Alex Wesker: the Overseer of Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Alex Wesker is the other surviving child of Spencer's Wesker Project and the villain of Resident Evil: Revelations 2. Here's how she's connected to Albert, what she wanted with Natalia Korda, how she survived her own suicide and how she finally died.

By Joe Garratt

Alex Wesker is the villain of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, the woman the captives on Sein Island know only as the Overseer. Like Albert Wesker, she was one of the children raised under Oswell E. Spencer's Wesker Project, and by 2011 the two of them were its only survivors. Dying of an illness, she planned to escape death by moving her mind into a child, Natalia Korda. This page spoils both of the game's endings. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Who Alex Wesker is#

Spencer wanted a new, superior humanity with himself as its god. In a memo found on Sein Island, Alex describes how he gathered gifted children from around the world, trained them through brutal tests and injected them with a virus. Most died, one by one, until only she and Albert were left. Another memo, by her aide Stuart, identifies them as specimens 012 and 013. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Stuart also says plainly that Alex wasn't Albert's blood relative, but that the two shared a bond as the last Wesker children. Both worked for Umbrella and both used Spencer's money while pretending to serve him. Alex writes that both of them eventually decided they had no duty to obey the old man at all. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

She turns up much earlier than Revelations 2, though only as a name. A Resident Evil 5 file dated 28 August 1998 reports Albert's death in the Arklay lab accident, notes that the project's success rate has dropped to 18 percent, and recommends drawing new subjects from the failed candidates. It's signed "Alex W." of Umbrella's Information Department. (Resident Evil 5)

Sein Island and t-Phobos#

Alex had money, an Umbrella career and a body that was failing. Her answer, laid out in her notes on the island, was that the body will age no matter what, but the mind can escape by moving into a new vessel. That vessel had to be someone who could overcome fear, and after a transfer it needed six months, protected, for her mind to settle. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Fear was the test because of her virus, t-Phobos, which only activated in a frightened host. Everyone on the island became a subject. The captives wore bracelets that read their fear, and those who broke turned into the Afflicted. Alex watched it all, speaking through the bracelets and quoting Kafka, her favourite writer. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

In 2011 she found her candidates off the island. Neil Fisher, a TerraSave executive who blamed the BSAA for swallowing his old agency, sold her his colleagues in exchange for a sample of Uroboros, the virus Albert had built with Tricell. Her men raided TerraSave's party and took Claire Redfield, Moira Burton and others. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Stuart's memo says Albert's death in 2009 hit her hard and that she ordered the transfer to begin straight away. With him gone, she saw herself as the last of the chosen, and the right to become a god as hers alone. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The tower and the failed suicide#

Natalia, an orphan of the Terragrigia Panic, stood out. A report from Neil to Stuart calls her the most suitable vessel by far, a child incapable of feeling fear after what she'd seen. Alex had her taken, put into a coma and sent down into a protected bunker. Neil got his Uroboros as an injection and became a monster. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

When Claire and Moira reached the top of the tower, Alex talked about Albert, pointed a gun at Claire, then shot herself. The tower began to self-destruct. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

It didn't work. Her own journal, found later, explains: in the instant she pulled the trigger, the thought of vanishing scared her, and the viruses already in her body kept her alive. She woke up mutated and hideous. Worse, she now faced a second Alex about to wake in Natalia's body. She decided the girl was a fake who had to die so she could take the body for herself. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Barry, Natalia and the end#

Six months later Barry Burton came looking for Moira and found Natalia. Alex, hooded and masked, confronted them in the tower and told Barry she had buried Moira, then set her Revenants, Uroboros creatures, on the island. When she finally got her hands on Natalia, she raged that the girl hadn't changed and started to strangle her, then backed off and fled. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

At her hideout she injected herself with Uroboros, telling the absent Albert that she finally understood how he'd felt: simply staying alive wasn't enough, and she wanted to rise above it. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

What happened next depends on the ending. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

  • Good ending. Moira, alive after all, shot Alex before she could kill Natalia. On a cliff edge, a recovered Claire arrived by helicopter. Barry fought on with Claire covering him from the air, and at his call Claire finished Alex with a rocket launcher. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)
  • Bad ending. Moira died in the tower collapse. Alex crushed Natalia until she passed out, and then Natalia woke, cut off Alex's hand and tore out her heart. She told Barry he could call her Alex now. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

What Alex left behind#

Her plan worked at least partly, in both endings. The bad ending says it outright. The good ending's 2013 epilogue shows Natalia living with the Burtons, reading Kafka and smiling in a way that isn't hers. The game never confirms how much of Alex is in there, and no later story has picked it up. The Revelations 2 story page walks through both endings in full. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Outside the main story, Alex is one of the playable Masterminds in the 2020 multiplayer game Resident Evil: Resistance, setting traps for survivors. It's a side game, not a continuation of her story. (Resident Evil: Resistance)

Frequently asked questions

Is Alex Wesker related to Albert Wesker?
Not by blood. Both were children taken in by Oswell Spencer's Wesker Project and given the Wesker name. They were the only two who survived it, and the game treats them as something like siblings.
What did Alex Wesker want?
To cheat death. She was dying of an illness, so she built a system to transfer her mind into a younger body that couldn't feel fear. Her chosen vessel was Natalia Korda. Once she had a new body she meant to finish Spencer's plan for a new world, with herself as its god.
How does Alex Wesker die?
She shoots herself in the tower in 2011 but survives as a mutant. Six months later she injects herself with Uroboros. In the good ending Claire Redfield kills her with a rocket launcher; in the bad ending Natalia tears out her heart.
Is Natalia Alex Wesker?
At least partly. In the bad ending Natalia tells Barry to call her Alex. In the good ending she seems fine, but the epilogue shows her reading Kafka, Alex's favourite writer, with a cold smile.
Is Alex Wesker in Resident Evil 5?
Only on paper. A Resident Evil 5 file reporting Albert's apparent death in 1998 is signed "Alex W." of Umbrella's Information Department.
