Organic Bird
A minor Rahi glimpsed in 2001 animations, these black and grey birds represent one of Mata Nui's few purely organic creatures.

One of the easiest details to overlook in Bionicle's 2001 debut is the organic life that existed alongside the artificial inhabitants of Mata NuiMata Nui (Location)An island created by accident on the Great Spirit's face, home to the Matoran for a thousand years.. A Glimpse of Life#
The Organic Birds appear only in the 2001 animation sequences. When the Toa Canisters land and begin their emergence on Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna., several of these creatures fly freely across the sky without any apparent mechanical enhancement or artificial purpose. Their black and grey plumage blends with the environment. The fact that they exist at all is significant.

They're never mentioned again. No character interacts with them. No plot relies on them.
Canon Scarcity#
Here's the honest part: we know almost nothing else. The birds aren't named individually. They serve no narrative function. The animation in which they appear was meant to ground the Toa in a living world, and the Organic Birds are part of that texture. Beyond their visual appearance in that scene, canon is silent. No book describes them. No serial explores them.
This makes them a perfect example of Bionicle's worldbuilding by implication. The designers included them to suggest a living, breathing island, and that was enough. Fans have collectively called them "Organic Birds" largely as a placeholder, a way to reference what we saw without pretending we know more than we do.
