Toa Mahri: The Toa Who Saved the Universe

The Toa Mahri were the water breathing form of the sixth Toa team, transformed by the Mask of Life on the way down to the drowned city of Mahri Nui. They fought the Barraki for the mask and recovered it at the cost of one of their own.

The transformation on the Cord#

During that descent a great burst of light slammed into the team, a call for help sent out by the Mask of Life itself. The energy transformed their armor and allowed them to breathe underwater, fitting them with what looked like air hoses but were in fact gills. The lightning charge that had defined the Inika was gone in the same moment, along with the glowing faces, the energized weapons, and the living masks. Their powers returned to ordinary Toa levels. The one lasting variation was that they could now breathe both water and air. Soon after the change they defeated a giant venom eel that had been damaging the CordThe CordThe stone Cord linking Voya Nui to the sunken peninsula of Mahri Nui, the tunnel the Toa Mahri descended, and the lifeline severed to revive Mata Nui., the first action they took in the new form.

The city was under siege. The deception backfired when the Matoran of Mahri Nui saw it and concluded the Toa were as villainous as the Barraki, which forced MatoroMatoroA quiet Ko-Matoran translator who became a Toa Inika and then a Toa Mahri, Matoro gave his life with the Mask of Life to restore Mata Nui. to flee the city.

The five eventually escaped their captors and made their way back, picking up Cordak Blasters along the way. The Matoran were not pleased to see them, but the Toa won them over, and the two groups agreed to work together against the Barraki. When the team reunited and proved their willingness to fight for the city, the Matoran honored the six strangers with the title Toa Mahri.

Frequently asked questions

Who were the Toa Mahri?
The Toa Mahri were the water breathing form of the sixth Toa team, the same six warriors who had been the Toa Inika. They were Jaller, Hahli, Nuparu, Kongu, Matoro, and Hewkii, transformed by the Mask of Life on the way down to the undersea city of Mahri Nui.
How did the Toa Inika become the Toa Mahri?
As the team descended the Cord toward Mahri Nui, the Mask of Life sent out a burst of energy that struck them, rebuilt their armor with gills, and stripped away the lightning charge of the Inika form. The change let them breathe water, and the Matoran of Mahri Nui later honored them with the name Toa Mahri.
Who did the Toa Mahri fight?
They fought the Barraki, six warlords imprisoned in the ocean depths who were besieging Mahri Nui and contending for the Mask of Life. The team turned the Barraki's alliances against each other, provoking open war among their armies.
How did Matoro die?
Matoro carried the Mask of Life to the chamber that fed the Great Spirit and put it on, knowing it would kill him. His body was turned to raw energy that revived the dying Mata Nui, and as his final wish he sent the rest of the team safely home to Metru Nui.
What happened to the Toa Mahri after they saved Mata Nui?
The five survivors were teleported to Metru Nui by Matoro's dying wish, where Turaga Vakama told them what their teammate had done. They kept the water breathing form and the name Toa Mahri afterward, with Jaller as leader and Hewkii as deputy.
