What Happened to Isaac Clarke After Dead Space 3?
Nobody knows for sure. Isaac survived the fall at the end of Dead Space 3, and in the Awakened DLC he flew home with John Carver, only to find the Brethren Moons already attacking Earth. The story stops there. Here is what the main ending and Awakened show.
After Dead Space 3, Isaac Clarke's fate is unknown. He survived the fall that ends the main game, and the Awakened DLC shows him and John Carver escaping Tau Volantis and jumping home to Earth. They arrive to find the Brethren Moons already attacking the planet, and as one rises in front of their ship, the screen goes dark. No game since has picked the story up. (Dead Space 3; Dead Space 3: Awakened)
How Dead Space 3 ends#
At the core of the alien Machine, Jacob Danik switches it off, and the Tau Volantis Moon wakes and starts tearing the planet apart to reach it. Isaac knows they can't all get out. He kisses Ellie Langford goodbye and she leaves on a shuttle. Isaac and Carver fight their way up into the Moon, set the Machine back to work, and bring the Moon crashing down into the planet. They go down with it. (Dead Space 3)
On her ship Ellie grieves, but her instruments show the Marker signal is gone, and she sets a course for Earth. After the credits there's a short clip: Isaac's voice calling "Ellie", and his breathing. So the main game ends with him alive, somewhere in the wreckage, with no word on what comes next. (Dead Space 3)
What Awakened shows#
The Awakened DLC answers the cliffhanger. Isaac and Carver wake on the surface, alive, on a planet where the signal is still driving people mad and making Necromorphs. The surviving Unitologists of the Circle have been lifting off for the CMS Terra Nova in orbit, and the two follow, because the old ship is their only way home. (Dead Space 3: Awakened)
On board, the Circle has split. Danik's second-in-command, Randall Carr, has tried to lead the survivors home, but many follow a new prophet, the Cult Leader, who speaks for the Moons and torments Isaac and Carver with visions. They break his hold by smashing the Red Markers in one of those visions. (Dead Space 3: Awakened)
The Moons keep working on them. Isaac becomes convinced that if they go home, the Moons will follow. He and Carver fight each other inside a shared hallucination, and then the Moons themselves tell them the delay is pointless: they've always known where Earth is. Isaac gives in. They overload the reactor to power a jump, and the Terra Nova goes to Sol. (Dead Space 3: Awakened)
The last scene#
They try to call Earth and hear only people being slaughtered. Brethren Moons hang over the planet, already attacking it. One of them rises in front of the ship and seems to crash into it, both men are knocked out, and the screen goes dark. (Dead Space 3: Awakened)
That's where the story stops. Whether the Moon really struck the ship or it was another vision, and whether Isaac or Carver survived, are left open. Ellie, who set off for Earth before them, is unaccounted for too. (Dead Space 3; Dead Space 3: Awakened)
What it means#
The fight on Tau Volantis was supposed to save humanity. Awakened shows it only bought time. Destroying one Moon didn't stop the others, and the Convergence the Unitologists prayed for has reached Earth itself. (Dead Space 3: Awakened)
Our reading, and only a reading: Isaac's story ends where it began, with him unable to stop what the Markers set in motion, but having refused, one more time, to give in to it quietly. In Dead Space 2 he chose to live rather than complete Convergence. In Awakened he goes home knowing what's waiting. Whether he's alive in a sequel is up to whoever makes one. (Dead Space 2; Dead Space 3: Awakened)
The full plot is in Dead Space 3 ending explained, the whole saga is covered in Dead Space story explained, and the Dead Space timeline puts 2514 in context. (Dead Space 3; Dead Space 3: Awakened)
Frequently asked questions
- Does Isaac Clarke die in Dead Space 3?
- Not in the main game. He and Carver fall with the dying Moon, but a post-credits clip has Isaac calling for Ellie, and Awakened picks up with both of them alive on Tau Volantis.
- Is Isaac dead at the end of Awakened?
- It's left open. Awakened ends with a Brethren Moon rising in front of their ship over Earth and the screen going dark. Whether it struck the ship, and whether either man survived, isn't shown.
- What happened to Ellie after Dead Space 3?
- She escaped Tau Volantis on a shuttle and set a course for Earth. Awakened shows the Moons reached Earth soon after, so her fate is unknown too.
- Is there a Dead Space 4?
- No sequel has been released. Awakened is still the latest point in the story, so Isaac's fate has never been resolved.

How Did Isaac Destroy the Marker in Dead Space?
It depends which Marker. Isaac never destroys Marker 3A in the first game, he puts it back. The Marker he destroys is the Site 12 Marker in Dead Space 2, by refusing to die for it and fighting it inside his own head. Here's how each game handles it, original and remake.
