Konunsgard

the cursed stronghold of King Motsognir

Konunsgard was a region of Midgard once ruled by the dwarven king Motsognir, who built a great stronghold there in pursuit of a legendary armor. His obsession destroyed his people and himself, leaving the land overrun by the vengeful dead.

By Joe Garratt

Konunsgard was one of the regions of Midgard, and one of the two lands once ruled by the dwarven king Motsognir, the other being Veithurgard. According to Mimir, it had been a beautiful land at its peak, until the king's obsession with a legendary armor turned it into a place of slaughter and curses. Kratos could reach it only after obtaining an entry stone from the smiths Brok and Sindri.

A kingdom of the dwarves#

Konunsgard had once been a beautiful land at the height of its rule under Motsognir, the dwarven king. By Mimir's account, all of that changed when the king became consumed by his desire for the Dvegraedikr, a dwarven armor of legend. He ordered a great stronghold raised in the region, a work that took many winters to complete. To guard the land he captured the dragon Reginn and set him as the region's head sentry, though maintaining the shrines that bound the dragon proved dangerous, for Reginn would loose his lightning breath to pass the time.

The grand ceremony#

When his stronghold was finished at last, Motsognir invited all who lived in Konunsgard to come to it for a grand ceremony. Within the throne room he is said to have had them all killed, for their screams were one of the ingredients required to forge the Dvegraedikr. The act cost him his own life, as the very people he had murdered rose again as Hel-Walkers and turned on him, wounding him gravely out of vengeance.

The king's last realization#

Fleeing into a secret passage hidden behind his throne, Motsognir succumbed to the wounds the dead had dealt him. In his final moments he understood the cruel completion of his work, that his own death and sacrifice were the last ingredient the legendary armor demanded. With his disappearance, Konunsgard fell to ruin, and his second land of Veithurgard was likewise abandoned. The region remained sealed until Kratos obtained an entry stone from Brok and Sindri to pass within.
