The Energy Extraction Rifle is a compact energy-draining weapon made on Xia, home of the Vortixx. It drains energy from other beings and stores it for use as a power source. It began as a fan entry in a BIONICLE storyline contest for new Xian weapons and was accepted into canon by Greg Farshtey, who later said that only its function is canon. TL;DR

The Energy Extraction Rifle drains the energy of other beings much as the Rahkshi Vorahk does, then stores that energy so the rifle can serve as a power source. The energy can't be passed directly into another being, and the rifle overloads if its charge isn't discharged properly. It began as a fan contest entry accepted into canon. Greg Farshtey later said only the weapon's function is canon, so the entry's backstory, about the Vortixx and the Makuta using it to make Kraata, isn't part of the official story.

Development on Xia#

The rifle is a Vortixx weapon from Xia. The contest entry that introduced it also gave it a history: the Vortixx, lacking powers of their own, built it to level the field against beings who had them, and sold it to wealthy species with no way to defend themselves. That backstory went on to say the rifle was once used by accident on a Makuta, leaving a Kraata clinging to it, and that the Makuta then used modified rifles to make Kraata until the damage each use caused made them impractical. Greg Farshtey later said that only the weapon's function is canon, so this history should be read as the entry's invention, not official story. (Energy Extraction Rifle contest entry)

Function#

The Energy Extraction Rifle drains a being's energy in much the same way as the Rahkshi Vorahk. Unlike the Vorahk's hunger, the rifle stores what it takes, and that energy can then be used as a quick, efficient power source. It can't be transferred directly into another being, which makes the rifle of little use to some stronger species. It can drain large amounts of power, but it is fragile and overloads if the energy isn't properly discharged. (Energy Extraction Rifle contest entry)

What is the Energy Extraction Rifle?: It is a compact energy-draining weapon made on Xia. It drains energy from other beings and stores it, so the rifle can then serve as a power source.
Where does the Energy Extraction Rifle come from?: It began as a fan entry in a BIONICLE storyline contest for new Xian weapons, and Greg Farshtey accepted it into canon. He later said that only the weapon's function is canon, not the backstory the entry gave it.
Is the story about the Makuta and Kraata canon?: No. The contest entry said the Makuta once used the rifle to make Kraata, but Greg Farshtey later said only the rifle's function counts, so that backstory isn't part of the official story.
