclysm that placed the Great Spirit into a coma, and ultimately succeeded in taking control of the Great Spirit's body and ruling the Matoran Universe from within it.

Teridax was the Makuta defeated by the Toa Mata beneath the island of Mata Nui, the entity whose Rahkshi were called his sons, and the antagonist confronted by Takanuva at the doorway to Metru Nui. When narrative sources from the era of the Great Cataclysm through the Reign of Shadows refer to "the Makuta" in singular form without further qualification, the referent is almost always Teridax.

The Matoran of Metru Nui referred to "the Makuta" without further specification because, within their city, only one Makuta governed.
