Legends 6: City of the LostCity of the LostThe first appearance of Mahri Nui in the Quest for the Mask of Life, the airweed harvest that kept the underwater city alive, Defilak's submarine expedition into the Black Water, and the arrival of the Barraki on the doorstep of the Matoran settlement., Ehlek commanded his venom eels to attack the island's structures in search of the mask. A confrontation with a guardian creature spawned by the mask itself brought the Barraki's search to a critical juncture. Ehlek's famous quip about the problem they faced, a 300-foot-long venom eel guardian, captures his sardonic approach even in dire circumstances.
Despite their combined strength, the Barraki's assault failed. The MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. defenders, including the Toa Mahri, proved more resilient than anticipated. In Comic 7: Mask of Life, Mask of Doom, Ehlek declared that any force attempting to stand against them would be destroyed, yet the Mask of Life's own defenses turned the tables on his entire faction.
Later, in the Reign of ShadowsReign of ShadowsThe year Teridax ruled the Matoran Universe from inside Mata Nui's body, and the scattered resistance plots that ran against him until the Great Spirit returned from Bara Magna. serial, Ehlek regrouped with KalmahKalmahA red-and-black Barraki warlord of the League of Six Kingdoms, imprisoned in the Pit and mutated into permanent aquatic form. and MantaxMantaxMutated Barraki warlord of the Pit who uncovered Takadox's Brotherhood collaboration through a hidden Tablet of Transit. as they rebuilt their forces under a new arrangement. He returned to the sea to gather his own troops, positioning himself for the coming conflict against the Brotherhood of MakutaMakuta (Species)Shadowy Antidermis beings and the Brotherhood's elite, Makuta commanded darkness and shaped the Matoran Universe's fate.. This represented a shift from warlord to reluctant ally, fighting alongside factions that once opposed him.
