The Alchemist's Ring was a green ring that held the trapped soul of the dwarven alchemist Andvari, who had sealed himself within it to escape the Soul Eater that hunted him in the Volunder Mines. Recovered by Kratos and Atreus at the urging of Brok, the ring still spoke with the voice of the dwarf imprisoned inside it.
The alchemist's debt#
The dwarf Brok spoke of an old friend, the alchemist Andvari, who owed him a debt and whom he had not seen in some time. Hoping to settle the matter, Brok sent Kratos and Atreus into the Volunder Mines to find him. When they searched, however, they found only Andvari's green ring, and a Soul Eater stalking the depths. They took the ring to be all that remained of the alchemist, recovered it, and returned it to Brok.
A soul within the ring#
Knowing Andvari's great skill with soul magic, Brok grew to suspect that the alchemist had not simply perished. He came to believe that before the Soul Eater could take him, Andvari had locked his own soul within the ring to protect it. To prove it, Brok had Atreus speak to the ring. Atreus protested that one could not speak to a ring, but when he did the ring itself answered him, confirming that the alchemist's soul still lived inside.
A disputed fate#
With the truth revealed, Brok offered to melt down Andvari's soul and forge it into a reward for Kratos and Atreus. Atreus was disgusted by the idea and argued that Andvari might yet prove useful as he was, and so persuaded Kratos to keep the ring unchanged. The trapped soul fell silent thereafter, seeming to make peace with its strange form. In later years Atreus told his father and Mimir that he had given the ring to Sindri, who was said to have lost it, though whether Sindri truly lost it or chose to melt it down was never known.
