The Predator#

Sea Spiders occupy a specific and brutal role in the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control.'s food chain. They hunt VisorakVisorak (Rahi)Spider-like Rahi employed by the Brotherhood of Makuta whose name meant 'Stealers of Life' and whose swarms threatened the Matoran Universe., a fact that places them among the universe's most dangerous predators. The mechanics of this hunt reveal careful evolutionary design. The Sea Spider's front legs don't just strike with raw force. They shrink whatever they touch, reducing a full-sized VisorakVisorak (Rahi)Spider-like Rahi employed by the Brotherhood of Makuta whose name meant 'Stealers of Life' and whose swarms threatened the Matoran Universe. to something the creature can then restrain and finish with its RhotukaRhotukaRhotuka were wheels of pure energy generated by living beings, shaped by the user''s nature, and launched through natural or artificial launchers. launcher. That launcher fires spinners that induce stasis, leaving prey helpless and defenseless. The combination is efficient. A Solitary Temperament#

What makes the Sea Spider genuinely strange isn't its power. It's the creature's complete inability to tolerate its own kind. Sea Spiders actively hate each other. When two encounter one another, they fight without hesitation or visible cause beyond mutual species recognition. This hostility is absolute and appears to be instinctive. The Sea Spider does not.

There's a deeper contradiction built into this creature's design, though. The fear doesn't diminish the Sea Spider's hunting prowess. It just exists alongside that power, an odd piece of the creature's nature that doesn't fit its otherwise confident predatory design.
