Mother Miranda: the Villain of Resident Evil Village and Spencer's Teacher
Mother Miranda is the shapeshifting priestess who rules the village in Resident Evil Village, a grieving mother who found the Mold in 1919 and spent a century trying to bring her daughter back. She also taught Umbrella's founder. Here is her story and how she dies.
Mother Miranda is the main villain of Resident Evil Village, the priestess who rules a snowbound European village through her four Lords and the religion she built around the Mold. She's a mother who lost her child in 1919 and refused to accept it, and she's also the woman who taught Oswell E. Spencer the ideas that became Umbrella. (Resident Evil Village)
Who is Mother Miranda?#
Miranda was a woman from an isolated farming village in Eastern Europe. In 1919 the Spanish flu reached the village and killed so many that the cemetery overflowed. Miranda's young daughter Eva was one of them. (Resident Evil Village)
Miranda went into a cave intending to end her life. Instead she found the Mold, an ancient fungal mass under the mountain. When she touched it she saw the memories of everyone it had absorbed over the centuries. Eva was there, taken in after her burial. Miranda decided she could get her daughter back, and began worshipping the Mold as the Black God. (Resident Evil Village)
Building the village#
She came back with the Mold in her, used it to cure sick villagers and presented the cures as miracles. The village turned from its church to her new faith and started calling her Mother. Under the ceremony site she set up labs and spent decades experimenting on her own people. (Resident Evil Village)
Her main tool was the Cadou, a parasite she altered with the Mold. Most people implanted with it died or turned into Lycans. A few descendants of the area's old noble houses survived with powers: Alcina Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau and Karl Heisenberg. None could host Eva, but Miranda kept them as her four Lords. Heisenberg came to hate her for it. (Resident Evil Village)
She also hid in plain sight. The old woman villagers saw as a harmless madwoman, muttering prayers about Mother Miranda, was Miranda herself. (Resident Evil Village)
Spencer, Umbrella and Eveline#
Years later a young Oswell Spencer got lost near the village. Miranda saved him, and he stayed for a time as her pupil; his letter to her thanks her for all she taught him. He was amazed by the idea of changing a human with an implanted organism, but their goals split. She wanted Eva; he wanted to remake humanity. He left, and wrote to tell her he had found the Progenitor virus in Africa and would start a company called Umbrella, tied to a symbol in the cave the two had talked about. (Resident Evil Village)
Later, the bioweapons syndicate The Connections approached her. She gave them a Mold sample and an embryo carrying Eva's genes, and oversaw the creation of Eveline, the girl-shaped bioweapon who later infected the Baker family in Louisiana. That's why Chris Redfield had been looking for Miranda since Resident Evil 7. (Resident Evil Village; Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Taking Rose (Resident Evil Village, 2021)#
Eveline died in 2017, but Ethan and Mia Winters had both been infected and later had a daughter, Rose. A Connections mole told Miranda where they were hiding. Rose, a child born to two Mold-infected parents, looked like the host Miranda had wanted for a century. (Resident Evil Village)
Miranda kidnapped Mia, copied her and moved into the Winters' home wearing Mia's face. When Chris Redfield came for her and shot her, she played dead, then killed the soldiers in the transport and took Rose to the village. She had the baby crystallised and split into four flasks, one for each Lord, and set the Lycans on the village to feed the Mold for her ritual. (Resident Evil Village)
As the old woman she pointed Ethan towards each Lord, using him to clear out servants she no longer needed. When he'd killed Heisenberg, she showed herself and tore out his heart. (Resident Evil Village)
How does Mother Miranda die?#
Miranda took Rose's reassembled body to the ceremony site and began the ritual, but Rose resisted and drained some of her power. Ethan came back, alive thanks to his own Mold body. Miranda grew wings and claws and fought him, but without her full regeneration she began to calcify, and she died crying out Eva's name. Ethan's bomb destroyed the Mold beneath the village soon after. (Resident Evil Village)
Shadows of Rose (2037)#
The BSAA had recovered a piece of the Mold, and Miranda's consciousness lived on inside it. Sixteen years later she lured a teenage Rose into it, still wanting her as Eva's vessel. With the help of what was left of her father, Rose turned her powers on Miranda and wiped her out for good. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)
