Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Story Explained, Including Both Endings

The full story of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, from Claire and Moira's kidnapping to Barry's return to Sein Island six months later, with the good and bad endings and Natalia's final smile explained.

By Joe Garratt

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 came out in four weekly episodes in February and March 2015, followed by two short extra episodes. It's set in 2011, between Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, and tells two stories six months apart on the same island: Claire Redfield and Moira Burton's escape, then Barry Burton's search for his missing daughter. The game has two endings, and both are explained below, so the page has full spoilers. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Before the story begins#

By 2011 Claire worked for TerraSave, a non-governmental group that helped victims of bioterrorism. Moira Burton, Barry's elder daughter, had just joined. She and her father weren't speaking. Years earlier Moira had taken one of Barry's guns while playing at home and accidentally shot her little sister Polly, who survived, and since then she had refused to touch a firearm and blamed Barry for the guns being in the house at all. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The other piece is the Wesker family. Oswell E. Spencer had raised a group of gifted children under the Wesker name. Albert was one. Alex Wesker was another, a researcher who disappeared from Umbrella's records and was dying of an incurable illness. She was obsessed with Franz Kafka and with cheating death. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Claire and Moira: the penal colony#

Masked soldiers stormed TerraSave's welcome party and took the staff. Claire woke in a cell in a ruined prison with a bracelet locked to her wrist. She found Moira, and the two worked their way out while a woman's voice spoke to them through the bracelets, quoting Kafka. The prisoners were changing into savage creatures the survivors called the Afflicted. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The bracelets were part of the experiment. They tracked the wearer's fear, because Alex's new virus, t-Phobos, only woke up when its host was afraid. Every frightened captive was a test result. From the prison radio tower Claire and Moira learned they were on an island, and sent out a distress call that seemed hopeless. Moira kept refusing to use a gun, so she carried a torch and a crowbar while Claire did the shooting. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Wossek, Natalia and the escape that failed#

The Overseer pointed them towards a nearby fishing village, Wossek, where other TerraSave captives were hiding: Neil Fisher, Claire's colleague, along with Gabriel Chavez and Pedro Fernandez. Claire also spotted a young girl who ran from them. Moira calmed her, and she gave her name as Natalia Korda. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Gabriel's plan to escape in an old helicopter went wrong when the Overseer set off the town's alarm, drawing the Afflicted, and sabotaged the aircraft. Pedro and Gabriel both died. In the chaos, a figure carried Natalia away. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The survivors pushed on through a trap-filled industrial area towards a tower, the Overseer's base. Claire and Moira found evidence that their captor had studied them closely and had help from inside TerraSave. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Neil, Alex and the tower#

The traitor was Neil. A former FBC agent who had never forgiven the BSAA for absorbing his old agency, he had sold TerraSave's people to the Overseer in exchange for a sample of the Uroboros virus, the same agent Albert Wesker had planned to release in Africa. The Overseer, now revealed as Alex Wesker, gave him what he asked for by injecting him with it, and left him for Claire. Neil mutated into a huge Uroboros creature. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

What happened next decided the ending. If Moira found the nerve to pick up a gun and kill Neil, she broke her fear and the good ending followed. If Claire killed him instead, the story headed for the bad ending. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Higher in the tower, Alex had Natalia sealed in a pod and sent deep into the facility. She believed the girl was the perfect vessel for her mind, and that in six months Natalia would wake up as her. When Claire and Moira reached her, Alex talked about her brother Albert, raised a gun at Claire, then turned it on herself and fired. The tower began to self-destruct. Near the exit Moira was pinned under falling debris and told Claire to jump. Claire dropped into the sea and was picked up, badly hurt. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Barry: six months later#

Claire was taken to a mainland hospital and spent months recovering. When Moira's distress message finally reached Barry, six months on, he went to Sein Island alone. The first person he met was Natalia, who had woken up with no memory of what had been done to her and could sense where monsters were, even invisible ones. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Natalia led Barry to the ruined tower, where they found a painting of Albert Wesker with a blonde woman. Then a hooded figure appeared. It was Alex. Her suicide attempt had failed, and t-Phobos had left her mutated. She told Barry she had killed Moira and buried her, and set new creatures, the Revenants, on them. Barry and Natalia escaped. Carrying Natalia on his back, Barry told her about Polly's accident and admitted he had driven Moira away. He resolved to protect Natalia as he hadn't protected his daughter. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The pair crossed the mines and Wossek with Alex stalking them. When Alex finally cornered Natalia, she fled in terror instead of attacking, and Natalia began guiding Barry through places she couldn't remember ever seeing. Alex sent warnings through Natalia's bracelet, but Barry pushed on to her hideout, where she injected herself with the last of the Uroboros and mutated again. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Moira's missing months: The Struggle and Little Miss#

The extra episode The Struggle shows what happened to Moira. Evgeny Rebic, an old islander who had survived the outbreak alone, dug her out of the rubble. He let her stay if she followed his rules and joined his hunts. Over six months they scraped by, until food ran low and they found a list of villagers sent to the mines for experiments. One name was Evgeny's daughter, Irina. They found her last letter, and Evgeny, broken and sick, shut himself away to die. Moira kept going, and the episode ends with her walking in on Alex attacking Barry and Natalia. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Little Miss covers Natalia's waking. A dark copy of herself, the remnant of Alex inside her, tried to wear her down and take over while she searched the island for a friend called Lottie. Natalia refused, the trap failed, and she made her way to the docks just as Barry arrived. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The ending explained#

Good ending. Moira, alive, shot Alex just as she was about to kill Natalia. Barry got the two girls out to a cliff edge, cornered by the still-mutating Alex, when a helicopter arrived with a recovered Claire on board. Moira and Natalia climbed in, and Barry stayed to fight on with Claire supporting from the air, and at Barry's call Claire finished Alex with a rocket launcher. The BSAA moved in to clear the island. Barry and Moira were reconciled. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

The epilogue is set in 2013. Claire drove to the Burton home with a present for Natalia, now living with the family, and passed on a message that Chris was heading to China to deal with an outbreak, the events of Resident Evil 6. Upstairs, Natalia read Kafka, Alex's author, and smiled in a way that wasn't Natalia's. The suggestion is that Alex's consciousness survived inside her after all. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2; Resident Evil 6)

Bad ending. If Moira never picked up the gun, the collapse in the tower killed her. On Barry's side, Alex crushed Natalia until she passed out. Natalia then woke, cut off Alex's hand and tore out her heart. When a shaken Barry asked what she was, she said she wasn't Natalia; she was Alex. She walked away, and Barry couldn't bring himself to shoot her. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Both endings say the same thing in different volumes. Alex's plan to move her mind into Natalia worked at least in part, and the good ending only hides it better. The question of what Natalia became has never been picked up by a later game. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2)

Where it fits#

Revelations 2 is one of the last stories in the old continuity before the series jumped to new faces. Its epilogue runs straight into Resident Evil 6 in 2013. The earlier spin-off, set in 2005 with Jill and Chris on the Queen Zenobia, is covered in the Resident Evil: Revelations story, and the series moves to Ethan Winters and the Baker house in the Resident Evil 7 story. For the whole chronology, see the Resident Evil timeline. (Resident Evil: Revelations 2; Resident Evil 6)

Frequently asked questions

How do you get the good ending in Revelations 2?
Have Moira shoot the mutated Neil Fisher at the end of Episode 3. That leads to the good ending, in which Moira survives, the last boss fight plays out and the 2013 epilogue follows. If Claire kills Neil, you get the shorter bad ending.
Does Moira Burton die in Revelations 2?
Only in the bad ending. In the good ending she's trapped under rubble when the tower collapses, is rescued by the island's last survivor, Evgeny Rebic, and lives there for six months before saving Barry and Natalia from Alex.
Is Natalia Alex Wesker at the end of Revelations 2?
Partly, in both endings. In the bad ending Natalia kills Alex and says outright that she is Alex. In the good ending she seems normal, but the epilogue shows her reading Kafka, Alex's favourite author, and smiling coldly, which suggests Alex's mind survives inside her.
Who is the Overseer in Revelations 2?
Alex Wesker, one of the children raised in Oswell Spencer's Wesker project. Dying of a terminal illness, she kidnapped people to Sein Island to test the fear-driven t-Phobos virus and find a body to move her mind into.
When does Revelations 2 take place?
In 2011, between Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. Claire's story happens first, Barry's six months later, and the epilogue in 2013 runs alongside Resident Evil 6.
Why did Neil Fisher betray TerraSave?
Neil was a former FBC agent who blamed the BSAA and wanted power of his own. He sold TerraSave's members to Alex Wesker in exchange for a sample of the Uroboros virus, and Alex injected him with it.
