Resident Evil (2026) Explained: Plot, Ending and How It Connects to the Games

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil follows a medical courier called Bryan through the night Raccoon City falls. Here's the whole plot, what the ending means, which game references are really in it, and where it sits next to Resident Evil 2.

By Joe Garratt

Resident Evil is Zach Cregger's reboot of the film series, released in US cinemas on 18 September 2026. It's set over one night on the snowy mountain roads into Raccoon City and in the city itself, as the outbreak from Resident Evil 2 takes hold, and it follows a new character, a medical courier called Bryan Hodukavich (Austin Abrams), rather than anyone from the games. This page covers the whole film, ending included, so it has full spoilers. (Resident Evil (2026))

The short answers#

Bryan doesn't survive as Bryan. The bite he took halfway through the film wins, and he ends it as a monster rather than a hero. (Resident Evil (2026))

None of the game characters show up. There's no Leon, no Claire, no Jill or Chris. Cregger said plainly that he wasn't going to tell Leon's story, because the games already tell it, and called the film a love letter to the games. (Zach Cregger interview, Inverse)

It's set during the same outbreak as Resident Evil 2, and Umbrella is behind it, but it's not an adaptation and doesn't slot into the game timeline. (Zach Cregger Q&A, PlayStation Blog; Resident Evil (2026))

There's no post-credits scene. (Resident Evil (2026))

Before the story begins#

Bryan is a medical courier whose girlfriend, Michelle, has just found out she's pregnant. She's heard on the phone through much of the film, voiced by Sara Paxton, and the two of them are clearly struggling with the idea of becoming parents. He takes a last-minute job carrying a package up through the snow to Raccoon City General Hospital. He has no idea what's in it, and no idea that the city ahead is already falling. (Resident Evil (2026))

The mountain road and the farmhouse#

Driving through the snow while arguing with Michelle on the phone, Bryan hits a woman on the road. There's no signal, so he tries to drive her to the hospital himself, until Deputy Sheriff Wilson pulls him over, puts the injured woman in his cruiser and tells Bryan to follow. The cruiser soon crashes, killing Wilson. When Bryan tries the cruiser's radio, the woman attacks him, and he shoots her with Wilson's pistol. (Resident Evil (2026))

He walks to a nearby farm, where he kills a mutated dog, then goes into the farmhouse and finds a double-barrelled shotgun. While he's looking for shells, the woman from the road comes back and her infected husband ambushes him. Bryan shoots them both, but headshots don't finish anything in this film. Tentacles burst out of the bodies and fuse the two of them together. (Resident Evil (2026))

The tunnel and the Umbrella escort#

Bryan flees into a tunnel, but an RV blocks the exit. Inside it, an infected little girl mutates and bites him before he kills her. This is the bite that matters: from here on the clock is running. Outside the tunnel the fused couple find him again, now a growing mass of many more bodies. (Resident Evil (2026))

An SUV pulls up and two Umbrella employees drive the creature off with gunfire. Maxine (Kali Reis) is Umbrella's enforcer, and Paul (Paul Walter Hauser) is one of its scientists. On the drive into Raccoon City, Paul tells Bryan what's going on. Umbrella built a serum for the US government that makes living things evolve at speed, and a lab accident with it started the outbreak. The package Bryan has been carrying is a stabiliser, the piece Umbrella's scientists at the hospital need to make a cure and hand it to the National Guard. (Resident Evil (2026))

Neither of them makes it. Once they're in the city, Maxine is killed by a mutant they never properly see, and Paul is absorbed into the fused creature. Bryan is on his own again. (Resident Evil (2026))

Raccoon City and the sewers#

With the creature on his trail, Bryan escapes into Raccoon City's sewers. Down there he meets a bloated creature whose stomach bursts open, releasing a swarm of mutant rats. He shoots them and runs as their remains start merging behind him. Near the hospital, infected people throw themselves off rooftops around him, and he notices their remains don't regenerate. (Resident Evil (2026))

He gets into Raccoon City General through its underground car park. His bite is getting worse, and he records a tearful goodbye message for Michelle. An Umbrella scientist spots him on a security camera and, over the intercom, tells him to take the stairs up to the lab on the top floor. (Resident Evil (2026))

The hospital#

Exhausted, Bryan takes the lift instead. An acid-vomiting infected patient attacks him while the fused creature climbs the shaft after him, and Bryan forces the patient to spray its acid onto the creature, which pulls back wounded. Then he kills the patient. (Resident Evil (2026))

Higher up he crosses a maternity ward overrun with mutated newborns and staff, and they chase him out onto a ruined skybridge, where he barricades the door. The fused creature is climbing towards him. With his last bullet he shoots the barricade, and the mutants pour through and fall onto the creature. All of them crash to the ground and die. (Resident Evil (2026))

Finally he reaches the lab and hands over the package. The Umbrella scientists, among them Carl (Zach Cherry), start making the cure. (Resident Evil (2026))

The ending explained#

The cure is made, but Bryan's body is already turning on him. Mutant limbs burst out of him and start killing and eating the scientists while he begs for the cure. For a while it looks as if somebody might still get it into him. Then Bryan gives in to the infection completely, kills the last scientist and sends the cure falling off the roof. In the final shot Bryan, now fully a monster, roars as National Guard helicopters arrive overhead. (Resident Evil (2026))

It's a deliberately bleak ending. The film spends its running time making you want Bryan to get there, and he does. He finishes the job, and it doesn't save anyone. The cure was in the room, and the thing that lost it was the courier who brought it. That's why the virus wins and Raccoon City has to go, which fits what everyone who's played Resident Evil 3 already knows happens next. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)

Cregger has said the ending changed in the edit. In the original version the cure was destroyed almost straight away, and viewers gave up on Bryan at that point. He had shot a moment of the scientist slipping the needle into a pocket because he had a feeling he'd need it, and using it kept the hope of saving Bryan alive to the end. (Zach Cregger interview, TheWrap) He was just as clear that Bryan becoming a monster was never going to change. (Zach Cregger interview, Gizmodo)

Some questions stay open. Nobody explains who sent the helicopters, though in a city run by Umbrella the answer isn't hard to guess. And Bryan isn't killed. What he's become is a question for a sequel, if there is one. (Resident Evil (2026))

Easter eggs and game references#

These are references that are clearly on screen. The film goes for what playing the games feels like rather than names and places, so most of them are about the experience. (Resident Evil (2026))

  • The typewriter. Bryan finds a typewriter in the farmhouse, the games' classic save point. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 2)
  • Green herbs. A green herb, the games' basic healing item, sits in a wrecked car Bryan passes, before he's even been bitten. (Resident Evil (2026))
  • Locks and keys. The farm gate has one of the games' heavy padlocks that can't be shot off, and Bryan tries to ram through it with a truck rather than find the key. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 2)
  • Shotgun shells. The green boxes of shotgun ammo look like the games' ammunition pickups. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 4)
  • Gun upgrades. Bryan goes from a pistol to a shotgun to a machine gun, the way a run through the games builds up. (Resident Evil (2026))
  • The zombie dog. The mutated dog at the farm, its face split open, is a nod to the series' infected dogs. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 2)
  • The acid spitter. The vomiting patient in the hospital lift is a rare ranged enemy of the kind the games throw in. (Resident Evil (2026))
  • The tendrils. The tentacles that burst from the infected and fuse bodies together have a lot of Las Plagas in them. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 4)
  • The final form. Bryan's mutation at the end plays like a game's final boss transformation. (Resident Evil (2026))

How it connects to the games#

The film is set in Raccoon City during the outbreak that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 cover, in late September 1998 in game terms. In the games, that outbreak came from the T-virus spreading out of Umbrella Corporation's labs under the city, and it ended with the city destroyed to wipe the infection out. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)

The film keeps the shape of that. Umbrella made the virus, Umbrella's accident let it out, and Umbrella is trying to clean up after itself. What it changes is the virus. Paul describes it as a government serum that drives living things to evolve fast, and the infected sprout tendrils that fuse bodies together into bigger creatures. That's closer to the G-virus and Las Plagas than to the shambling T-virus zombies of the 1998 game, and the film never clearly says this is the T-virus. (Resident Evil (2026); Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 4)

None of the games' characters cross paths with Bryan. The Raccoon City Police Department where Leon and Claire spent their night is never visited, and the hospital, Raccoon City General, stands in for it as the building Bryan has to climb. Cregger has said he wrote the film to take place during the Raccoon City outbreak of Resident Evil 2 while telling a story the games hadn't, so treat it as one more story from the same terrible night rather than a missing chapter of the game canon. For the games' version of that night, see the Resident Evil 2 story. (Zach Cregger Q&A, PlayStation Blog; Resident Evil 2)

It also has nothing to do with the earlier films. It isn't a sequel to the Milla Jovovich series or to Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the 2021 reboot that put the game characters on screen. (Resident Evil (2026))

Where it fits#

If the film sent you looking for the original night, start with the Resident Evil 2 story and the Resident Evil 3 story, then the full Resident Evil timeline. For every other screen version, our guide to the Resident Evil movies in order covers the live-action films, the CG films that are part of the game canon, and the Netflix series. Frequently asked questions

Does Bryan die at the end of Resident Evil (2026)?
Not exactly. The bite he took earlier finishes its work just as the cure is made. He mutates, kills the scientists, and the last shot shows him, fully transformed, roaring as National Guard helicopters arrive. Whatever is left standing, it isn't Bryan any more.
Are Leon, Claire or any game characters in the 2026 Resident Evil film?
No. None of the game heroes appear. Cregger said he wasn't going to tell Leon's story because the games already tell it, so the film follows a new character, Bryan Hodukavich, through the same outbreak.
Is Resident Evil (2026) connected to Resident Evil 2?
It's set during the Raccoon City outbreak that Resident Evil 2 covers, and Cregger has said he wrote it to happen at the same time as that game. It isn't an adaptation of the game's plot and it isn't part of Capcom's game canon.
Is there a post-credits scene in Resident Evil (2026)?
No. There's no mid-credits or post-credits scene. The film ends on Bryan's roar.
What happens to the cure in Resident Evil (2026)?
The scientists finish it, but as Bryan kills the last of them the cure goes over the edge of the hospital roof. Nobody gets it into him in time.
Who directed the new Resident Evil movie?
Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian and Weapons. He co-wrote it with Shay Hatten.
