Amelia Kyne: The Face the Marker Wore

Amelia Kyne was the wife of Dr. Terrence Kyne, Chief Science Officer of the USG Ishimura, and she was already seven years dead when the ship arrived at Aegis VII. She never set foot aboard the vessel, yet her presence shaped the final weeks of its history more than many of the living. Marker 3A recreated her image inside her husband's mind, and through that borrowed face the artifact steered one of the most brilliant scientists of the Church of Unitology toward its own ends, just as it wore the face of Nicole Brennan to guide Isaac Clarke.

A death that made a believer#

Almost nothing was recorded of Amelia Kyne's own life. What history preserved of her came through her husband, and through what her loss did to him. According to Dr. Challus Mercer, Amelia had died seven years before the events on Aegis VII, and her death marked the darkest period of Terrence Kyne's life. In his grief the widowed scientist took solace in the teachings of Unitology, and he came to credit the Church with saving his life. He rose to become a devout and high ranking member of the faith and devoted his career to the Black Marker, building his theories from a handful of pages salvaged from Michael Altman's notebooks until he was the Church's foremost authority on the artifact.

That expertise, born of the void Amelia left behind, was what placed Kyne aboard the USG Ishimura as its Chief Science Officer, tasked with retrieving Marker 3A from Aegis VII. In a grim sense, Amelia's death set her husband on the path that led him to the Marker, and the Marker did not overlook the wound she had left in him.

The apparition aboard the Ishimura#

As the Necromorph outbreak consumed the Ishimura, Kyne turned against his Church, accidentally killed Captain Benjamin Mathius, sabotaged the ship's engines to keep the Marker from ever reaching Earth, and retreated to a hideout on the Mining Deck. It was there, after an encounter in which Nicole Brennan reminded him of the love he had lost by speaking of her own love for Isaac Clarke, that Kyne began to feel the presence of his dead wife.

The visitation was no ghost. Marker 3A had recreated the image of Amelia in Terrence's mind, in the same manner that it later recreated Nicole Brennan before Isaac Clarke. At first "Amelia" was only a voice in the doctor's head, but Kyne soon slipped into a completely delusional state and began seeing and speaking to his deceased wife as if she were real. The deception was total. Kyne had been fully aware that his wife was dead for years, and he was, of all the souls aboard the Ishimura, the one best educated in the dementia and hallucinations the Marker induced. None of that knowledge protected him. His love for Amelia fed the delusion, and the walls of his hideout filled with scrawled messages addressed to her. The apparition repeatedly told Terrence to "make us whole," the same words the false Nicole spoke to Isaac.

The irony of his condition was not lost on the ship's other Marker scholar. Mercer, himself deep in zealotry, was still able to point out that Kyne had fallen under the artifact's influence, remarking when the doctor claimed to have spoken with his wife that Amelia Kyne had been dead for some years. Kyne remained completely oblivious to what had taken hold of him.

The errand of the dead#

The purpose of the hallucination was precise. The false Amelia convinced Terrence that his only course was to carry the Marker back to its pedestal on Aegis VII, promising that this would return the Hive Mind, the vast organism that directed the Necromorphs, to its slumber. The Marker's true intention was nothing of the kind. It sought to imprint its codes and blueprints in the doctor's mind so that the artifact could one day be reproduced, and it kept Kyne entirely unaware of that design.

Driven by his wife's borrowed voice, Kyne held a miner hostage on the Mining Deck and demanded the access codes to the Marker's cargo bay, without success. When the crew of the USG Kellion arrived, the apparition turned his attention toward the newcomer Isaac Clarke; among the messages in Kyne's hideout was one that read "She's right! He can help us!" Kyne contacted Isaac, pleaded with him to repair the Executive Shuttle and return the Marker, and finally met him on the Crew Deck, where he showed the engineer a recording of the Hive Mind and won his help. Witnesses to that meeting saw how far the delusion had gone. As Kyne turned to leave, he paused to take "Amelia" by the arm and walked her to the door, escorting empty air with a husband's courtesy. While he guarded the shuttle and waited for Isaac to gather its navigation cards, he was heard rambling to the hallucination, and as the plan neared completion he muttered to her that soon they would "take it home" and "make them whole again."

Walking away#

Amelia's last appearance came at the moment of her husband's death. Kyne piloted the shuttle to the hangar bay, collecting Kendra Daniels on the way, and Isaac loaded the Marker aboard. Before the two men could depart for Aegis VII, Daniels shot Kyne and escaped with both the shuttle and the artifact. Falling to his knees, the doctor gasped for Amelia to come back to him before he collapsed and died. His dying words seemed to indicate that he was seeing Amelia walking away from him, a sign that the Marker was abandoning the dying scientist as a potential vessel for its signal. The image it had built from his grief had served its purpose, and it did not stay to comfort him.

Amelia Kyne's afterlife as an instrument of the Marker became one of the clearest recorded demonstrations of how the artifacts worked upon the human mind. Like the false Nicole who led Isaac Clarke through the Ishimura, the false Amelia proved that the Markers did not simply drive people mad at random. They reached into memory, chose the dead who were most loved, and sent them back as messengers, and even a man who understood the mechanism better than almost anyone alive could not refuse the face it wore.
