Lisa Trevor: the Girl Umbrella Kept Under the Spencer Mansion

Lisa Trevor is the chained, face-wearing figure who stalks the grounds of the Spencer Mansion in the 2002 Resident Evil remake. She was the architect's daughter, kidnapped as a girl and experimented on for thirty years, and her body gave William Birkin the G-Virus. Here is her whole story, from the games to the 2021 film.

By Joe Garratt

Lisa Trevor is the daughter of George Trevor, the architect who designed the Spencer Mansion, and the shackled, near-unkillable figure who hunts Chris and Jill through its grounds in the 2002 remake of Resident Evil. Oswell E. Spencer had her taken as a girl so the secrets of his house would stay buried. She spent the next thirty years as a test subject, and she is the reason the G-Virus exists. (Resident Evil (2002))

Who is Lisa Trevor?#

Lisa was the only child of George and Jessica Trevor. George was a well-known architect, and Spencer hired him to design a house in the Arklay Mountains full of hidden passages and trick locks, with a secret laboratory underneath. George's diary, found in the remake, tells how the family was invited to the finished house in November 1967. Busy with work, he sent Jessica and Lisa on ahead. By the time he arrived, they were gone, and he soon found he couldn't leave either. He died trapped inside the building he had designed. (Resident Evil (2002))

Spencer did this to keep the house's layout secret, and because he wanted human subjects. Notes left in the estate show that Jessica was given a strain called Type A and Lisa a strain called Type B. Jessica's body rejected it, and the researchers disposed of her as a failure. Lisa's body accepted the virus. (Resident Evil (2002))

Thirty years as a test subject#

Lisa's own notes, written in the first days after the injection, are some of the most disturbing files in the series. She misses her mother and keeps asking for her. A woman is sent in to pretend to be Jessica, and Lisa decides the impostor has stolen her mother's face and tries to take it back. From then on she collected faces, stitching them into a mask she wore over her own. (Resident Evil (2002))

She stayed under the estate for decades, chained, and was moved into the Arklay laboratory once it was built. Wesker's Report II says few of the staff knew she existed, and almost nobody knew her name. When William Birkin became chief researcher there, he made heavy use of her, testing new strains on a body that refused to die. (Wesker's Report II)

How Lisa led to the G-Virus#

In the late 1980s Lisa was implanted with an experimental parasite that had killed every other host. Her body absorbed it, and some of her reason came back. Birkin studied her to find out why, found a new mutation in her cells, and called it G. That discovery won him his own laboratory beneath Raccoon City and set up the events of Resident Evil 2. (Wesker's Report II; Resident Evil (2002))

With her strength and some of her mind back, Lisa became a danger to the staff, especially the women. Umbrella ordered her destroyed. The researchers waited three days for her to show any sign of life before they were satisfied she was dead and had her body removed. They were wrong. She recovered and lived on in the forest and the tunnels around the estate. (Wesker's Report II; Resident Evil (2002))

Lisa in 1998: the Mansion Incident#

When the t-Virus broke out in the laboratory in 1998, Lisa was still out there. In the remake she lives in a small cabin in the grounds, with a trapdoor down to the caves where she was first held. She drags heavy shackles from her wrists, her face is hidden under the stitched skin of her victims, and she moans for her mother. Bullets only knock her down for a moment, so Chris and Jill have to outrun her rather than fight her. (Resident Evil (2002))

The last meeting happens at an altar deep in the caves, where a stone coffin holds Jessica Trevor's body. Once the coffin is opened, Lisa finds her mother's skull, holds it, and throws herself into the chasm below. It's one of the few times in the series a monster gets an ending that feels like mercy. (Resident Evil (2002))

The remake doesn't show what happened next. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles does. In its Rebirth chapter, Lisa climbs back out and crosses paths with Albert Wesker, one of the researchers she remembers, as the self-destruct counts down. She chases him through the laboratory and into the mansion, where he leaves her pinned under the fallen chandelier in the main hall. The mansion explodes with her inside. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)

How the remake added Lisa to the story#

Lisa isn't in the 1996 original. Capcom created her for the 2002 GameCube remake along with the rest of the Trevor family's story, the graveyard, the crypt and her cabin. She gave the remake a stalker who couldn't be put down, in the tradition of Mr. X and the Nemesis, and a human cost to the mansion that the original never showed. Later material built on her: Wesker's Report II tied her to the G-Virus, and that link is part of Birkin's backstory in every account since. Lisa Trevor in Welcome to Raccoon City#

The 2021 film, played by Marina Mazepa, changes almost everything about her. Here Lisa is held at the Raccoon City Orphanage, where Umbrella runs experiments on children, and as a girl Claire Redfield befriends her. Years later, when Leon, Claire and Chief Brian Irons reach the abandoned orphanage, a Licker kills Irons and Lisa kills it before it can get Leon. She recognises Claire and gives them the way into the tunnel to Umbrella's lab. The film keeps her look, the chains and the stitched face, but makes her an ally. See Welcome to Raccoon City explained. (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City)
