Destral

Destral was the island headquarters of the Brotherhood of MakutaThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to build Rahi and keep order in his universe, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.. The Brotherhood chose it for its large reserves of energised protodermis, and an enormous fortress of stone and metal came to cover most of it. Unlike any ordinary island, it could teleport from place to place. (BIONICLE: World)

Geography and structure#

The fortress covered most of the island. Inside were workshops, laboratories, armouries, prison cells, interrogation chambers, living quarters for the Makuta and a library of forbidden knowledge, with energised protodermis on hand for experiments. Destral didn't seem to bar visitors, but it was full of hidden weapons and traps, and Rahkshi and Visorak guarded it. (BIONICLE: World)

The teleportation system#

The Brotherhood could move the whole island from place to place. When it teleported, Destral appeared to pass through a massive dimensional gate. (BIONICLE: World)

During the Karda Nui campaign, when the Makuta there needed Icarax, the Matoran Vican flew to Destral, and a tablet of transit got him past the Rahkshi and Visorak guarding it. (BIONICLE Legends 9: Shadows in the Sky)

In the Destiny War, Makuta TridaxTridaxMost Makuta wanted the Plan to succeed. Tridax wanted what came after, and he was building a private army of stolen Toa of Light in a Destral basement to make sure he got it., left in charge, had standing orders: keep Destral where it was unless attacked, and in the face of a serious threat from Toa or Dark Hunters, teleport it off the shores of Metru Nui and seize the city. The Brotherhood Convocation#

When a Convocation was called, every Makuta had to assemble on Destral. Any Makuta could demand one, but normally only the leader did. (The Mutran Chronicles)

Teridax broke that custom. He demanded a Convocation without Miserix's permission and laid out his Plan to strike at the Great Spirit. Miserix blasted him through the wall, the two fought, and Teridax left it to the assembled Makuta to choose who they would follow. Almost all chose him, and he claimed the leadership through the will of the Convocation. (The Mutran Chronicles)

Production and experimentation#

In the Brotherhood's early days, all the Makuta were based on Destral and their only job was making Rahi. Mutran recalls bending over a slab with Chirox, trying to make something useful of one of Spiriah's experiments. (The Mutran Chronicles)

By the Destiny War, Tridax had a darker project in a sub-basement. He and Mutran had developed shadow leeches, and using a Kanohi Olmak, Tridax was collecting the Takanuva of other realities, close to a hundred of them in stasis, to turn into an army of Shadow Toa. (Destiny War)

The final destruction#

The Order of Mata Nui attacked Destral while Tridax was interrogating Vezon, whom the Order had sent in. As the walls shook, Tridax headed for his vault, and there a virus began to dissolve his armour as Tobduk and the Matoran Mazeka appeared. (Destiny War)

Tobduk incinerated Tridax's antidermis with his staff while the fortress crumbled around them. He and Mazeka left the captive Toa behind, and Vezon stayed in the collapsing chamber. (Brothers In Arms)

The post-war ruin#

After Teridax seized the universe, Takanuva and PohatuPohatuPohatu was the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva of Stone, guardian of Po-Wahi, whose speed and steady humour anchored the team through every era of the Matoran Universe. went to Destral. Nothing was left alive, and shattered Makuta armour lay everywhere. Takanuva couldn't tell how much damage was the Order's and how much was Teridax's, though it looked to him like the new ruler had wiped out his competition. (Takanuva's Blog)

While Pohatu searched for weapons, Takanuva looked for the device that had teleported the island, hoping to use it to reach the other dimensions he had visited and find help. He found it, badly damaged, and sent for NuparuNuparuAn Onu-Matoran engineer from Metru Nui who built the Boxor and rose to become a Toa of Earth despite no warrior destiny.. (Takanuva's Blog)
