Vezon
The Accident That Bionicle Kept Using
He started as a weapon misfire and a throwaway joke, and the canon spent four years quietly turning him into its most useful expendable asset.

That being got VezokVezokThe Beast was a Piraka thief split in two by the Spear of Fusion, then imprisoned by the Order of Mata Nui.'s intelligence and almost nothing else, including, apparently, none of his stability. He should have been a one-issue gag. Instead the writers kept him, and over the next four years of story he becomes the most reliably useful disposable character the franchise has. Every faction that picks him up does so for the same reason. Nobody knows what he is capable of, including Vezon, and you can spend a being like that without spending anything you value.
Born from a backfired weapon#

The creation is worth getting exact, because everything about Vezon follows from how careless it was. Here is where Vezon's life stops being his own, which is a pattern that never really breaks.
The Mask of Life let him reach it, and then it cursed him. That is the canon's word. The IgnikaThe Mask of Life (Kanohi Ignika), explainedA failsafe forged by the Great Beings to recharge a god. Why the joke character is the saddest one#
Strip away the rambling and the comic timing and Vezon is the bleakest character study in G1, and I do not think the writers fully intended that. They built him as a gag and the gag kept accruing meaning.
Every power Vezon ever holds belongs to something else. The IgnikaThe Mask of Life (Kanohi Ignika), explainedA failsafe forged by the Great Beings to recharge a god. Tridax wanted what came after, and he was building a private army of stolen Toa of Light in a Destral basement to make sure he got it.'s, and when it finally became his own it became a cage. He is, structurally, the part of another being that got discarded, and the entire canon treats him accordingly. The Order does not recruit him, it expends him. His teammates do not trust him, they tolerate him because his unpredictability is occasionally convenient. Tren KromTren KromThe first purely organic creation of the Great Beings, exiled to a stone island after surrendering the core of the Matoran Universe to Mata Nui.'s mind-shattering visions cannot find anything in Vezon left to break, which is presented as a punchline and is actually one of the saddest lines about him on the page.
The tell is what he says he wants. Read it twice. After the life this character had, that is not a small thing. It might be the only clean win he ever gets.
Frequently asked questions
- Who is Vezon?
- Vezon is a Skakdi created when the Spear of Fusion split the Piraka Vezok in two. He carried Vezok's intellectual capabilities but, by the canon, none of his stability.
- How was Vezon created?
- The Piraka Hakann fired the Spear of Fusion at Vezok with the weapon set to split rather than merge, and a second being came apart from him. Thok called the result a "vezon," the Matoran word for double, and the new being took it as a name.
- How did Vezon become the guardian of the Mask of Life?
- The Ignika let Vezon reach it and then cursed him, fusing itself to the back of his skull and fusing him to an enlarged Fenrakk spider as its guardian. As a side effect it gave him kinetic absorption, limited foresight, and the inability to die while the mask stayed on his head.
- How was Vezon separated from the Mask of Life?
- Kongu used his Suletu to pour the Ignika's thoughts into Vezon's mind, and Vezon learned the mask wanted Matoro instead. When he charged Matoro in a rage, Jaller froze him with a special Zamor from Axonn, and Matoro pulled the Mask of Life from Vezon's head.
- What happened to Vezon at the end of the story?
- After Energized Protodermis mutated him and fused him to the Olmak, Vezon became a living dimensional doorway, constantly tearing open portals and falling through them. He brokered a deal with the cursed Great Being and ended the story alive on Bota Magna, no longer fused to anything.
