Fallout TV Series Explained: Seasons, Story and How It Fits the Games
A guide to the Prime Video Fallout series: both seasons and every episode, the story of Lucy, Maximus and the Ghoul from Vault 33 to New Vegas, the Shady Sands timeline debate, how the show fits after the games in 2296, and what is confirmed about season 3.
Fallout is a Prime Video series made by Kilter Films with Bethesda Game Studios, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner as showrunners. It tells a new story set in 2296, 219 years after the Great War and after every game. Two seasons have aired, season 3 is in production, and this guide covers all 16 episodes so far, with full spoilers. (Fallout, "The End"; Fallout season 3 announcement)

Season 1: Vault 33 to Los Angeles#
Lucy grew up in Vault 33, one of three linked vaults under Los Angeles. She believed the surface was a dead place, waiting to be reclaimed. Her wedding to a man from Vault 32 was a trap: the guests were raiders led by Lee Moldaver, and they killed many dwellers and took her father, the Overseer. Lucy went up alone to bring him back. (Fallout, "The End")
On the surface, three hunts met. Maximus, a bullied squire in the Brotherhood of Steel, was sent after a fugitive scientist. The Ghoul, a pre-war actor turned bounty hunter who had survived two centuries as a ghoul, was hired for the same job. The scientist, Siggi Wilzig, had fled the Enclave with something hidden in his body. Before he died he asked Lucy to take his head, and everyone, Moldaver included, wanted it. (Fallout, "The Target"; Fallout, "The Head")
Lucy learned the wasteland's rules the hard way. She was traded to organ harvesters by the Ghoul, escaped, and kept refusing to become like him. With Maximus she found the ruins of Shady Sands, once capital of the New California Republic, and Vault 4, which had opened its doors to refugees from the city and kept the remains of old human experiments on a locked level. (Fallout, "The Ghouls"; Fallout, "The Past"; Fallout, "The Trap")
Down in the vaults, Norm uncovered the bigger secret. Vault 32's people were already dead, the overseers of 32 and 33 had all come from Vault 31, and Vault 31 was full of frozen Vault-Tec managers, woken one at a time to run the other two vaults. The plan was for Vault-Tec's people to inherit the surface. (Fallout, "The Past"; Fallout, "The Beginning")
Flashbacks gave the Ghoul's side. Cooper Howard was a film star and the face of Vault-Tec's adverts. His wife, Barb, was a Vault-Tec executive. Moldaver, then known to Cooper as Miss Williams, warned him the company wanted the war, and Cooper overheard enough to believe it. (Fallout, "The Head"; Fallout, "The Trap"; Fallout, "The Radio"; Fallout, "The Beginning")
At the Griffith Observatory, where Moldaver's NCR survivors held out, it all came together. Lucy learned her mother, Rose, had fled Vault 33 for Shady Sands, and that Hank had destroyed the city to punish her and wipe out a rival to Vault-Tec's plans. Rose was now a feral ghoul, and Lucy killed her. Moldaver used Wilzig's head and Hank's codes to start a cold fusion reactor that lit up Los Angeles, then died. Maximus was hailed as a hero by the Brotherhood. Hank escaped in power armour, Norm was left trapped in Vault 31, and Lucy set off after her father with the Ghoul and Dogmeat. The last shot is New Vegas. (Fallout, "The Beginning")
Season 2: New Vegas#
Season 2 picks up soon after, in the Mojave. The Legion's founder, Caesar, was dead, and his heirs had split the Legion into two camps fighting over who would succeed him. The NCR was down to a last holdout in the Mojave. Maximus's Brotherhood chapter had moved into Area 51 with the cold fusion device, and its Elder, Quintus, was rallying the local chapters against the stronger Commonwealth chapter when the Commonwealth's envoy, Xander Harkness, turned up. (Fallout, "The Golden Rule"; Fallout, "The Profligate")
The season answered how Shady Sands died. A caravan trader walked into the city repeating a line about patrolling the Mojave, a line every New Vegas player knows from NCR troopers, with a control chip in his neck and a nuclear bomb on his cart. Hank was controlling him. Maximus's father found the chip and the bomb but couldn't disarm it, and he and his wife hid their son in a refrigerator before the blast. (Fallout, "The Golden Rule"; Fallout: New Vegas)
In the past, the season followed the chips back to Robert House. Barb went to Las Vegas to meet him, and Cooper, Barb and a young Hank later brought the cold fusion device to the Lucky 38. Cooper and Barb then took the device back from Hank and handed it to the President, who turned out to be tied to the Enclave. Cooper took the blame and was arrested. (Fallout, "The Innovator"; Fallout, "The Wrangler"; Fallout, "The Other Player"; Fallout, "The Handoff"; Fallout, "The Strip")
In 2296, Lucy and the Ghoul reached a New Vegas taken over by deathclaws. At a secret Vault-Tec facility, Hank was kidnapping wastelanders and brainwashing them to build more chips, with the system run by the preserved head of a pre-war congresswoman, Diane Welch. Lucy shut it down, then put a chip in her father, who set it off and lost his memory. House had already hinted at his Enclave ties, calling him an acolyte. (Fallout, "The Other Player"; Fallout, "The Handoff"; Fallout, "The Strip")
The finale set up the next season. The Lacerta Legate claimed the title of Caesar, reunited the Legion and marched on New Vegas. With House's help, the Ghoul reached his family's cryo pods, found them empty, and found a clue pointing to Colorado. Norm survived an attack at Vault-Tec's old headquarters that killed the executives holding him, and a post-credits scene showed the Brotherhood recovering plans for Liberty Prime. (Fallout, "The Strip")
The Shady Sands timeline debate#
The biggest argument about the show is a date. In "The Trap", Lucy sees a classroom timeline in Vault 4: Shady Sands founded in 2142, the NCR in 2189, the NCR's peak in 2241, and "the fall of Shady Sands" in 2277 next to a drawing of a mushroom cloud. Lucy remembers it as the year her mother died, a story she tells in "The Ghouls". (Fallout, "The Trap"; Fallout, "The Ghouls")
Many viewers took that to mean the bomb fell in 2277, four years before Fallout: New Vegas. That would break the game, where the NCR is at the height of its power in the Mojave in 2281. Fans called it a retcon. (Fallout, "The Trap"; Fallout: New Vegas)
Todd Howard answered it in an April 2024 interview with IGN. He said everything in the earlier games, New Vegas included, still happened, and that the bomb fell "just after the events of New Vegas". On that reading, 2277 marks when the fall began, with Rose's flight from Vault 33 and Hank's grudge, not the explosion. (Todd Howard on the Fallout timeline)
Season 2 backed him up without putting a year on screen. The bomb arrives with a chipped caravan driver repeating an NCR trooper's line from the Mojave, which points to the years after New Vegas. Fans working from the characters' ages in the published pilot script put it at around 2283, but the show itself has not given a date. (Fallout, "The Golden Rule"; Fallout: New Vegas; Todd Howard on the Fallout timeline)
How the show fits the games#
The series is the latest point in the Fallout timeline: nine years after Fallout 4 and 15 after New Vegas. It doesn't retell any game, but it builds on them. The Brotherhood, the Enclave, the NCR, Caesar's Legion, Mr. House, the Great Khans and the vaults all come from the games, and season 2 sends Lucy to Freeside and the Strip. (Fallout, "The End"; Fallout, "The Innovator"; Fallout: New Vegas)
The show doesn't pick an ending for New Vegas. Caesar is dead by 2296 and the Strip belongs to deathclaws, but the show doesn't say who won at Hoover Dam in 2281. (Fallout, "The Profligate"; Fallout, "The Demon in the Snow")
The link runs the other way too. The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, appears in Fallout 76's Burning Springs update as a bounty hunter in Ohio, nearly two centuries before the show. Season 2's envoy from the Commonwealth and its Liberty Prime tease point back to Fallout 4. (Fallout 76; Fallout 4; Fallout, "The Golden Rule")

Season 3: what's confirmed#
Amazon renewed Fallout for a third season on 12 May 2025, months before season 2 aired. Filming started in Los Angeles in June 2026, with Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and Kyle MacLachlan returning, and Aaron Paul, Emily Mortimer, Manny Jacinto and Thomasin McKenzie joining. As of October 2026, Amazon has not given a release date. (Fallout season 3 announcement)
The story is still under wraps. After the finale, Jonathan Nolan told Collider the next stop was "not necessarily Colorado", and Todd Howard said "I love giant robots", a nod to the Liberty Prime tease. The finale left a new Caesar marching on New Vegas, Hank without his memory, and the Ghoul still looking for Barb and Janey. (Jonathan Nolan and Todd Howard on season 3; Fallout, "The Strip")

Frequently asked questions
- How many seasons of Fallout are there?
- Two seasons have aired, with eight episodes each. Season 1 came out all at once on 10 April 2024, and season 2 ran weekly from 16 December 2025 to 3 February 2026. Season 3 is confirmed and began filming in June 2026.
- When is Fallout season 3 coming out?
- As of October 2026 there is no release date. Amazon renewed the show in May 2025, filming started in Los Angeles in June 2026, and Amazon says only that season 3 will premiere on Prime Video.
- Is the Fallout TV series canon?
- Yes. Bethesda Game Studios produces the show with Kilter Films, and Todd Howard has said everything in the earlier games, including New Vegas, still happened. The show is set in 2296, after every game.
- Does the Fallout show retcon New Vegas?
- No, according to Todd Howard. A classroom timeline in season 1 dates "the fall of Shady Sands" to 2277, but Howard said the bomb fell just after New Vegas (2281), and season 2 shows the bombing without contradicting the game.
- Who is the Ghoul in Fallout?
- The Ghoul is Cooper Howard, a film cowboy and Vault-Tec spokesman before the war, who survived the bombs as a ghoul and has spent over 200 years as a bounty hunter. Walton Goggins plays him, and he also appears in Fallout 76.
- Do I need to play Fallout to watch the show?
- No. The show has new characters and explains what you need. Knowing Fallout: New Vegas helps with season 2, which brings back Mr. House, Caesar's Legion and the NCR.
