Blade Burrowers

The tunneling Rahi engineered by Makuta Mutran for the Barraki Kalmah, gifted with deliberately shortened lifespans, and later discovered to have outlived their expiration date while carving an unreadable map beneath their warlord's ruined fortress.

Origin and the Brotherhood tribute#

Its forelimbs ended in powerful claws shaped for cutting through stone, packed earth, and the structural protodermis layers of the underground. The species hunted not by sight but by scent. Its eyesight was poor enough that visual recognition of prey at distance was unreliable, and the recorded behavioural pattern was one of scent-tracking through tunnel networks toward a moving target. The compensation was thorough: a Blade BurrowerBlade Burrower: The Tunnelling Rahi of Metru NuiBlade Burrowers were powerful, near-blind Rahi that dug endless tunnels in a fixed pattern, a behavior the Great Beings engineered into them and that no one who studied the creatures was ever able to fully explain. in a tunnel of its own making could orient on a quarry the VahkiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts. could not follow.

The species' most distinctive physical feature was its long, club-shaped tail. When a Burrower surfaced and was threatened or cornered, it swung the tail in wide horizontal arcs, knocking aside attackers and pushing surrounding creatures into panic flight. The combination of the tail and the species' size made a single agitated Burrower a serious hazard to anything in the immediate area. VahkiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts. protocol on Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive. called for rapid containment of any surfaced Burrower into a holding container, on the understanding that the secondary damage from the swung tail would otherwise compound the original disturbance.

The defining behaviour was the digging. Individually, a Blade Burrower tunnelled at need, foraging and pursuing prey through whatever subsurface the local terrain offered. When the species gathered in sufficient numbers, the behaviour changed. The compulsion became geometric. The Burrowers no longer tunnelled at random but began carving a repeating pattern across the volume of stone available to them, working continually and without apparent purpose. Two long curved tunnels ran roughly north and south, with smaller subsidiary tunnels arranged between them, and the same configuration was repeated through every accessible region.

The compulsion was first identified after the fall of the League of Six KingdomsLeague of Six KingdomsThe League of Six Kingdoms was an alliance composed of various species, with ties to Xia and many other islands. The location was, by MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.'s own assessment, unpleasant: the northwestern reaches of the League's former territory smelled of rotting RahiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts., and a substantial fraction of that scent traced to MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.'s own short-lived deliveries from earlier campaigns. The fortress had been sacked by KalmahKalmahA red-and-black Barraki warlord of the League of Six Kingdoms, imprisoned in the Pit and mutated into permanent aquatic form.'s own remnant army before BrotherhoodThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. forces arrived. Nothing of strategic value was left intact.

MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. cleared a space in the rubble to sit and noticed a carving on a remaining piece of stone. The carving was a record of what KalmahKalmahA red-and-black Barraki warlord of the League of Six Kingdoms, imprisoned in the Pit and mutated into permanent aquatic form. had discovered about the Blade Burrowers in his service. A population of the creatures had outlived the expiration MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. had built into them, and KalmahKalmahA red-and-black Barraki warlord of the League of Six Kingdoms, imprisoned in the Pit and mutated into permanent aquatic form. had spent his last period of authority observing the network of tunnels they were producing beneath the fortress. The shape was not random. The tunnels formed a deliberate, repeating pattern, and KalmahKalmahA red-and-black Barraki warlord of the League of Six Kingdoms, imprisoned in the Pit and mutated into permanent aquatic form. had concluded that the Blade Burrowers were carving a map. He had not deciphered what the map represented before the war ended.

MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. inherited the question. He could not match the carved geometry to any landmass on any chart available to the BrotherhoodThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.. He later went to the length of capturing a Toa wearing a Kanohi RauKanohi RauThe Kanohi Rau allowed its wearer to comprehend foreign written and spoken languages, and was most associated with Turaga Nokama., the Mask of Translation, and forcing the prisoner to address the Burrowers directly. The communication failed. The Burrowers had no understanding of the pattern themselves, only the compulsion to keep cutting it. The map was real, the geometry was deliberate, and the species' purpose in producing it remained, by MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.'s own admission, a mystery that haunted him long afterward.

The pattern was later identified independently of MutranThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.'s investigation. The shape the Blade Burrowers cut into stone was the symbol of the Three VirtuesThe Three VirtuesThe Three Virtues were the foundational principles given by Mata Nui to the Matoran, shaping social order, ritual, and the cosmology of Spherus Magna., the device representing Unity, Duty, and Destiny that recurred throughout MatoranMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control. culture and across the Great Spirit Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna.'s body. Frequently asked questions

What were Blade Burrowers?
Blade Burrowers were powerful, reclusive Rahi engineered by Makuta Mutran and supplied to the Barraki warlord Kalmah during the era of the League of Six Kingdoms. They were heavily clawed tunnelling creatures with long club-shaped tails, very poor eyesight, and a compulsion to dig in a recurring pattern when they gathered in sufficient numbers.
Why did Mutran give the Blade Burrowers a short lifespan?
Kalmah had never shown the deference that a Makuta considered his due, so Mutran built every Rahi consignment sent to him to be deliberately short-lived. The Blade Burrowers were designed with an expiration date of no more than several days, giving Mutran a quiet measure of revenge for what he regarded as repeated insults.
How did Blade Burrowers hunt despite their poor eyesight?
The species hunted by scent rather than sight. A Blade Burrower in a tunnel of its own making could scent-track and orient on a moving target through its tunnel networks, following quarry that even the Vahki could not.
What was the carved map at Kalmah's fortress?
A surviving population of Blade Burrowers had outlived their built-in expiration and carved a vast repeating pattern of tunnels beneath the fortress, two long curved tunnels running north and south with smaller ones between them. Kalmah concluded it was a map but never deciphered it, and Mutran could not match the geometry to any chart. The pattern was later identified as the symbol of the Three Virtues.
What happened to the Blade Burrowers after the Battle of Bara Magna?
The species survived the Great Cataclysm and the Visorak occupation of Metru Nui, and after the Battle of Bara Magna and the reformation of Spherus Magna it was among those that exited the body of the Great Spirit and relocated to the restored planet. No detailed records of the Spherus Magna population survive.
