Power#

The Mohtrek did not produce illusions or biological clones. When activated, it reached into the wearer's own past and drew a previous version of the wearer forward into the present moment. Each duplicate was a complete being with full memory of its own life up to the instant of summoning. None of the summoned past selves retained any knowledge of the future they were being brought into, and they had to be directed by the present-day wearer.

The mask placed a heavy cost on the wearer. If any summoned past self died while in the present, the wearer was erased from existence and replaced by a timeline in which they had died at that earlier point in their life. The risk scaled with the number of duplicates summoned, since each one represented a fresh point of failure.

The summoning required sustained concentration. The greater the number of past selves drawn forward, the harder the link was to maintain. A loss of focus broke the connection and returned the duplicates to their own time.

On their return, the duplicates retained no memory of their visit to the future. Physical damage, however, was carried back unaltered. Any wound suffered while in the present remained with the past self after the link was broken, and that past self then lived out the rest of their personal history bearing the injury.

Limits and risks#

The Mohtrek's principal hazard was the recursive risk to its wearer's own existence. Unlike the Kanohi VahiMask of TimeThe Kanohi Vahi is the Matoran Universe's deadliest mask, capable of stopping or accelerating time, and its creation nearly tore Metru Nui apart., which manipulated the flow of time without creating fresh entities, the Mohtrek produced physical past selves whose deaths could retroactively unmake the user.

The memory wipe at the close of each use prevented the wearer from gaining strategic foreknowledge of events through their own duplicates. Information could not propagate backwards along the chain, only injury. The mask was therefore best suited to immediate tactical use, in which the duplicates served as a temporary fighting force, rather than to long-range planning.
