Wulver

the wolfen beasts of Vanaheim and Jotunheim

The Wulvers were ferocious wolfen beasts of the Nine Realms, immense in strength and speed, standing upright like men yet wolves in form. Cunning and savage, they hunted in packs across Vanaheim and Jotunheim.

By Joe Garratt

The Wulvers were ferocious wolfen beasts of the Norse realms, creatures of immense strength and speed that stood upright like men yet kept the form of wolves. Cunning, savage, and dense of fur, they were among the harder foes Kratos and Atreus met on their journey.

Beasts of fur and claw#

The Wulvers were powerful, formidable beasts resembling werewolves, possessed of immense strength and speed. They were lanky and lumbering in build, so that one might expect them to be slow, yet they proved far quicker than expected. Their thick fur, heavy teeth, and a nasty set of claws made them a tough fight, and their dense coats made them hard to bring down. Mimir, who recalled creatures of similar build from the isles of his childhood, noted that those beasts had been relatively friendly, often sharing fish and other goods with the locals, a far cry from these vicious creatures. In their later years the Wulvers were said to stand upright like men and to be smarter, stronger, and faster than before, reminding Atreus of the Berserkers his father had fought, though wolves rather than bears.

The fierce and the berserk#

Beyond the standard kind there was a fiercer breed, the Fierce Wulver, tougher, stronger, more aggressive, and smarter, with attacks too powerful to turn aside. What set the fiercer apart from the common Wulver was never made plain; Mimir could only wonder whether it came down to ancestry or to some law of survival of the fiercest. Any Wulver could grow more dangerous in the midst of a fight, extending its claws to deliver heavier blows, and when grievously wounded it entered a berserk state in which additional protrusions sprouted from its forelimbs, its fury and its strength rising sharply.

Where they roamed#

In the later days of Kratos and Atreus' journey, the Wulvers were found living in Vanaheim and Jotunheim. The packs of Vanaheim were led by a powerful alpha-wulver named Blatonn. Though they hunted as savage beasts, they were creatures of real cunning, the fiercer among them counted among the most dangerous of all the things that prowled the realms.
