Kaleb: Xenogeologist of the Sprawl

Kaleb was a Xenogeologist employed by the Concordance Extraction Corporation aboard Titan Station, the orbital settlement known to its residents as the Sprawl. He worked in the station's mining facilities as part of Shift 1, the same work crew as Ellie Langford, and when the Necromorph outbreak of 2511 tore through the CEC sector he became one of the last survivors of the company's workforce. Gravely wounded and cornered with Ellie by the reanimated remains of their own colleagues, Kaleb chose to stay behind and hold the line with an industrial Line Gun, buying his coworker the time she needed to get away. His final recording, and the detonation that followed it, marked the end of the CEC crews on the Sprawl.

A Xenogeologist on Titan Station#

Nothing was recorded of Kaleb's life before his employment on the Sprawl, the sprawling civilian station built around the cracked remains of Titan. The CEC maintained a full mining and processing operation there, worked around the clock by numbered shifts, and Kaleb served on Shift 1 as a Xenogeologist, a specialist in the study of extraterrestrial rock and mineral formations. He wore the standard RIG issued to station personnel and worked alongside Ellie Langford, a heavy equipment pilot assigned to the same shift.

The shift system meant that Kaleb's fate was bound to the men and women who shared his rotation. When disaster came to the station, it found the CEC facilities at full strength, with every shift on duty at once. That accident of scheduling put the entire workforce in the path of the outbreak in a single stroke, and it made the mining sector one of the killing grounds of the Sprawl.

The outbreak in the CEC facilities#

When the Necromorph outbreak reached the CEC facilities, Kaleb's team was attacked almost immediately. Three of his crew were killed in the first assault, and repeated attempts to raise Shift 4 on communications brought no answer. The silence from Shift 4 soon explained itself in the worst possible way. Kaleb was eventually contacted by Sorenson, a worker from Shift 2, whose own crew was under attack by the reanimated corpses of the missing shift. The dead of Shift 4 had not gone quiet; they had been remade into the creatures now hunting the living through the facility.

The two groups coordinated their escape. Kaleb's survivors from Shift 1, Ellie among them, abandoned their duties and fought their way through the CEC facility toward the Government Sector, the most heavily secured region of the station. Rather than attempt a rendezvous in the chaos, Sorenson urged the workers of Shift 2 to locate the signal of Ellie's RIG and follow her route to safety, and his group trailed behind Kaleb's along the path it marked. In the corridors of a facility built for ore processing rather than defense, the plan was the best that either man could offer his people.

It was not enough. The survivors' numbers dwindled steadily as they struggled to find a way out of the facility, the dead of each ambush rising to join the creatures that had killed them. In time the two combined groups had been whittled down to two people: Kaleb and Ellie.

Last stand in the storage room#

By the time the pair were cornered, Kaleb was gravely injured. The creatures closing in on their position were what remained of their own crew, coworkers they had known by name, now reshaped into weapons of the infection. Kaleb understood that in his condition he could not make the run to safety, and he refused to let Ellie die waiting for him. He took up a Line Gun, the heavy ore cutting tool that CEC crews across the settled systems had turned against the Necromorphs, and made himself the last line of defense so that Ellie could escape.

Kaleb used the tool to rig a timed mine and made a final recording as the creatures closed in. He identified himself calmly, "This is Kaleb, from shift 1", and ended the transmission with two words that served as the epitaph of the entire CEC workforce on the Sprawl: "We lost". The mine detonated in the storage room where he made his stand, killing him and taking several Necromorphs with him. He died in 2511, the last of Shift 1 save for the woman he saved.

Aftermath#

Kaleb's sacrifice bought Ellie her life, but it cost her something as well. His death left her suffering from survivor's guilt, and the wound shaped her behavior through the rest of the disaster. When she first encountered Isaac Clarke, she was aggressive and distrustful toward him, treating other people as liabilities to be avoided even when isolation lowered her own chances of living through the outbreak. The lesson she had taken from the CEC facility was that companions died, and that watching them die was worse than facing the creatures alone.

The facility itself became Kaleb's grave. When Isaac and Ellie later ventured back through the CEC sector in search of transportation off the station, Isaac came across Kaleb's bloodied body lying in a room infested with Stalkers and Cysts, the outbreak having grown over the site of his last stand. Of the workers he had tried to lead out, only Ellie was known with certainty to have survived; Sorenson's later recordings placed him at Titan Heights near the departing shuttles, leaving open the possibility that the Shift 2 leader had also escaped the station. Whatever became of the others, the recording Kaleb left behind preserved the truth of what happened to the mining crews of the Sprawl in the plainest terms he could manage. They fought, they ran, and they lost, and one of them held the door on his way down.
