Lee Moldaver: the Flame Mother of the Fallout TV Series
Lee Moldaver is the woman who raids Vault 33 and kidnaps Hank MacLean in Fallout season 1. She was a cold fusion scientist before the war, called Miss Williams, and by 2296 she leads the NCR's survivors in Los Angeles. Here is her story and what the show does and doesn't say.
Lee Moldaver is the woman behind the raid on Vault 33 that opens the Fallout TV series, and the leader of the survivors of the New California Republic in Los Angeles. Before the war she was a scientist working on cold fusion, and she has spent two centuries trying to get it back from Vault-Tec. Sarita Choudhury plays her. (Fallout, "The End"; Fallout, "The Radio"; Fallout, "The Beginning")
Who is Moldaver?#
By 2296 she's famous across the wasteland. When Lucy asks after her in Filly, the trader Ma June says everyone knows who Moldaver is, and Lucy guesses she's a woman in her 50s. Ma June, paid to get the Enclave defector Siggi Wilzig across the wasteland, names her client as Lee Moldaver. The bounty hunters who dig up the Ghoul call her a witch, and a farmer calls her the "madwoman in the hills". (Fallout, "The End"; Fallout, "The Target"; Fallout, "The Radio")
Her people are what's left of the NCR. Ma June later describes them as folks from the NCR who weren't in town when Shady Sands blew up. The Ghoul hears talk of a woman "name of Moldaver" whom people call the Flame Mother, and in Vault 4 refugees from the city chant to the Flame Mother, promising to bring Shady Sands back and that blood must spill to do it. (Fallout, "The Trap"; Fallout, "The Wrangler")
Moldaver before the war#
In flashbacks she leads a radical meeting in 2077 Los Angeles, warning that the promised "better future" is "a cliff's edge". Cooper Howard, brought along by a fellow actor, calls it horseshit and tries to leave. She stops him by saying she knows his wife Barb Howard, and a side of her he doesn't. (Fallout, "The Radio")
Her story is cold fusion. She says she was on the verge of infinite energy when Vault-Tec bought every company she'd worked for, and that her research company was acquired by Barb's division. Vault-Tec, she argues, bought the means to end America's resource war and put it on the shelf because it didn't fit the business model. She gives Cooper a listening device. When he calls her a communist, she says it's a dirty word for people who aren't insane. (Fallout, "The Radio")
Cooper plants the bug, hears Barb's pitch to other company heads, and goes back to her. In season 2 she tells him Barb is going to Las Vegas to sell cold fusion to Robert House, who she says is building a private missile system. Later she leaves him a gun in a payphone coin return and asks him to kill House. He refuses to kill anyone but agrees to get the cold fusion back. (Fallout, "The Beginning"; Fallout, "The Innovator"; Fallout, "The Wrangler")
What is she called before the war?#
On screen she is only ever addressed as Miss Williams: Cooper says "I have my principles, Miss Williams". Cast lists give her full name as Kate Williams, but no one says "Kate" in the dialogue. Nor does the show ever say how she became Lee Moldaver, or how she lived to 2296 without becoming a ghoul. (Fallout, "The Radio"; Fallout, "The Innovator")
The link between the two is made through the Ghoul. In "The Trap" he sees a picture of Moldaver on a wall and says that's not how he remembers her, and the episode then cuts to Miss Williams greeting Cooper with "Mr. Howard? I'm a big fan." (Fallout, "The Trap")
The raid on Vault 33#
Moldaver gets into Vault 32 with Rose MacLean's Pip-Boy and introduces herself to Hank MacLean as its new overseer, after the death of an Overseer Jackson. At the wedding of Lucy and Monty her people turn out to be raiders. She corners Hank and offers him "a choice. Them or her." Hank saves Lucy and is taken. She tells Lucy she is taking him to the real world, and that Lucy looks like her mother. (Fallout, "The End"; Fallout, "The Ghouls")
Griffith Observatory and her death#
At the observatory she keeps a feral ghoul chained beside her. When Lucy arrives with Wilzig's head, Moldaver tells her the truth. Hank has "been around for a very long time", working for an organisation that thought it had all the answers. Rose found out people lived on the surface, fled with her children to Shady Sands, and when she wouldn't go home, Hank took the children and burned the city. "That's how Vault-Tec deals with competition," Moldaver says. The ghoul is Rose. (Fallout, "The Beginning")
She needs a Vault-Tec code because, she explains, Vault-Tec made her research proprietary. She wants clean water, medicine and power, "but for everyone". Lucy makes Hank give the code. Then the Brotherhood of Steel attacks and Moldaver goes out to fight. (Fallout, "The Beginning")
Wounded, she makes it back to the reactor and switches it on, lighting up Los Angeles. She sits beside Rose and tells her they did it. Her last words are to Maximus, asking what his Brotherhood would do with infinite power, and that maybe he can stop them. Dane finds him beside her body and hails him as the knight who killed their leader. (Fallout, "The Beginning")
What happened to the cold fusion?#
Season 2 explains how the device left Vault-Tec's hands. Cooper took the diode from Hank in Las Vegas and gave it to the President, and House later tells him that this put it into the Enclave's possession. That is why, two centuries later, it comes out of an Enclave scientist's head. (Fallout, "The Target"; Fallout, "The Strip")
The show leaves the nature of her bond with Rose open. She keeps her close, calls her clever and kind, and dies holding her hand. (Fallout, "The Beginning")
