Paleontology Sector

Fossil research wing of Facility Two

The Paleontology Sector was a section of Facility Two on Tau Volantis devoted to the study of the extinct aliens and Necromorph fossils. It housed an artifact analysis lab, the barracks of the 163rd Reaper Unit, and a chamber known as the Zoo.

By Joe Garratt

The Paleontology Sector was a section of Facility Two on Tau Volantis, connected to the Biology Sector by a hallway. It was given over to the study of the planet's extinct alien inhabitants and of old Necromorph fossils, among them a Snow Beast specimen.

Layout#

The Paleontology Sector was dedicated to the study of the extinct alien species and of the old fossils of certain Necromorphs, such as a Snow Beast specimen. Its main entrance sat near the exterior gate of the compound, though an interior crossover also connected it to the neurology section of the adjoining Biology Sector. The barracks of the 163rd Reaper Unit were located within the sector as well.

A bridge ran between the biological laboratory and the Paleontology Sector to allow travel indoors. Its entrance on the Biology side opened from the second floor of the neurology section, and on the Paleontology side from an office near the Artifact Analysis room.

Artifact Analysis#

The Artifact Analysis room was a laboratory built over two floors. The upper level was used mainly for maintenance and held the entrance to the crossover bridge, while the lower level held a medium-sized research site. At its center stood an analysis tool apparently used to study artifacts recovered from the planet, such as pieces of the Rosetta. A suction tool near one wall was used to move artifact fragments to the main Rosetta lab. Workstations lined the walls, covered with scientific records of the aliens along with x-rays and images of various Necromorphs.

The barracks and maintenance areas#

The elevator leading down to the 163rd Reaper Unit's barracks stood just beside the analysis room. Next to the barracks ran a maintenance hallway with a decontamination control room, its walls set with glowing windows that presumably looked into further laboratories, and lined with pipes carrying corrosive decontamination fluid used to treat outbreaks. Beside that hallway was an office belonging to the sector's paleontology specialists.

The Zoo#

The sector's Taphonomy Laboratory was a large chamber holding the huge fossil of a dead Snow Beast, an area the crew who worked there nicknamed the Zoo. It contained a piece of Rosetta and many workstations bearing images and drawings of different Necromorphs as well as the extinct aliens, and its roof carried windows open to the sky. A staircase led up to a further room with an airlock separating the sector from the outside, its door sitting just beside the main gate of Facility Two.
