Piers Nivans: the BSAA Sniper Who Died for Chris in Resident Evil 6
Piers Nivans is the BSAA sniper Chris Redfield recruited, trusted and lost. He dragged Chris out of an amnesiac exile in Resident Evil 6, then injected himself with the C-Virus to save him. Here is who he was, what happened in Edonia and China, and how he died.
Piers Nivans is the BSAA sniper who fights beside Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 6. He's the one who finds Chris drinking himself into oblivion with no memory, brings him back, and keeps him on mission when Chris wants revenge. He dies saving Chris from the bioweapon Haos, after injecting himself with the C-Virus. (Resident Evil 6)
Who is Piers Nivans?#
Every man in Piers's family had served in the military, and he grew up wanting to follow his father. He did well at an elite military academy, stood out as a sniper and went into the Army's special forces. There he started to wonder what he was actually fighting for. (Resident Evil 6)
In 2010 Chris Redfield, impressed by his shooting, asked him to join the BSAA. Piers liked how Chris ran a team: like a family, not a set of expendable soldiers. Chris, for his part, knew he couldn't stay in the field forever, and saw people like Piers as the future of the organisation. Piers respected Chris more than anyone, and Chris trusted him completely. (Resident Evil 6)
Before Resident Evil 6: the Marhawa Desire#
Piers first appeared in the manga The Marhawa Desire, set in 2012. He travels with Chris to Marhawa, an isolated boarding school in the forests of South-East Asia, where a hooded woman's new virus has caused an outbreak. (Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire)
Edonia, December 2012#
The BSAA sent Chris's Alpha Team into Edonia, where rebels were being supplied with bioweapons. Piers was part of it. On the way the team met Sherry Birkin and the mercenary Jake Muller, and Piers wanted Jake treated as an enemy for fighting with the rebels. Chris let him go. (Resident Evil 6)
At the city hall the team found a prisoner who looked like Ada Wong. As they escorted her out, she set off C-Virus injections among the soldiers. They turned into cocoons and then monsters. Chris took a blow to the head that wiped his memory, and Piers got him out. Then Chris disappeared. (Resident Evil 6)
Bringing Chris back#
Six months later Piers found him in a bar in Eastern Europe, drinking and unable to remember who he was running from. He showed Chris photos of the men they'd lost and brought him back to the BSAA for an operation in Lanshiang, China. (Resident Evil 6)
In Lanshiang Chris's memory returned, and with it a single goal: kill Ada. Men kept dying while he chased her. Piers, who still believed in him, told him straight that a personal vendetta wouldn't get them anywhere. (Resident Evil 6)
The woman turned out to be Carla Radames, a scientist remade in Ada's image. Chris and Piers chased her onto a Neo-Umbrella aircraft carrier, where she was cut down, but they couldn't stop her C-Virus missile. It burst over Lanshiang and filled the city with zombies. (Resident Evil 6)
How Piers dies#
Leon asked Chris to rescue Sherry and Jake from a facility on the seabed. In the lift on the way down, Chris told Piers he'd been thinking of stepping back and wanted Piers to lead. Piers didn't feel ready. (Resident Evil 6)
They found Jake and Sherry, and then Carla's last creation, Haos, broke out of its cocoon. Chris sent the others away. In the fight the facility began to break apart, Haos caught Chris, and debris crushed Piers's right arm. With no other way to save his captain, Piers picked up a vial of the C-Virus and injected himself. (Resident Evil 6)
The virus rebuilt his ruined arm into a weapon that fired electricity. With it he and Chris brought Haos down. On the way to the escape pods Chris kept telling him he'd be fine. Piers knew he wouldn't. He pushed Chris into a pod alone, launched it, and stayed behind. When Haos came after the pod, one last blast from Piers destroyed it, just before the facility went. (Resident Evil 6)
Why Piers matters to Chris#
Chris had already lost Jill in 2006, or thought he had, and his whole team in Edonia. Piers is the loss that turns him around. He'd talked about stepping back; instead he went back to the BSAA with a new squad, and the game frames Piers's sacrifice as what gave him his reason to fight again. (Resident Evil 6)
