Site 12 Marker
EarthGov's Grown Marker on Titan Station
The Site 12 Marker was a gigantic Red Marker grown by EarthGov on Titan Station as part of Project Telomere, built from blueprints drawn out of Isaac Clarke''s mind. Its signal triggered the Necromorph outbreak that destroyed the Sprawl in 2511.
The Site 12 Marker was a gigantic Red Marker created by EarthGov in the Government Sector of Titan Station as part of Project Telomere. It was described as a fully expressed physical representation of the algorithms that Marker 3A had embedded in the mind of Isaac Clarke. It was the source of the Necromorph outbreak that destroyed the Sprawl, and possibly the largest Marker ever encountered by humanity.
Construction#
In 2508, scientists and engineers stationed on Titan Station began building the Site 12 Marker under the orders of Director Hans Tiedemann as part of Project Telomere. According to Tiedemann's logs, those involved had reached a consensus that humanity could no longer sustain itself and that EarthGov needed to study the Markers to secure new sources of energy. Many details of the process remained unrecorded, but the logs indicated that the Marker was grown from mineral printing baths layer by layer, using heuristic algorithms as its blueprints.
To obtain those blueprints, the EarthGov team studied the minds of Isaac Clarke, Nolan Stross, and at least three others who suffered mental illness brought on by a Marker's signal. Clarke and Stross were designated Patient 4 and Patient 5. The signal had implanted instructions in them earlier, in Isaac's case on Aegis VII, and that information was drawn out and studied through sessions in the Noonlight Diagnostics Machine, which sent a needle through the eye into the patient's brain. Memory suppressants were administered after each session to erase the patients' knowledge of the device and to keep their dementia in check.
According to Tiedemann, Isaac's Marker-touched mind was the purest of all the subjects, and the scientists deemed him essential to the project's success even as Tiedemann feared that his strong connection to the Marker could be dangerous. A lead scientist named Kinner Phelps remarked that the replication formulas in Isaac's brain were so clearly ordered that they kept replaying in his own mind. Growing obsessed with the formulas as though possessed by the Marker signal, Phelps recorded an episode in which he blacked out and woke to find he had unconsciously built a tiny Marker in one of the mineral baths.
Logs later recovered by Isaac revealed the underlying pattern. In certain individuals thought to have higher intelligence or a more compatible brain, the Marker signal could manifest as blueprints for the construction of new Markers, turning those people into vessels for the artifacts' propagation. People of lesser intelligence were instead driven to violence over time, becoming fodder for the Necromorphs.
Necromorph outbreak#
After it was built, the Site 12 Marker's signal began to leak through the containment shell meant to hold it, despite the scientists' efforts. Titan Station's population soon felt the effects, with growing numbers reporting anxiety and other psychological problems, and cases of extreme paranoia escalating into violent and homicidal acts, mirroring what had happened around Marker 3A after its discovery on Aegis VII. At Titan Elementary School, children were reported speaking with dead relatives, turning hostile toward one another, and suffering nightmares of the Necromorphs.
In 2511, a Unitologist group led by Daina Le Guin set the outbreak in motion. A sabotage operation in the Government Sector, carried out by Karrie Norton, unleashed the first Necromorphs. The creatures were briefly contained within the Government Sector as Norton realized what she had done and tried to undo it, but she was manipulated further by the Unitologists and unintentionally released the Necromorphs into the Public Sector. In the hours before Isaac's awakening, Tiedemann ordered a station-wide evacuation, and by the time Isaac reached the Government Sector almost all of Titan Station's residents had been killed or evacuated.
The Convergence Event#
Seemingly led by the Ubermorph, the Necromorphs launched an assault on the security forces in the Government Sector who stood between them and the Marker's chamber. When Isaac arrived at an overlook above the chamber, he found himself above a mass of Necromorphs gathered at the Marker's base. The apparition of Nicole Brennan appeared and told him they were all gathering around the Marker because Convergence was at hand.
While Tiedemann broadcast a holographic message from the foot of the Marker, where he had taken shelter in the dead space surrounding it, the sheer mass of bodies near the Marker triggered the start of the Convergence. The Marker flashed brightly and emitted a sound like a fog horn, and a rush of wind drew the Necromorphs up into the air. Asked what it was doing, the apparition of Nicole answered only that it was doing what it was made to do, and told Isaac he had to make them whole.
Destruction#
Following the apparition's instruction, Isaac used the Noonlight machine to activate the Marker-influenced parts of his brain, which revealed a message in Marker symbols reading that the world must end. He made his way to the foot of the Marker and found the apparition of Nicole bathed in light. After dealing with Tiedemann, Isaac embraced her, only for the figure to reveal its true purpose: to lead him to take his own life so the Marker could absorb its creator's body and complete the Convergence.
The struggle moved into Isaac's mind, where he fought the apparition of Nicole among shadows that resembled the Pack. By firing on the apparition he exposed and destroyed the parts of his brain the Red Marker still held. Emerging from his mind, he found the real Marker dead and crumbling. Isaac escaped with the help of Ellie Langford, but the station's reactor cores went unstable, and Titan Station and the remains of the Site 12 Marker were destroyed together.
Frequently asked questions
- What was the Site 12 Marker?
- The Site 12 Marker was a gigantic Red Marker built by EarthGov in the Government Sector of Titan Station as part of Project Telomere. It was described as a fully expressed physical representation of the algorithms that Marker 3A had embedded in the mind of Isaac Clarke, and it was possibly the largest Marker ever encountered by humanity.
- How was the Site 12 Marker built?
- Under Director Hans Tiedemann, EarthGov scientists grew the Marker from mineral printing baths layer by layer, using heuristic algorithms as blueprints. Those blueprints were extracted from the minds of Marker patients such as Isaac Clarke and Nolan Stross through sessions in the Noonlight Diagnostics Machine, which drove a needle through the eye into the brain.
- What did the Site 12 Marker cause?
- Its signal leaked through its containment shell and spread Marker Dementia across Titan Station, then triggered a full Necromorph outbreak in 2511. The Marker drew the Necromorphs toward it to begin a Convergence Event, which Isaac Clarke ultimately refused and destroyed.
