Vahki
Metru Nui's mechanical law enforcement squads, designed to maintain rigid order but ultimately undermined by chaos beyond their programming.

Vahki were Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive.'s law enforcement. These robotic squads patrolled the city's districts in the years before the Great Cataclysm, each model designed for order enforcement in a specific zone. Their purpose was singular: maintain order through mechanical discipline. For years, the system worked flawlessly. You'd recognize them from their motto, shouted at fleeing MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body.: surrender or run. By the time the Toa MetruMetruIn the Matoran language a metru was a single district of Metru Nui; the city was divided into six such districts, one for each element, and the term covered both the place and the elemental community that lived in it. arrived, the Vahki were already fracturing under pressure from threats beyond their programming, their rigid responses proving insufficient against chaos.
Models and Function#

Each Vahki model was built for specific duties within Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive.'s districts. The briefing the MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. received was straightforward: these were your enforcers. The Vahki's rigid programming meant they'd follow orders and protocols with mechanical precision, even when circumstances demanded flexibility they simply didn't have.
What made them effective was scale and specialization. Coordinated across Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive.'s six districts, they presented a unified enforcement presence that could suppress minor disturbances before they escalated. They communicated with each other, shared intelligence, and could overwhelm most threats through sheer coordination. Built to handle predictable problems, they were blind to anything that deviated from their protocols. But that same specialization was limiting: they were tools built for a city at peace, not a city under siege.
When Order Fell#
The Vahki were undone by a threat their programming couldn't handle. When the VisorakVisorak (Rahi)Spider-like Rahi employed by the Brotherhood of Makuta whose name meant 'Stealers of Life' and whose swarms threatened the Matoran Universe. invaded Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive., they faced an enemy unlike anything in their design specs. They'd been built to maintain order against expected threats: unruly MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body., minor rule-breaking, predictable scenarios. A plague of RahiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts. with unpredictable abilities and collective intelligence was outside their scope entirely.
By the time the MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. archives were sealed and the city fell into darkness, most Vahki were destroyed or overrun. The few that remained went dormant, waiting for orders that would never come. They'd represented Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive.'s faith in mechanical control and predictable governance. When that faith was tested against genuine chaos, it shattered completely. Their end came because the world became fundamentally unpredictable, and machinery built for order couldn't adapt.
