Resident Evil: Extinction Explained: Plot and Ending

The third Milla Jovovich film jumps to a world turned to desert, puts Alice in Claire Redfield's convoy and ends with an army of Alice clones. Here's the full plot, what the clone ending means and how it changes the games.

By Joe Garratt

Resident Evil: Extinction is the 2007 third film in Paul W. S. Anderson's live-action series, directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by Anderson. It came out in the US on 21 September 2007 and in the UK on 12 October 2007. It picks up years after Resident Evil: Apocalypse, when the T-virus has spread around the world, and it's the film where the Alice films stop being about one city and become about the end of everything. Full spoilers below. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Before the story begins#

At the end of Apocalypse, Umbrella destroyed Raccoon City with a nuclear bomb. Alice died in the crash that followed, woke in an Umbrella lab with psychic powers and escaped with Jill Valentine, Carlos Olivera, L.J. and Angela Ashford. Dr Isaacs, a senior Umbrella scientist, let her go on purpose. (Resident Evil: Apocalypse)

The main cast, from the Wikipedia credits: Milla Jovovich as Alice, Ali Larter as Claire Redfield, Oded Fehr as Carlos, Iain Glen as Dr Isaacs, Ashanti as the convoy's nurse Betty, Mike Epps as L.J., Spencer Locke as K-Mart, Jason O'Mara as Albert Wesker and Madeline Carroll as the White Queen. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Project Alice#

The film opens with Alice waking in a mansion. She wanders its halls, gets past several security traps and dies when a mine hidden in the floor goes off. Her body is dumped into a pit full of identical bodies. This Alice was a clone, one of many in Umbrella's Project Alice. (Resident Evil: Extinction; Resident Evil (2002 film))

The real Alice is somewhere else. The T-virus has spread across the world since Raccoon City and killed off far more than people: the land itself has dried out, and the United States is a desert. Alice rides through it alone. After fighting off a gang of marauders, she finds a notebook that mentions a place in Alaska that might be free of infection. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Claire's convoy#

A convoy of survivors is crossing the same desert, looking for fuel and food. It's led by Claire Redfield, and two of the people who escaped with Alice, Carlos and L.J., ride with it. While they search a motel, a zombie bites L.J., and he hides the wound from the others. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

The next morning a flock of infected crows attacks the convoy and nearly overwhelms it. Alice arrives and destroys the remaining birds with her mind, then passes out. When she comes round she meets Claire, shows her the notebook and persuades her to take the convoy to Alaska. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Using her powers has a cost. Umbrella picks up the energy pattern and works out where she is. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Isaacs and the attack#

In an underground Umbrella facility in the desert, Isaacs has been using the Alice clones to search for a cure, and experimenting on the dead. His attempts to tame the infected have made a new breed of zombie. Wesker, Umbrella's chairman, is keeping an eye on him. His security chief, Captain Slater, reports that Isaacs keeps breaking the rules, and Wesker tells Slater to kill him if he disobeys again. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Isaacs disobeys anyway. Desperate to get the real Alice back, he sends his new zombies against the convoy. Most of the survivors are killed. L.J. finally turns and bites Carlos, and Carlos kills him. Umbrella tries to switch Alice off remotely, freezing her in place, but she breaks free of its control and fights on. She finds Isaacs at the scene, and he's bitten as he escapes by helicopter. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Alice and K-Mart, a girl from the convoy, use Isaacs's own computer to trace the helicopter, and it leads them to the underground base. Back there, Isaacs is injecting himself with huge doses of antivirus to fight the bite. It doesn't cure him. He mutates into a Tyrant. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Carlos's sacrifice#

A horde of zombies blocks the entrance to the base. Carlos, dying from his bite, says his goodbyes, drives a tanker truck packed with dynamite into the horde and blows it up, killing himself and clearing the way. Alice and Claire get everyone else onto a helicopter for Alaska. Alice stays. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

Inside the base, a hologram of the White Queen, the Red Queen's sister program, talks to her. The White Queen tells Alice that her blood could cure the T-virus, defends what the Red Queen did in the Hive, and shows her what happened to Isaacs. Deeper down, one of the Alice clones wakes in front of Alice and seems to die of shock. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

The ending explained#

Alice finds the mutated Isaacs and leads him into the copy of the Hive's laser corridor from the first film. The lasers come on and cut him apart, but Alice is trapped in the corridor too. Just before the grid reaches her, the system shuts off. The clone she thought had died is alive, and she's switched it off to save her. (Resident Evil: Extinction; Resident Evil (2002 film))

In Tokyo, Wesker tells Umbrella's leaders that the North American facility has been lost. Then Alice appears in the meeting and warns him that she's coming for him, and she won't be alone. Behind her, in the base, are rows of her clones. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

The ending turns the opening on its head. The film begins with Umbrella killing Alice clones for research and ends with Alice taking those clones as her own army. It also settles what Isaacs wanted at the end of Apocalypse: he let Alice go so he could keep studying her, and the cure he chased was in her blood all along. (Resident Evil: Extinction; Resident Evil: Apocalypse)

Some things are left hanging. The film doesn't show whether Alaska really is safe, or what Umbrella's board does about Alice's threat. (Resident Evil: Extinction)

How it connects to Afterlife#

Resident Evil: Afterlife opens with Alice and her clones attacking Umbrella's Tokyo headquarters. Wesker escapes and injects the real Alice with a serum that takes her powers away. When she reaches Alaska, the safe zone, called Arcadia, is just a field of empty planes. Claire's convoy was captured there, and Claire herself has lost her memory. (Resident Evil: Afterlife)

How it differs from the games#

Extinction moves furthest from the games of the first three films. In the games the T-virus outbreaks are local disasters. The films let it end civilisation. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil: Extinction)

  • Claire is someone else. In Resident Evil 2 she's a student who comes to Raccoon City looking for her brother Chris, and in Code: Veronica she's still searching for him. The film makes her the leader of a convoy of survivors. (Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil Code: Veronica; Resident Evil: Extinction)
  • Wesker runs Umbrella. In the games he's a S.T.A.R.S. captain secretly working for Umbrella, who later turns against it. Here he sits at the head of its board. (Resident Evil; Resident Evil: Extinction)
  • The Tyrant is a man. Umbrella's Tyrants in the games are bred as weapons. The film's Tyrant is Isaacs, mutated by an antivirus overdose. (Resident Evil; Resident Evil: Extinction)
  • The crows are borrowed. Infected crows attack in the first game's mansion. The film turns them into a vast flock. (Resident Evil; Resident Evil: Extinction)

Where it fits#

Extinction is the middle of the series and the point where Alice's story becomes a war with Umbrella's leadership. For every film in release order, see every Resident Evil movie in order. For the games' own version of what happened after Raccoon City, see the Resident Evil timeline. (Resident Evil: Extinction)
