Resident Evil 2 Story Explained: Plot, Endings and the 2019 Remake
The full story of Resident Evil 2, from Leon and Claire's first night in a dying Raccoon City to the train out of Umbrella's secret laboratory, with the A and B scenarios, Mr. X, the Birkins, Ada Wong, every ending and what the 2019 remake changes.
Resident Evil 2 came out on the PlayStation in January 1998, and Capcom remade it from the ground up in January 2019. It's set two months after the first game, on 29 and 30 September 1998, when the t-Virus has escaped into Raccoon City itself. A rookie police officer, Leon S. Kennedy, and a college student looking for her brother, Claire Redfield, arrive on the worst night in the city's history. It's also the story behind the 2026 film: Resident Evil (2026) is set during these same days. This page covers the whole plot of both versions, both scenarios and every ending, so it has full spoilers. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 2 (2019); Resident Evil (2026))
Before the story begins#
The S.T.A.R.S. survivors of the Mansion Incident came back to Raccoon City in July knowing Umbrella was making bioweapons. Nobody listened. The police chief was in Umbrella's pocket, and the city ran on Umbrella money. Chris Redfield eventually left to chase the company to its European headquarters. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil)
Meanwhile, under the city, Dr. William Birkin had finished his life's work, the G-Virus, a step beyond the t-Virus. Umbrella learned he planned to defect with it and sent an armed team to take it. They shot him in his laboratory and took his samples. Dying, Birkin injected himself with the one sample he had left, and it brought him back as something else. In the struggle the t-Virus got loose in the sewers, and within days the city was falling. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 2 (2019))
By the night the game begins, most of Raccoon City's people were dead or worse. Jill Valentine was somewhere in the city trying to get out, which is the story of Resident Evil 3. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)
How the two scenarios work#
Resident Evil 2 tells one night from two angles. Finish one character's story (the "A" scenario) and you can play the other's (the "B" scenario), which picks up the same events from the other side, with different routes, bosses and scenes. There are two pairings: Leon A with Claire B, and Claire A with Leon B. Some events happen differently depending on the pairing, and the full ending only comes at the end of the B scenario. Neither pairing is officially the true one, and later games pick details from both. The 2019 remake keeps the idea, calling the second story the "2nd Run". (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 2 (2019))
Arrival in Raccoon City#
On the evening of 29 September, Leon drove into Raccoon City for his first shift and found bodies in the street and the dead getting up. Claire, riding in on her motorbike to find Chris, ran into a diner full of zombies. The two met as the dead closed in, grabbed a police car and headed for the police station. A zombie in the back seat attacked them, then a burning tanker truck ploughed into the car, and they were split up, each heading for the station alone. (Resident Evil 2)
The station, an old art museum the police had converted, was already lost. Inside, a badly wounded Lieutenant Marvin Branagh told them what had happened. He'd been bitten. Leon and Claire, each on their own, set out to search for survivors and a way out. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil Outbreak File #2)
The police station#
Claire found a little girl running from the dead through the station's vents. Her name was Sherry Birkin, and she said a monster was chasing her. Claire also found Chief Brian Irons, standing over the body of the mayor's daughter, and a rambling, armed Irons told her what Sherry was: William Birkin's daughter. He also admitted Umbrella had paid him to bury evidence of its experiments and keep the G-Virus quiet. He never got further than that. The monster chasing Sherry was her father. It caught Irons in a hidden room under the station and planted an embryo in him, which burst out of his chest in front of Claire. (Resident Evil 2)
Leon met a woman in the parking garage. Ada Wong said she was looking for her boyfriend, John, an Umbrella researcher who had disappeared. In the cells they found Ben Bertolucci, a reporter who had been digging into Irons and Umbrella and who refused to leave the safety of his cell. Ben paid for it. Before he died, he told Leon the chief had been working with Umbrella all along, and then a G-embryo Birkin had planted in him burst out of his chest in the cell. (Resident Evil 2)
The station wasn't only full of zombies. Lickers, skinless crawling things with long tongues, hunted its corridors. In the B scenario there was worse: Umbrella had dropped a Tyrant, a towering bioweapon in a long coat known as Mr. X, into the city to recover the G-Virus. It followed the B character through the building and wouldn't stay down. (Resident Evil 2)
The sewers and the Birkins#
Both survivors went down into the sewers under the station, Leon with Ada and Claire with Sherry. Sherry fell down a shaft and they were separated, and while they were apart Birkin found her and planted his embryo in her. He'd been calling her name for a reason. Only blood family could carry his offspring and survive, so the creature he'd become kept coming back for his daughter. (Resident Evil 2)
That's when they met Annette Birkin, William's wife and fellow researcher. She held a gun on whoever she met, convinced they were Umbrella spies after her husband's work, and explained what had happened to him. She was right about one person. In the sewers she shot at Ada, and Leon threw himself in front of her and took the bullet. Ada went after Annette and knocked her over a railing into the sewage. (Resident Evil 2)
In Leon's story a huge mutated alligator came up out of the water. Then the survivors made their way down into Umbrella's secret laboratory beneath the city, with Birkin attacking them on the way, more mutated each time. Sherry began to sicken. (Resident Evil 2)
The laboratory#
The two pairings play out differently here. (Resident Evil 2)
Claire A and Leon B. Annette confronted Leon and told him Ada was a spy who'd only dated John to get at Umbrella's secrets, and that she was here to steal the G-Virus. Then she ran into Claire, who told her Sherry had been implanted and the embryo would soon hatch. Annette ran to her husband to stop him, and he cut her down. Dying, she told Claire how to make a vaccine for Sherry and asked her to tell her daughter she loved her. Mr. X cornered Leon, and Ada saved him. The Tyrant threw her into the machinery, and Ada, apparently dying, told Leon she loved him and kissed him. He had to leave her behind. (Resident Evil 2)
Leon A and Claire B. This time Leon ended up holding a G-Virus sample. Ada caught up with him and held a gun on him, demanding he hand it over. Annette shot Ada, and she fell down a shaft into the depths of the laboratory. Claire, meanwhile, still had to find a way to save Sherry before the embryo inside her matured. (Resident Evil 2)
The ending explained#
The laboratory began to self-destruct. In the full ending, the B character reached the train platform first and found Mr. X waiting, now mutated into a faster, clawed form. A rocket launcher was thrown down from above. It was Ada, alive after all. With Mr. X destroyed, the B character, Sherry and the A character boarded the escape train. Birkin came after them one last time, now barely a body at all, a mass of flesh and teeth. They set off the train's self-destruct and got clear on foot, the blast killed him, and the three of them walked out into the sunrise. Claire cured Sherry with the vaccine on the way. (Resident Evil 2)
So what does it mean? Some of it is settled. William and Annette Birkin are dead, Sherry is cured and orphaned, and Umbrella has lost Raccoon City and the G-Virus scientist it tried to rob. Ada is the big open question. She survives, but who she was really working for, and what she took away, is left for later games. The bonus mission "The 4th Survivor" shows HUNK, leader of the Umbrella team that shot Birkin, alive and carrying a G-Virus sample to an extraction helicopter, so Umbrella got the virus too. (Resident Evil 2)
As for the heroes, Claire set off after Chris, which leads to Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Leon kept Sherry with him. Later games fill in what came next: the US government took both of them in, Leon became a federal agent by the time of Resident Evil 4, and Sherry grew up under government supervision. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica; Resident Evil 4; Resident Evil 6)
How the 2019 remake changes the story#
The 2019 remake tells the same story with the same ending and most of the same beats, but it rewrites a lot of the detail. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- A new opening. Leon and Claire meet at a gas station outside the city, flee in a police car and are separated by a truck crash on the way into town. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- Mr. X hunts both stories. He's no longer a B scenario surprise. He stalks Leon and Claire through the police station in both runs. In Leon's story he returns in the laboratory as the Super Tyrant. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- Ada claims to be FBI. Instead of the missing boyfriend, Ada tells Leon she's a federal agent investigating Umbrella, and that Ben was her contact. Ben dies when Mr. X crushes his skull, not to Birkin. Leon gets shot shielding her, same as before, and their story still ends with her falling, presumed dead, after she demands the G-Virus from him. She still returns to save him from the Super Tyrant. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- Irons gets worse. The remake's Irons is openly monstrous. He grabs Sherry and takes her to the city orphanage, demanding her pendant, and Birkin finds and implants him there. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- Annette changes sides at the end. In the laboratory she turns on her husband to save her daughter and is mortally wounded. She lives just long enough to help save Sherry. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- New faces. The gun shop owner Robert Kendo gets a daughter, Emma, already infected; Leon and Ada watch him put her down. Marvin lives longer, helping the player out of the station, before his bite finally turns him. An officer, Elliot Edward, dies under a shutter at the front door. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
- The ending. The three survivors escape the train and walk out into the daylight, and Leon and Claire swear to bring down Umbrella. (Resident Evil 2 (2019))
Resident Evil 2 and the 2026 film#
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil, released on 18 September 2026, is set in Raccoon City during the outbreak that Resident Evil 2 shows. If you're coming to the series from the film, this is the game to start with: the same city, the same collapse and the same company behind it. Our film explainer, linked above, covers how its story lines up with the games. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 2)
What it sets up#
The outbreak isn't over when the train leaves the tunnel. Resident Evil 3 follows Jill and the Nemesis through the city's last days to the missile strike on 1 October, and Claire's search for Chris carries on in Code: Veronica. For where it all fits, see the Resident Evil timeline and every Resident Evil monster. (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis; Resident Evil Code: Veronica)

Frequently asked questions
- Which is the canon scenario in Resident Evil 2?
- Neither, strictly. Capcom built the 1998 game as two linked scenarios (Leon A with Claire B, or Claire A with Leon B), and later games borrow from both. The 2019 remake works the same way. What every version agrees on is the outcome: Leon, Claire and Sherry escape, Ada survives, and William and Annette Birkin die.
- Does Ada Wong die in Resident Evil 2?
- No. She seems to die, either in Leon's arms or by falling into the depths of the laboratory, but she reappears to throw Leon a rocket launcher for the last fight with Mr. X, and later games confirm she escaped Raccoon City.
- Who is Mr. X?
- A Tyrant, one of Umbrella's mass-produced T-103 bioweapons, dropped into Raccoon City to recover the G-Virus and kill witnesses. In 1998 he only stalks the B scenario; in the 2019 remake he hunts both Leon and Claire through the police station.
- What happens to Sherry Birkin at the end of Resident Evil 2?
- Her father implants her with a G-embryo, but Claire gives her a vaccine made from her mother's instructions, and she survives and leaves the city with Leon and Claire. Later games show that the US government took her into custody afterwards.
- Why does William Birkin become a monster?
- Umbrella sent soldiers to take his G-Virus before he could sell it. They shot him, and dying in his laboratory, he injected himself with the last sample. It saved his life and turned him into the ever-changing creature known as G.
- Is the 2026 Resident Evil film based on Resident Evil 2?
- It takes place during the same outbreak. Zach Cregger's film is set in Raccoon City while the city is falling, the same days in which Resident Evil 2 happens. Our explainer of the film covers how it lines up with the game.
