HUNK: Umbrella's Grim Reaper and the 4th Survivor of Resident Evil 2
HUNK is the gas-masked Umbrella soldier who led the raid on William Birkin's lab, set off the Raccoon City outbreak without meaning to, and walked out alive when his whole team died. Here is what the games actually say about him, from The 4th Survivor to the rumours around Requiem.
HUNK is the codename of the Umbrella special forces leader whose team raided William Birkin's lab in September 1998, the mission that ended up setting off the Raccoon City outbreak. He's the only one who walked away from it. Fans know him from The 4th Survivor, the bonus scenario in Resident Evil 2 where he fights his way out of the dying city. (Resident Evil 2)
Who is HUNK?#
Almost nothing about HUNK's life is on record. He works for the Umbrella Security Service, the company's private army, and leads its Alpha Team. Resident Evil 3's file on him calls him the Grim Reaper, or Mr. Death, because he kept surviving operations that wiped out everyone else involved. He wears a gas mask, and his face is never shown. (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)
The raid on Birkin's lab (Resident Evil 2, 1998)#
In September 1998, Umbrella learned that Birkin planned to sell his G-Virus to the US military. HUNK's team was sent into the lab beneath Raccoon City to take it. On 22 September they cornered Birkin and told him to come with them and bring the samples. He refused and reached for a gun, and one of HUNK's men opened fire. HUNK took the case of G and t samples and the team headed into the sewers. (Resident Evil 2)
Birkin wasn't dead. He injected himself with the last sample of G and came after them as a monster. He slaughtered the team, the case of samples was spilled in the attack, t-Virus vials broke, and the rats that fed on the spill carried the virus into the water supply. HUNK survived. (Resident Evil 2)
The 4th Survivor#
A week later, with the city overrun, the helicopter pilot Nighthawk arranged to pick him up. In the 1998 game HUNK starts in the sewers with a sample still on him and has to reach the police station's helipad, past zombies, Lickers and a Tyrant. He makes it and flies out. (Resident Evil 2)
The Umbrella Chronicles retells the run as a short mission of its own, ending with his line "Death cannot die." (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
How the remake changes HUNK's story#
The 2019 remake keeps the raid and the sewer massacre and shows them on recovered footage. The 4th Survivor now ends at the police station's front gate instead of the roof. Held up by the Tyrant and the crowds, HUNK tells Nighthawk to leave without him, a rare moment of putting someone else first. Nighthawk waits anyway, and says he wanted to meet the Grim Reaper. (Resident Evil 2)
Why HUNK matters to the story#
HUNK's raid is where the Raccoon City disaster starts. Without it, Birkin doesn't inject himself, the t-Virus doesn't reach the water, and the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 never happen. It's also the reason Sherry Birkin ends up hunted by her own father. HUNK himself never learns or cares what he started. His job was to bring back a sample, and he did. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)
After Raccoon City#
The main story never picks HUNK up again in detail. He turns up instead as a playable extra in score modes, including The Mercenaries in Resident Evil 4 and Raid Mode in Resident Evil: Revelations 2, always in the same mask. (Resident Evil 4; Resident Evil: Revelations 2)
Is HUNK in Resident Evil Requiem?#
Not officially. Resident Evil Requiem has a masked commander leading The Connections' soldiers in the ARK facility, whom Leon fights before reaching Elpis. Plenty of players have linked him to HUNK, but the game calls him only the Commander and never confirms who he is. (Resident Evil Requiem)
Frequently asked questions
- Who is HUNK in Resident Evil?
- HUNK is the codename of the leader of an Umbrella Security Service team sent to steal the G-Virus from William Birkin in 1998. He is the only member of his team to survive, and the star of The 4th Survivor, the bonus mode in Resident Evil 2 and its 2019 remake.
- Why is HUNK called the Grim Reaper?
- Because he kept coming back from missions that killed everyone else on his team. Resident Evil 3's file on him says the nickname came from that record of being the sole survivor.
- What is HUNK's real name?
- It has never been given. HUNK is a codename, and the games never show his face under the gas mask.
- Did HUNK cause the Raccoon City outbreak?
- Not on purpose, but his mission set it off. His team shot William Birkin to take the G-Virus, Birkin injected himself and attacked them in the sewers, and the broken t-Virus samples from that fight reached the city's water through the rats.
- Is HUNK in Resident Evil Requiem?
- Capcom has not confirmed it. Requiem has a masked commander leading The Connections' soldiers whom many players link to HUNK, but the game never names him as HUNK.
