What Happened to Nicole Brennan?
Nicole Brennan killed herself aboard the USG Ishimura during the outbreak, before Isaac Clarke ever arrived. The Nicole he follows through Dead Space is a hallucination made by the Marker, and it haunts him again in Dead Space 2. Here is what happened to her, and to the vision that wore her face.
Nicole Brennan killed herself aboard the USG Ishimura during the Necromorph outbreak, before Isaac Clarke ever reached the ship. She was its senior medical officer and Isaac's girlfriend. The Nicole he sees and talks to all through Dead Space is a hallucination created by the Marker, and the same vision haunts him three years later in Dead Space 2, until he destroys it. (Dead Space; Dead Space 2)
Nicole on the Ishimura#
Nicole was the senior medical officer of the Ishimura when it came to crack Aegis VII in 2508. The ship's Unitologist captain, Benjamin Mathius, brought Marker 3A aboard, and madness and murder followed it. The Medical Deck filled with the wounded, then with the dead getting back up. (Dead Space; Dead Space: Downfall)
Dead Space: Extraction shows her at work in those days. A small group of colonists who fled to the ship were brought to her for examination, and she cleared them of infection before they set off to find a way off the ship. She stayed on the Medical Deck. (Dead Space: Extraction)
The 2023 remake adds more of her side through logs. In one, found in New Game Plus, Nicole manages to speak to the Marker through a hallucination that takes the form of Isaac's mother. She begs it to stop, and it tells her to return the Marker to its place on the planet. (Dead Space (2023))
How she died#
With no way to stop the outbreak, Nicole recorded a last message to Isaac. She apologised and told him she loved him, then took her own life. In Extraction, two of the colonists stumble on the transmission as it goes out, but it runs one way, so they can only watch. (Dead Space; Dead Space: Extraction)
Isaac had his own reason to join the Kellion's repair mission to the silent ship: Nicole was on board. He'd received the start of her message on the way in, upset and apologising, and he never watched to the end. (Dead Space)
The Nicole who wasn't there#
Through the whole of Dead Space, Isaac keeps catching glimpses of Nicole, and then she starts talking to him. She helps him, guides him, and leads him to take the Marker back down to its pedestal on Aegis VII. (Dead Space)
On the planet, Kendra Daniels makes Isaac watch the end of the message. Nicole had died before the Kellion arrived, and every conversation he'd had with her was the Marker using his grief to move him. As he escapes, a bloodied vision of her lunges at him. In the 2023 remake, the person he'd really been working beside is the botanist Elizabeth Cross, who, under the Marker herself, saw him as her own dead partner. (Dead Space; Dead Space (2023))
Nicole in Dead Space 2#
Three years later on Titan Station, the vision of Nicole is back, and it's no longer kind. She's angry and bloodied, taunting Isaac about her death and about how he ignored her when she needed him. (Dead Space 2)
In the mines, she demands he tell her who she really is to him and why he can't let go. He tells her the truth: she was everything, and without her he'd have nothing left. Her face heals and she guides him from then on. At the Site 12 Marker she reveals the last step: Isaac built the Marker from his mind, so he has to die for Convergence to be complete. Isaac refuses, fights her inside his own head and destroys her with the Marker. (Dead Space 2)
What it means#
The real Nicole died trying to help people, and her story ends on the Ishimura in 2508. What follows Isaac afterwards is something the Marker built from his memories, his grief and his guilt. Our reading, and only a reading: Dead Space 2 is the point where Isaac finally accepts that she's gone, and that's what lets him beat the Marker. (Dead Space 2)
