By Joe Garratt

Franco Delille was an engineer and Unitologist on Titan Station, the Sprawl, one of the first survivors of the Necromorph outbreak there and a man sent under covert orders to free Isaac Clarke from the station's asylum. He reached the man he knew only as Target zero, but he was killed and reborn as a Necromorph at the very moment Isaac woke.

The covert mission#

Franco was specifically assigned by Daina Le Guin, under covert orders, to free Isaac Clarke from the asylum of the Titan Memorial Medical Center. In the logs he kept of his progress he referred to Isaac only as Target zero, and recorded his difficulty reaching the man because of the outbreak and because of his companion. Although he was actively serving a central goal of the Church of Unitology, Franco appeared unaware of the existence of the Necromorphs and of the Church's plan to overrun the Sprawl with them, and he seemed to be looking for a way to be rid of his companion without killing her.

The outbreak on the Sprawl#

Before the outbreak began, Franco was ordered by his superior, Weaver, to head to the CEC Facility to repair a malfunctioning door. He was joined by CPD Officer Sarah Andarsyn, his girlfriend, who volunteered to help, and the two set out on a series of repair tasks. After fixing a manufacturing sky panel outside the station, they were told by Weaver to stay on active duty because of news of an unspecified outbreak that might call for their skills. Before they left for the tram station, Franco received an encoded message from an unknown sender and lied to Andarsyn, telling her it was a wrong number.

While they waited at the tram station, a panicked crowd flooded in, driven by a group of humanoid creatures. Andarsyn tried to shoot the creatures but was knocked over by the crowd before defending herself with a Plasma Cutter. As more Necromorphs arrived, Franco ordered the civilians and Andarsyn aboard the tram, and they escaped. Weaver then contacted Franco with more on the spreading outbreak and directed him to restore the lighting in one sector to keep the station's security intact, while Andarsyn wanted instead to help her former partner with a hostage situation elsewhere.

The death of Sarah Andarsyn#

The paths through the crisis took Franco and Andarsyn in different directions, some leading them through the vents to the Titan Station Church of Unitology, where Franco repaired the Church's security shields and terminals, others toward a hostage rescue or a quarantine lockdown of the lower levels. In every recorded turn of his journey, the outcome was the same: Andarsyn died, whether by Franco's own hand to preserve the secrecy of his mission, in an ambush by the Pack, or from suffocation when her suit ruptured during a spacewalk to the station's inner rim.

Death and transformation#

Reaching the Psych Ward at last, Franco dwelt on the people he had lost along the way before releasing Isaac Clarke from his cell. As Isaac regained consciousness, Franco reported to Daina Le Guin that he had located their target. Aware of the danger they were in, he tried to warn Isaac, but before he could finish he was impaled through the chest and forehead by an Infector, which quickly transformed him into a Slasher. Isaac knocked the infected Franco down and fled the hospital under Daina's guidance.
