Oswell E. Spencer: the Founder of Umbrella and the Man Behind Resident Evil

Lord Oswell E. Spencer was the British aristocrat who co-founded Umbrella to chase his dream of a new, evolved humanity. He built the mansion from the first game, ordered murders to keep control, and died at Wesker's hand in 2006. Requiem added a last twist. Here is his story.

By Joe Garratt

Oswell E. Spencer is the British lord who co-founded the Umbrella Corporation, owner of the Spencer Mansion and the man whose dream of an evolved humanity set off almost everything in the early games. For years he was only a name on files. Resident Evil 5 finally showed him, minutes before his death, and Requiem gave him a final say. (Resident Evil; Resident Evil 5; Resident Evil Requiem)

Who is Oswell E. Spencer?#

Spencer came from a wealthy, titled European family and grew up with money, art and a sense that the world needed fixing by people like him. As a young man he went walking alone in Eastern Europe, got lost in the snow and collapsed. Miranda, the priestess of a remote mountain village, saved him. (Resident Evil Village; Resident Evil 5)

He stayed and learned from her. The Mold she worshipped could absorb and copy living things, and it showed him that a person could be changed at the biological level. They split over what to do with it. Miranda only wanted her dead daughter back. Spencer wanted to change the whole human race, and the Mold didn't spread fast enough for that. A letter he wrote her, found in Village, explains all this. (Resident Evil Village)

Founding Umbrella#

Back home he formed a circle with James Marcus and Edward Ashford. In West Africa they found what they were looking for: the Progenitor Virus, carried by a flower. To pay for the research without drawing attention, they set up a pharmaceutical company, Umbrella, in 1968. A letter from Spencer, found in Village, ties the name to a symbol in Miranda's cave. (Resident Evil 5; Resident Evil Village)

He also built a mansion in the Arklay Mountains outside Raccoon City, designed by the architect George Trevor, with a laboratory hidden beneath it. To keep that secret, Spencer had Trevor's wife and daughter Lisa seized as test subjects in 1967, and George died trying to escape the house he'd built. (Resident Evil)

Holding on to power#

Spencer didn't trust his partners. Ashford died early. Marcus kept working on his own and became a rival, so in 1988 Spencer sent Umbrella soldiers to kill him, with Marcus's former students William Birkin and Albert Wesker there to take his research. (Resident Evil 0; Wesker's Report II)

Wesker was more than a student. Spencer ran a programme that gathered gifted children, raised and educated them, and later exposed them to a Progenitor strain to create obedient superhumans. It carried Wesker's name, and Wesker was one of its results. (Resident Evil 5)

Under Spencer, Umbrella also became a weapons maker, working secretly with the US military. That's where the t-Virus, the Tyrant and the G-Virus came from. (Resident Evil 5; Wesker's Report II)

The fall of Umbrella#

In 1998 the mansion lab was lost, Wesker betrayed the company, and William Birkin's death under Raccoon City released the t-Virus into the city, which the US government destroyed with a missile. Umbrella was buried in investigations and lawsuits, and by the mid-2000s it had collapsed. Spencer was wanted internationally and shut himself away in his family estate in Europe with his bodyguards and his butler. (Resident Evil 5)

How did Spencer die?#

In 2006 Wesker walked into the estate, killed the guards and found Spencer, now frail and in a wheelchair. Spencer told him about the Wesker Project and his plan to remake the world with a new humanity, with himself as its god. Wesker decided Spencer wasn't fit for that role and killed him with a hand through the chest. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine arrived just after, and Jill went missing that night. (Resident Evil 5)

Requiem: Elpis and Grace#

Resident Evil Requiem changes how Spencer ended. A recorded interview with the journalist Alyssa Ashcroft, Grace's mother, shows an old man who called the viruses he'd unleashed his great regret, and who called his last project his hope. (Resident Evil Requiem)

His last project was Elpis, locked away in the ARK facility under Raccoon City's ruins. Shadowy groups assumed it was the ultimate weapon and killed for it. In the ending where Grace releases it in 2026, by answering "hope" to the password question, Elpis turns out to be an antiviral that clears Umbrella's viruses from the body. (Resident Evil Requiem)

That twist doesn't undo the rest. Spencer still built the system that killed Raccoon City. But in that ending, the series' original villain went out trying to clean up after himself. (Resident Evil Requiem)
