The Pit and the Mutagen#
The Barraki remained imprisoned in the Pit under HydraxonHydraxonThe jailer of the Pit was killed once, then resurrected as the Matoran Dekar by the Mask of Life.'s supervision for approximately 79,000 years. One thousand and one years before the events at Mahri NuiMahri NuiA matoran settlement that sank, survived, and was ultimately crushed beneath Voya Nui, leaving behind one of Bionicle's most poignant lost civilizations., the Great Cataclysm shattered the Pit's containment structure, allowing its prisoners to escape into the surrounding waters. The Barraki were transformed into water-breathing sea creatures that could no longer survive on land. The mutation defined their subsequent existence: they escaped the Pit's walls but could not escape the surrounding ocean. Within that larger boundary, they expanded their range, established new territories on the seafloor, and effectively converted the surrounding region into an extended prison.

Frequently asked questions
- Who were the Barraki?
- The Barraki were six warlords, Pridak, Kalmah, Mantax, Carapar, Takadox, and Ehlek, who founded the League of Six Kingdoms and ruled most of the Matoran Universe for several thousand years. Originally appointed by Mata Nui to keep the peace, they turned on the Great Spirit and attempted to seize power for themselves.
- How were the Barraki defeated and imprisoned?
- By 80,000 years before the Great Cataclysm, the League had moved to seize Metru Nui and overthrow Mata Nui. During the final preparations, a combined Brotherhood force of Rahi, Rahkshi, and Exo-Toa under Teridax, allied with the Toa, ambushed and captured all six Barraki. Before Teridax could have them executed, the Order of Mata Nui agent Botar teleported all six into the Pit.
- Why did the Barraki become sea creatures?
- The Great Cataclysm shattered the Pit's containment structure, and its waters contained the Mutagen, a substance that rewrote the biology of any prisoner exposed to it. The Barraki were transformed into water-breathing sea creatures that could no longer survive on land.
- Why did the Barraki hunt the Mask of Life?
- When the Kanohi Ignika arrived in Pit waters, the warlords coordinated their forces to retrieve it, believing the mask could restore them to air-breathing forms and let them return to land. The campaign ended when the Toa Mahri used the Ignika to revive Mata Nui instead, and the six warlords turned on one another in a fit of rage.
- What happened to the Barraki after Teridax's reign?
- Following the Battle of Bara Magna and the collapse of the Great Spirit Robot, the surviving Barraki evacuated onto Spherus Magna, where they were cured of the Pit's Mutagen and their original biology was restored. The League of Six Kingdoms did not reform, and the survivors entered the post-war population as private survivors rather than as a political bloc.
