Rebecca Chambers: the S.T.A.R.S. Medic Who Survived Resident Evil 0 and the Mansion

Rebecca Chambers was the youngest member of S.T.A.R.S., a rookie medic who lived through the train and training-school disaster of Resident Evil 0 and then the Spencer Mansion. Years later she turned up again as a virologist in the CG films. Here is her whole story in order.

By Joe Garratt

Rebecca Chambers is the medic of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team, an 18-year-old chemistry graduate on her first mission when the team's helicopter came down in the Arklay Mountains in July 1998. She's the lead of Resident Evil 0, Chris Redfield's partner for part of the original Resident Evil, and much later a vaccine scientist in the CG films. (Resident Evil 0; Resident Evil)

Who is Rebecca Chambers?#

Rebecca was a prodigy. She finished a chemistry degree at 18 and was picked for S.T.A.R.S., the special tactics unit of the Raccoon City Police Department, because of what she knew about medicine and chemicals. She joined Bravo Team as its field medic, the youngest person in the unit, and she was still very new when the Arklay mission began. Capcom's official Resident Evil 0 profile gives her age as 18. (Resident Evil; Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles; biohazard 0 official site)

The Ecliptic Express and the training school (Resident Evil 0)#

On 23 July 1998, Bravo Team's helicopter made an emergency landing in the forest. The team found an overturned military police truck that had been carrying Billy Coen, a former Marine lieutenant sentenced to death for murder, and split up to find him. Rebecca instead found the Ecliptic Express, an Umbrella train stopped in the woods, its passengers turned into zombies by swarms of leeches. (Resident Evil 0)

Billy was on board. They didn't trust each other, but they needed each other to get off the train, and they worked together after that. The train ran out of control and crashed into the station under an abandoned Umbrella executive training school. Inside, Billy told her the story behind his conviction: his unit had been sent to wipe out a village of civilians, and he'd been blamed when he refused to go along with it. (Resident Evil 0)

At the end they met James Marcus, or something wearing his young face. Marcus had founded the training school and created the t-Virus; Umbrella had him murdered ten years earlier, and his leeches had brought him back. He mutated into a giant leech creature, and they killed him by exposing him to sunlight and shooting him with a magnum. The facility blew up behind them. Rebecca took Billy's dog tags and told him she'd report him as dead. (Resident Evil 0)

The Spencer Mansion (Resident Evil)#

Rebecca reached the Spencer Mansion and kept going. In the Chris Redfield scenario of Resident Evil she's a playable partner. She helps Chris treat Richard Aiken, a Bravo Team member poisoned by a giant snake, and she plays piano and mixes chemicals when the mansion needs it. (Resident Evil)

The mansion was a trap set by Albert Wesker, who had led S.T.A.R.S. into it to test Umbrella's bioweapons against them. Rebecca was the only member of Bravo Team to make it out. She escaped by helicopter with Chris, Jill and Barry after the Tyrant was destroyed. (Resident Evil)

After 1998#

Back in Raccoon City she wrote up the incident, reporting Billy as dead. That report shows up as a file in some versions of Resident Evil 2, but Rebecca herself doesn't appear in the city when it falls to the outbreak in September 1998. (Resident Evil 2)

She went back to university and became a scientist. When she reappears it's as an expert in viruses and vaccines who works alongside Chris and the BSAA. (Resident Evil: Vendetta)

Vendetta (2014)#

In Resident Evil: Vendetta, Rebecca is working on a cure for the A-Virus made by the arms dealer Glenn Arias. When his people release the virus in her lab, she makes a vaccine to protect herself and is rescued by Chris. She goes with him to recruit Leon, gets kidnapped by Arias as part of his plan to restage his own wedding, and is injected with a strain the vaccine can't stop. Chris and Leon get her out, cure her with the antidote Arias kept, and the team spreads it over New York. (Resident Evil: Vendetta)

Death Island (2015)#

A year later, in Resident Evil: Death Island, Rebecca analyses a run of killings in San Francisco and links the victims to Alcatraz. When Chris, Jill, Claire and Leon go missing there, she follows with a vaccine, cures them, and helps Claire turn the villain's virus-carrying drones against the monster he has become. The film ends with all five of them together. (Resident Evil: Death Island)

How Rebecca has changed between versions#

The 2002 remake of Resident Evil keeps her role in Chris's scenario. The Umbrella Chronicles retells both Resident Evil 0 and the mansion as on-rails missions. Neither version changes what happened to her. (Resident Evil; Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)
