Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Explained: Plot and Ending

The last Milla Jovovich film sends Alice back to the Hive with 48 hours to release a cure, and finally reveals who she really is. Here's the full plot, the ending explained and how it rewrites the games' version of Umbrella.

By Joe Garratt

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the 2016 film that ended Paul W. S. Anderson's live-action series, written and directed by Anderson. It came out in Japan on 23 December 2016, then in the US on 27 January 2017 and the UK on 3 February 2017. It follows Resident Evil: Retribution, takes Alice back to the Hive where the series began, and closes out the story of the six Alice films with the answer to who she really is. Full spoilers below. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Before the story begins#

Retribution ended with Albert Wesker giving Alice her powers back at the White House, the last human stronghold, as an army of monsters closed in. Wesker said the Red Queen, the computer that now ran Umbrella, was trying to wipe out humanity. (Resident Evil: Retribution)

The main cast, from the Wikipedia credits: Milla Jovovich as Alice and as the older Alicia Marcus, Iain Glen as Dr Isaacs, Ali Larter as Claire Redfield, Shawn Roberts as Wesker, Eoin Macken as Doc, Ruby Rose as Abigail, William Levy as Christian, Ever Anderson as the Red Queen and the young Alicia, and Mark Simpson as Dr James Marcus. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

How Umbrella began#

The film opens with the story of Umbrella's founding. Dr James Marcus, the company's founder, has a daughter, Alicia, who is dying of progeria, the disease that makes children age too fast. Desperate, he takes an untested project, the T-virus, created by his colleague Dr Charles Ashford, and uses it on Alicia and others. When a child treated with it turns into a zombie, Marcus shuts the project down, destroys the research and bans Ashford from going near it again. That leaves Ashford with no way to save his own daughter. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Marcus's partner, Dr Alexander Isaacs, has Wesker murder Marcus. Isaacs adopts Alicia and takes over Umbrella. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

48 hours#

In the present, Alice wakes in the ruins of the White House. Wesker betrayed the survivors and the last stand failed. The Red Queen appears to her and makes an offer. Umbrella has an airborne antivirus, hidden in the Hive under Raccoon City, that can kill the T-virus in everything it reaches. Umbrella is holding it back until the world's last humans are dead, which the Red Queen says will take 48 hours. Alice's body carries the virus, so she expects the cure to kill her too, but she goes anyway. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

On the road she's captured by Isaacs, and learns that the Isaacs she killed in Extinction was a clone. She escapes his convoy and reaches what's left of Raccoon City, where she finds Claire, who survived the attack on Arcadia, with a group of survivors: Doc, Abigail, Christian, Cobalt and Razor. Doc and Claire are a couple. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter; Resident Evil: Extinction)

Isaacs's convoy follows her, driving a huge horde of the dead ahead of it. Alice and the survivors fight it off and free Isaacs's human prisoners, but Cobalt is killed. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Back in the Hive#

The group enters the Hive. Wesker controls it from a central hub and sets mutated dogs on them, killing Christian and one of the freed prisoners. The Red Queen explains herself to Alice. Her programming won't let her harm an Umbrella employee, but she's also bound to value human life, and the two rules now clash. So she's using Alice to act against Umbrella for her. She warns that someone in the group is a traitor. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

She also shows them a video of Isaacs setting out Umbrella's plan to its board. Releasing the T-virus will wipe out humanity, and the rich and powerful, Umbrella's own leaders among them, will wait out the end of the world frozen in the Hive and rebuild afterwards. Only one board member objects: an old woman. More traps kill Abigail and Razor. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

The ending explained#

Alice and Doc plant bombs taken from equipment left by the first commando team, then face the real Isaacs, who has been upgraded with technology of his own. Doc turns out to be Umbrella's spy, and Wesker captures Claire. A cryogenic pod opens and out steps an old woman: Alicia Marcus, Umbrella's co-owner, who opposed the plan and was outvoted. Isaacs then tells Alice the truth. She's a clone of Alicia, and he intends to kill them both and take Umbrella for himself. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Alicia fires Wesker. As he's no longer an Umbrella employee, the Red Queen can stop protecting him, and she crushes his leg in a security door. Doc tries to shoot Alice and Claire kills him. Alice hands the trapped Wesker the dead man's switch for the bombs, and she and Claire go after Isaacs, while Alicia uploads her childhood memories to the Red Queen. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Isaacs gets the better of both women until Alice sets off a grenade in his pocket. She reaches the surface with the antivirus, but Isaacs, still alive, catches her. Before he can kill her, the Isaacs clone from the convoy arrives, convinced he's the real one, and kills him, then is torn apart by the dead. Alice releases the antivirus. It's airborne, and every infected thing around her drops. She collapses. Below, Wesker lets go of the switch, and the bombs destroy him, Alicia, the Hive and Umbrella's frozen elite. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Claire wakes Alice. She's alive, because the antivirus kills only the T-virus, not healthy cells. The Red Queen, who was modelled on Alicia as a child, uploads Alicia's childhood memories into Alice, giving her a past she never had. The antivirus will take years to spread around the world, and until it does, Alice rides off to keep fighting the dead. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

What the reveal means for the whole series: Alice was never just an Umbrella security guard who got caught up in its experiments. She was Umbrella's creation from the beginning, made from the founder's daughter, and the computer that tried to kill her in the first film was modelled on the same girl. The ending gives her what the series kept taking away: her own memories and a body that no longer carries the virus. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter; Resident Evil (2002 film))

The film doesn't tie everything off. Jill, Leon, Ada, Chris and Becky from Retribution don't appear and aren't explained, and the last scene leaves the world still overrun while the cure spreads. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter; Resident Evil: Retribution)

How it ends the series#

Nothing follows it. The Final Chapter was the last of Anderson's films. Constantin Film started over with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021, and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil followed in 2026. Neither has anything to do with Alice. (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City; Resident Evil (2026 film))

How it differs from the games#

The Final Chapter makes its biggest changes to Umbrella's history, the part of the games the earlier films mostly left alone. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

  • Different founders. In the games, Umbrella was founded by Oswell E. Spencer, Edward Ashford and James Marcus. Spencer isn't in the films, and Isaacs, Marcus's partner here, was made for them. (Resident Evil 0; Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)
  • Marcus makes his own virus. In Resident Evil 0, Marcus is the scientist behind the T-virus. The film gives the invention to Charles Ashford, the scientist from Apocalypse, and turns Marcus into a father trying to save his daughter. (Resident Evil 0; Resident Evil: Apocalypse; Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)
  • Wesker still kills Marcus. In the games, Spencer has Marcus murdered and Wesker and William Birkin are sent for his research. The film keeps Wesker as the killer but has Isaacs give the order. (Resident Evil 0; Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)
  • Wesker dies differently. Resident Evil 5 ends with Chris and Sheva killing him in a volcano. In the film he dies in the Hive, holding the switch. (Resident Evil 5; Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)
  • No cure for the world. In the games the T-virus never takes over the planet. The cures are vaccines made for one person at a time, such as the one Carlos finds to save Jill in Resident Evil 3. (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis; Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Where it fits#

This is the end of Alice's story and of Anderson's continuity. For every Resident Evil film and series in release order, see every Resident Evil movie in order. For the games' own history of Umbrella, from its founding to its fall, see the Resident Evil timeline. (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter)

Frequently asked questions

How does Resident Evil: The Final Chapter end?
Alice gets the airborne antivirus out of the Hive and releases it, killing every infected creature around her. Wesker, Alicia Marcus, the Hive and Umbrella's frozen elite are destroyed by the bombs Alice planted, and Isaacs is killed by his own clone. Alice survives, the Red Queen gives her Alicia's childhood memories, and she rides off to keep fighting while the cure spreads.
Who is Alice really in The Final Chapter?
A clone of Alicia Marcus, the daughter of Umbrella's founder James Marcus. Isaacs tells her she was made from Alicia, and the Red Queen, who was modelled on Alicia as a child, gives Alice Alicia's childhood memories at the end.
Why does Alice survive the antivirus?
The antivirus kills the T-virus, not the person carrying it. It destroys the virus inside Alice but leaves her healthy cells alone, so she wakes up alive.
How does Wesker die in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter?
Alicia fires him from Umbrella, so the Red Queen no longer has to protect him, and she crushes his leg in a security door. Alice leaves him holding the dead man's switch for the bombs. When he drops it, he dies in the explosion along with the Hive.
Is there another Milla Jovovich Resident Evil movie after The Final Chapter?
No. The Final Chapter ended Anderson's series. The films started over with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021 and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil in 2026, neither connected to Alice's story.
