Tyrant (Resident Evil): Mr. X, the T-103 and Every T-Series Model
The Tyrant is Umbrella's man-made super soldier, a human body rebuilt by the t-Virus to take orders and kill. This guide covers the T-002 from the mansion, the T-103 that fans call Mr. X, the T-078 on Rockfort Island and the rest of the line.
A Tyrant is a bio-organic weapon made by the Umbrella Corporation from a human being infected with the t-Virus, built to keep enough intelligence to follow orders while gaining huge size and strength. The most famous is the T-103 in Resident Evil 2, the trench-coated stalker that fans call Mr. X. Others include the T-002 from the first game, the T-078 on Rockfort Island and Nemesis. (Resident Evil (1996); Resident Evil 2 (1998))
What is a Tyrant in Resident Evil?#
A Tyrant is Umbrella's answer to a problem with its own virus. The t-Virus turns most victims into zombies, and zombies can't take orders. Umbrella wanted a weapon that could be pointed at a target and trusted to deal with it, so its scientists searched for people whose genes let them survive infection with most of their mind intact. Those people were extremely rare, which held the project back for years. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
The result is a towering humanoid, usually grey-skinned and well over two metres tall, that can smash through walls, shrug off gunfire and carry out instructions. Umbrella's files describe two broad kinds. Combat models are naked and deformed, with a huge claw on one arm. Infiltration models like the T-103 look closer to a very large man and wear heavy clothing so they can pass at a distance. Where they sit among Umbrella's other creations is covered in every Resident Evil monster. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles; Resident Evil 2 (2019))
Tyrants are built with a limiter. When one takes enough damage, or the limiter is removed, the body starts mutating out of control into what the games call a Super Tyrant: bigger, faster, with long claws, and no longer interested in orders. (Resident Evil 2 (1998); Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
The T-002: the Tyrant in the Spencer Mansion#
The T-002 was the first Tyrant to work. Umbrella developed it at the Arklay Laboratory beneath the Spencer Mansion, and it was kept in a tank there when the lab fell to an outbreak in 1998. It has an enlarged heart exposed on its chest and a long claw on its left hand. (Resident Evil (1996); Resident Evil (2002))
In July 1998 Albert Wesker led the surviving members of S.T.A.R.S. down into the lab and released the Tyrant to test it against them. It impaled him almost at once. Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine brought it down, and it came back once more on the helipad as the lab's self-destruct counted down, where a rocket launcher dropped from the escape helicopter finished it. (Resident Evil (1996); Resident Evil (2002))
Resident Evil 0 later added the T-001 Proto-Tyrant, an earlier and less stable attempt that Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen fight before the mansion events. (Resident Evil 0)
Mr. X: the T-103 in Resident Evil 2#
The T-103 is the Tyrant most people mean when they search for one. After the T-002, Umbrella cloned and modified the design into a mass-production line meant to follow more complex orders. During the Raccoon City outbreak in September 1998, Umbrella airlifted several into the city. (Resident Evil 2 (1998); Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
One of them was dropped at the Raccoon City Police Department with orders to recover the G-virus sample that Sherry Birkin carries in her pendant and to kill anyone left alive in the building. It hunts Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield through the station, the streets and the lab below the city, walking steadily after them and breaking through walls when doors are in the way. (Resident Evil 2 (1998); Resident Evil 2 (2019))
In the 1998 game the Tyrant only stalks the player in the second scenario. Badly injured in the lab, it loses its coat, mutates into a Super Tyrant and is killed by a rocket launcher thrown down by Ada Wong. The 2019 remake turned it into the game's main threat: it follows the player around the police station in real time, reacts to noise and wears a fedora that can be shot off. It still mutates into a Super Tyrant in the lab and still dies to a rocket. (Resident Evil 2 (1998); Resident Evil 2 (2019))
The name Mr. X never appears in Resident Evil 2. It came from early licensed material, such as a strategy guide and a Toy Biz action figure released in 1998, and spread among fans. Capcom has since embraced it: Resident Evil: Resistance lets one of its masterminds summon a T-103, and Capcom promoted that as playing as Mr. X. (Resident Evil: Resistance)
The T-078 and other T-103 variants#
The T-103 design was the base for most later Tyrants. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
- T-078: a mass-produced T-103 shipped to Rockfort Island with its power limiter disabled, which lets it mutate bony claws. Alfred Ashford sets it on Claire and Steve Burnside as they escape, and it later climbs aboard their escaping plane before Claire throws it out with a cargo crate. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
- Nemesis-T Type: a T-103 with a parasite implanted to take over its brain, sent to hunt S.T.A.R.S. in Raccoon City. It has its own page: Nemesis. (Resident Evil 3: Nemesis)
- Tyrant R: an experimental T-103 with two claws and a remote-controlled bomb in its chest, activated in Raccoon City and destroyed by Ada Wong. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
- Ivan: two human-looking T-103 bodyguards who served Umbrella executive Sergei Vladimir until they were destroyed when Umbrella fell in 2003. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
Other Tyrants, from Thanatos to the T-501#
Umbrella ran several side projects alongside the T-103. Thanatos, built by an Umbrella researcher at Raccoon University, appears in Resident Evil Outbreak and returns in Outbreak File #2. The Hypnos-T Type hunts Ark Thompson on Sheena Island in Resident Evil Survivor. The T-A.L.O.S., a Tyrant fitted with armour and heavy weapons, was Umbrella's last stand at its Caucasus base in 2003, where Chris and Jill destroy it. (Resident Evil Outbreak; Resident Evil Outbreak File #2; Resident Evil Survivor; Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
The Tyrant outlived Umbrella. In Resident Evil Requiem, set in 2026, a crime syndicate called The Connections sells a new model, the T-501, which closely copies the T-103, coat and all. One guards a member of the group in the ruins of Raccoon City and pursues Leon through the remains of the police station before he kills it. (Resident Evil Requiem)
Frequently asked questions
- Who is Mr. X in Resident Evil?
- Mr. X is the fan name for the T-103 Tyrant that Umbrella drops into Raccoon City in Resident Evil 2. It stalks Leon and Claire through the police station in a long coat and, in the 2019 remake, a fedora. The games themselves call it a Tyrant.
- Why is the Tyrant called Mr. X?
- The name came from early licensed material such as strategy guides and toys, not from Resident Evil 2 itself. It stuck with fans, and Capcom has since embraced it.
- What is the first Tyrant in Resident Evil?
- The T-002 Tyrant, the final boss of the original Resident Evil, is the first one players met. Resident Evil 0 later showed an earlier, failed prototype, the T-001 Proto-Tyrant.
- Is Nemesis a Tyrant?
- Yes. Nemesis is a T-103 Tyrant body with a parasite called NE-α implanted to take over its brain, which made it smarter and much more persistent.
- Why does the Tyrant wear a coat?
- The T-103's coat is a power limiter. It holds back runaway mutation, and when the coat is destroyed the Tyrant turns into a larger, clawed Super Tyrant.
