The results explained#
The Brotherhood of Steel#
The Brotherhood of Steel started when Captain Roger Maxson found scientists at Mariposa Military Base testing FEV on military prisoners, and declared his unit's secession from the United States days before the bombs fell. (Fallout) Its mission is to recover and protect technology, with knights and paladins doing the fighting and scribes studying what they find. (Fallout; Fallout 76) In Fallout 4, Elder Arthur Maxson brings the order to the Commonwealth to wipe out the Institute. (Fallout 4)
The New California Republic#
The NCR began as Shady Sands, a farming village built by people from Vault 15. (Fallout) By 2241 it's the capital of a republic led by President Tandi, with an elected council, a professional army and Rangers. (Fallout 2) In 2281 it holds Hoover Dam against Caesar's Legion, bigger and richer than ever, but stretched thin across the Mojave. (Fallout: New Vegas)
Caesar's Legion#
Caesar's Legion was founded by Edward Sallow, a Followers of the Apocalypse scholar captured by an Arizona tribe in 2246, who taught his captors modern war and took the name Caesar. (Fallout: New Vegas) Every conquered tribe loses its name and customs, its young men are trained as legionaries, and the rest are enslaved or killed. (Fallout: New Vegas) Legionaries are banned from using chems, even stimpaks. (Fallout: New Vegas)
The Enclave#
The Enclave was an invitation-only network of presidents, Joint Chiefs, scientists, senators and industrialists who prepared shelters for themselves before the war. (Fallout 76; Fallout 3) In 2242 it tried to release a modified FEV to kill every "mutated" human, and the Chosen One blew up its oil rig. (Fallout 2) The survivors regrouped under President John Henry Eden, who was beaten by the Brotherhood after trying to poison the Capital Wasteland's water. (Fallout 3)
The Institute#
The Institute grew from the scientists and students sheltering under the Commonwealth Institute of Technology when the bombs fell, and sealed itself off from the surface, reachable only by teleporter. (Fallout 4) It spent two centuries building synths, and kidnapped baby Shaun from Vault 111 to make the third generation, the ones nobody can tell from humans. (Fallout 4) Shaun grew up to run it as Father. (Fallout 4)
The Railroad#
The Railroad helps synths escape from the Institute and hides them, believing any synth that thinks and feels like a person deserves to be free. (Fallout 4) It works as a strict network of agents, safehouses and sympathisers who use code names and chalk railsigns. (Fallout 4) In 2287 it's led by Desdemona from catacombs under the Old North Church. (Fallout 4)
The Minutemen#
The Minutemen are a volunteer militia that takes its name from the American Revolution and promises to protect people at a minute's notice. (Fallout 4) They lost their headquarters at the Castle to a mirelurk queen in 2240 and fell apart after the betrayal at Quincy. (Fallout 4) Preston Garvey leads the last survivors to Concord, where the Sole Survivor can save them and rebuild the militia as their General. (Fallout 4)
