Onu-Matoran of Mahri Nui

Gar was an Onu-Matoran of Mahri Nui and Defilak's best friend, one of the four submariners captured by Pridak in the Black Water and the volunteer who offered to sacrifice himself so that Idris could carry the warning back to the underwater city.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Gar in BIONICLE?
Gar was an Onu-Matoran of Mahri Nui and the best friend of the Le-Matoran Defilak. He was one of the four submariners aboard Defilak's Submarine when it descended into the Black Water and was captured by Pridak.
How did Gar end up in Mahri Nui?
Gar was sent to Karzahni for repair, but the repair failed, so Karzahni exiled him to the Southern Continent. He was living in a coastal settlement on the part of the continent that broke loose to become Voya Nui, and then on the beach village that detached and sank to become Mahri Nui, where the Pit mutagen transformed him into an Onu-Matoran.
Why did Gar offer to sacrifice himself?
After Pridak left the holding cave with Defilak, Gar and Idris were the two prisoners left behind. Gar offered to sacrifice himself so that Idris could reach Mahri Nui and warn the Matoran there, even though the two were from different tribes and had no prior history.
Did Gar's sacrifice actually happen?
No. Both Gar and Idris reached the airweed fields without losing their air bubbles, so the sacrifice was not needed. They were then trapped between Carapar's Keras army and their depleting air, and Defilak, who had escaped Pridak, helped them through the Keras line back to Mahri Nui.
What happened to Gar at the end?
The Mask of Life reversed the mutagen's effects and restored Gar to his pre-Pit form, after which he lived for a time on the Southern Continent. When the Matoran Universe was evacuated following the Battle of Bara Magna, Gar was among the evacuees who relocated to Spherus Magna.
