Dead Space 2 Story Explained: Plot Summary and Ending

The full story of Dead Space 2, from Isaac Clarke waking in a straitjacket on Titan Station to the fight inside his own head, with the ending and the post-credits call explained.

By Joe Garratt

Dead Space 2 came out in January 2011, made by Visceral Games. It's set in 2511, three years after the first game, on the Sprawl, a city built on a shard of Saturn's moon Titan. Isaac Clarke wakes with no memory of the past three years, a new Necromorph outbreak spreading around him and his dead girlfriend talking in his head. This page covers the whole plot and the ending, so it has full spoilers. (Dead Space 2)

Before the story begins#

At the end of Dead Space, Isaac put Marker 3A back on its pedestal on Aegis VII. The pulse planted the full blueprints for making a Marker in his mind. EarthGov picked up his drifting shuttle about three weeks later, and he spent the next three years in the Titan Memorial Medical Center on Titan Station, with Dr. Nolan Stross, a survivor of a later trip to Aegis VII. (Dead Space; Dead Space: Aftermath; Dead Space 2)

Under Director Hans Tiedemann, EarthGov mined both men's memories to build a giant new Marker, the Site 12 Marker, in the Government Sector, and kept Isaac drugged so he wouldn't remember. The Church of Unitology wanted Isaac too, because he could build more Markers. In the hours before the game starts, Unitologist agents sabotaged the station and let the first Necromorphs loose. The spin-offs Dead Space: Ignition and the 2011 mobile game cover that night. (Dead Space 2; Dead Space: Ignition; Dead Space (mobile))

Waking up on Titan#

Isaac came round in a straitjacket in a cell covered in Marker symbols. A man named Franco Delille was freeing him when an Infector caught Franco and turned him into a Necromorph in front of him. Isaac ran, still strapped in, as patients and staff died around him. The straitjacket was the first of several suits Isaac wears on Titan. (Dead Space 2)

He got out of the hospital with help over the RIG from a woman calling herself Daina, who said she could cure the dementia that was killing him. Another voice reached him too: Stross, a fellow patient, who said they could destroy "the Marker". Isaac didn't know what that meant and ignored him. Meanwhile, Tiedemann ordered his security forces to kill the project's key subjects, Isaac among them. (Dead Space 2)

Nicole kept appearing. She wasn't the helpful ghost of the first game. This Nicole Brennan was angry and bloodied, taunting him about her death and about how he'd ignored her when she needed him. (Dead Space 2)

The Church and the betrayal#

Isaac crossed the city toward Daina, through the shops of the Concourse and the Unitologist apartments of Cassini Towers, then up through the Church of Unitology and its funerary crypt. He reached her at the top of the church. It was a trap. Daina Le Guin was a senior Unitologist, and the cure had always been bait. Her men seized Isaac to take him to the Church so he could build more Markers. (Dead Space 2)

An EarthGov gunship arrived and shot Daina and her people to pieces, and the room decompressed. Isaac dropped into a vent and ran into a massive fused Necromorph, the Tormentor, which knocked him out into space. Clinging to the gunship, he shot an explosive canister that destroyed both the gunship and the Tormentor, and the blast threw him back into Cassini Towers. (Dead Space 2)

Now he had no one else to trust, so he listened to Stross. The Marker was in the Government Sector. EarthGov had built it from what was in Isaac's head, and it was causing the outbreak. Destroying it was the only way out. (Dead Space 2)

Ellie and Stross#

Heading for the transport hub through a daycare centre and the overrun Titan Elementary School, Isaac heard from Ellie Langford, a CEC pilot whose crew had all died. She had found Stross and was holding him at gunpoint. The three agreed to head for the Government Sector together. Isaac restored power through the Solar Array, and Tiedemann threw everything he had at them, at one point using the array to cut the rail line they were riding. (Dead Space 2)

To pull the Government Sector line back together, Isaac had to use the gravity tethers of a ship docked at the station: the USG Ishimura, towed to Titan after the first game and being decommissioned. Walking its halls again brought back everything he'd tried to forget, and Nicole's attacks got worse. (Dead Space 2)

Stross was breaking down too. Back on the USG O'Bannon he had killed his own wife and son, believing he was saving them, and now he was sure he needed to "see" the Marker. While Isaac was on the Ishimura, Stross attacked Ellie and stabbed out one of her eyes with a screwdriver. In the mines he ambushed Isaac, who killed him. (Dead Space: Aftermath; Dead Space 2)

Acceptance#

In the mines on the way to the Government Sector, Nicole stopped Isaac and demanded he tell her who she really was to him and why he couldn't let go. He told her the truth: she was everything, and without her he'd have nothing left. That was what she was waiting for. Her face healed, she looked as she had when she was alive, and from then on she guided him. The last step, she said, would be acceptance. (Dead Space 2)

Isaac and Ellie drilled into the Government Sector with a mining machine. Ellie found a working gunship. Isaac started it from outside and sent her away alone, telling her she'd be safe. Then he cut the power to the security lobby and let a flood of Necromorphs in to slaughter Tiedemann's guards. (Dead Space 2)

The ending explained#

Isaac followed the horde in. The Necromorphs had gathered around the Marker in such numbers that, as Tiedemann told him, they had set off a Convergence far bigger than anything he'd planned for. Nearby stood the machine Stross had been obsessed with, the Noonlight diagnostics machine, which drove a needle through the eye to reach the part of Isaac's brain where the Marker's signal lived. Nicole said he needed it to learn how to destroy the Marker, and that yes, it would hurt. He went through with it. On the far side an Ubermorph, a creature that couldn't be killed, only slowed down, hunted him the rest of the way. (Dead Space 2)

At the Marker he found Tiedemann waiting with a Javelin gun. Isaac disarmed him and killed him. Then Nicole told him the truth: the Marker could only be complete through the death of its creator. Isaac had built it from his own mind, so his body and mind were the last piece Convergence needed. (Dead Space 2)

The Marker pulled him inside his own head, and the final fight takes place there, against the Marker's hold on his mind, a huge beating heart, and the Nicole vision. Isaac destroyed both, and with them the Marker's hold on him. The Site 12 Marker crumbled, and Isaac slumped to the floor and waited to die. (Dead Space 2)

He didn't. Ellie hadn't left. She smashed the gunship through the roof of the Marker chamber, Isaac flew up to it through the failing gravity, and they got out as the Sprawl blew apart behind them. Isaac sat beside her and half expected her to be another hallucination. She wasn't. (Dead Space 2)

What it means: Dead Space 2 is about Isaac finally grieving. In the first game the Marker used Nicole to move him around. This time it used his guilt, and he won by admitting what she meant to him and letting her go. Destroying the Marker from inside his own mind also freed him from it, at least for now, though he still carried its blueprints. (Dead Space 2)

After the credits, an EarthGov voice reports to a superior known as the Overseer that Site 12 has been lost. The reply: then the other sites will have to pick up the pieces. Titan wasn't the only one. EarthGov had Marker sites across its colonies, and that's where Dead Space 3 begins. (Dead Space 2)

Severed: Gabe and Lexine on Titan#

The DLC Dead Space 2: Severed runs alongside the main story. Gabe Weller, who survived the first outbreak in Dead Space: Extraction, fought his way from the mines to the hospital to reach his pregnant wife, Lexine Weller, who was also on Tiedemann's kill list. His commander, Victor Bartlett, tried to kill them both, and Gabe died opening the airlock so Lexine and their unborn child could escape. (Dead Space 2: Severed)

What it sets up#

Isaac and Ellie settled on Luna. Three years later the other Marker sites had fallen to a Unitologist uprising, and EarthGov came back for the one man who'd destroyed a Marker. That story is in Dead Space 3 ending explained. The whole saga is in Dead Space story explained, and the Dead Space timeline has the fall of Titan in context. (Dead Space 3)

Frequently asked questions

What happens at the end of Dead Space 2?
Isaac reaches the Site 12 Marker, kills Director Tiedemann, and is pulled into his own mind by the Marker's version of Nicole. He destroys her and the Marker with her, the station starts to collapse, and Ellie flies the gunship through the roof to rescue him.
Is Nicole real in Dead Space 2?
No. She's the Marker's hallucination, built from Isaac's guilt and grief. She tries to frighten him, then guide him, and at the end tries to get him to die so his body can complete Convergence.
Who built the Marker in Dead Space 2?
EarthGov built the Site 12 Marker under Titan Station using the blueprints the Marker on Aegis VII had planted in Isaac's mind. They mined his memory for three years, along with Nolan Stross's, under Director Hans Tiedemann.
What does the Dead Space 2 post-credits scene mean?
An EarthGov official reports that Site 12 is gone, and his superior replies that the other sites will have to pick up the pieces. Titan was only one of several Marker sites, which sets up the Marker outbreaks of Dead Space 3.
Does Ellie die in Dead Space 2?
No. Stross stabs out one of her eyes, but she survives, takes the gunship Isaac sends her away in, and comes back to rescue him at the end.
What happened to Isaac between Dead Space 1 and 2?
EarthGov picked up his shuttle about three weeks after Aegis VII and held him in an asylum on Titan Station for three years, mining his mind for the Marker blueprints and suppressing his memories with drugs.
