Mahri Nui, the Airweed Harvest, and the Submarine

The first appearance of Mahri Nui in the Quest for the Mask of Life, the airweed harvest that kept the underwater city alive, Defilak's submarine expedition into the Black Water, and the arrival of the Barraki on the doorstep of the Matoran settlement.

The settlement was enclosed in a permanent bubble of breathable air, and the bubble was the only thing keeping the MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. inhabitants alive. Frequently asked questions

What is Mahri Nui in BIONICLE?
Mahri Nui was a Matoran settlement on the floor of Voya Nui Bay, enclosed in a permanent bubble of breathable air. Its foundation was a chunk of land blasted loose from Voya Nui during the Great Cataclysm that sank into the bay carrying Matoran survivors, who landed near the Fields of Air and built a civilisation around the bubble-producing airweed plants.
How did Mahri Nui keep its air bubble inflated?
The bubble was the continuous output of the Fields of Air, an underwater plain of airweed plants whose internal cavities released breathable air when harvested. The harvest was carried out by Hydruka, aquatic scorpion-like Rahi that the Matoran had domesticated over generations, and the bubble had to be replenished day and night to keep the settlement alive.
How did the Kanohi Ignika reach Mahri Nui?
The sentry Kyrehx spotted a Kanohi mask falling slowly through the deeps beyond the city and swam out beyond the bubble to retrieve it. The mask was the Kanohi Ignika, recently surfaced from the Chamber of Life beneath Mount Valmai and bonded to no one, and none of the Matoran of Mahri Nui recognised it.
Why did Dekar try to destroy the Mask of Life?
Dekar noticed the mask had healed cuts on his armour and a small wound he tested it on, and after several minutes he understood he was holding the Kanohi Ignika and realised a mask of that power in the wrong hands would dwarf the damage of the Great Cataclysm. His attempt failed because every weapon he turned on it was deflected, and the Ignika manifested a guardian by enlarging a nearby Venom Eel to over 300 bio in length.
What happened when Pridak took the Kanohi Ignika from Dekar?
Pridak cornered Dekar and seized the mask while Brutaka, who had claimed it for the Order of Mata Nui, was being dragged into the Black Water by Kalmah's squid. The Ignika gave off a flash of light that expanded across the bay and enveloped all of Mahri Nui, beginning the transformation that would turn the inbound Toa Inika into the Toa Mahri.
