The Mold and the Megamycete: Resident Evil 7 and Village's Fungus Explained

The Mold is the fungus behind Resident Evil 7 and Village, and the Megamycete is the giant organism it all comes from. Here is where it began, how it controls people, what it creates, and why Ethan Winters was never quite human again.

By Joe Garratt

The Mold is the fungus behind Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village. It spreads by spores, takes over its host's cells and can tie whole groups of infected people into a single network that one mind controls. All of it comes from the Megamycete, a vast fungal organism under a remote Eastern European village. Like Las Plagas, it has no link to the Progenitor virus behind Umbrella's work. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil Village)

Where the Mold comes from: the Megamycete#

The Mold comes from one giant organism. Village's files describe the Megamycete, a fungal mass that grew under the mountains near the village for an unknown span of time. The villagers worshipped it as the Black God. Anyone who touched it could see the memories of everyone it had ever absorbed. (Resident Evil Village)

In 1919, a local scientist named Miranda lost her daughter Eva to the Spanish flu. Wandering in grief, she found the Megamycete's cave and was infected. Instead of killing her, it gave her power, and she became Mother Miranda, the village's goddess. She spent the next hundred years experimenting on the villagers, trying to find a body that could hold Eva's memories. (Resident Evil Village)

How the Mold works#

The Mold enters as spores. Inside the body it grows a mass in the brain and then begins replacing the host's cells with fungal copies that look and work almost exactly the same. Resident Evil 7's lab reports describe this in the language of the Connections' scientists. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)

That copying is why the Mold is so strange. A host can survive wounds that should kill them, regrow severed limbs, or turn into something huge. Ethan's severed hand is simply stapled back on in Resident Evil 7 and works again, and Village explains why. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil Village)

The Mold also links its hosts together. The infected share a kind of network, and a strong enough controller can push thoughts, visions and orders through it. Eveline uses this to drive the Bakers mad and to appear to Ethan as hallucinations. Miranda uses it to split herself into a flock of crows. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil Village)

What the Mold creates#

The full monster guide lists every creature. These are the main Mold ones.

  • Molded: the black fungal monsters that fill the Baker house, grown from fungus fed with bodies. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
  • Eveline: a child bioweapon built by the Connections to control the infected. Her real body is aging fast, which is why she appears to Ethan as both a little girl and an old woman. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
  • The Bakers: Jack, Marguerite and Lucas, ordinary people driven to murder by Eveline. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
  • The four lords: Lady Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau and Karl Heisenberg, the villagers who survived Miranda's experiments with Mold-based parasites called Cadou. (Resident Evil Village)
  • Lycans and other village creatures: the beasts that hunt Ethan in Village. (Resident Evil Village)
  • Dimitrescu's daughters: three women who can dissolve into swarms of flies. (Resident Evil Village)

The Connections and Eveline#

The Mold became a weapon much later. The Connections, a crime syndicate selling bioweapons, got samples from Miranda and built a project around them. Resident Evil 7's files say they grew human bioweapons from infected embryos, each generation better at controlling the fungus. The E-series came last, and the first, E-001, was Eveline. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil Village)

In 2014 Eveline was being shipped on a tanker called the Annabelle when she broke loose. Mia Winters, who was secretly a Connections agent assigned to watch her, was infected. The ship washed up in the Louisiana bayou, and Eveline found a new family in the Bakers. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)

Louisiana: the Baker house, 2014 to 2017#

For three years the Bakers kidnapped and killed people under Eveline's control. In 2017 Ethan Winters came looking for Mia. He fought through the family, made the serum that could hurt Eveline, and killed her with it. The Resident Evil 7 story page covers it in full. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)

Chris Redfield arrived at the end with a reformed Umbrella. Not a Hero follows him into the salt mine after Lucas, and End of Zoe has Jack's brother Joe fighting the Mold creatures still spreading through the swamp. (Resident Evil 7: Not a Hero; Resident Evil 7: End of Zoe)

The village, 2021#

Three years later Miranda took Rosemary, Ethan and Mia's baby, to the village. Rose had been born with Mold powers from both parents, and Miranda saw her as the perfect vessel for Eva. (Resident Evil Village)

Village's biggest reveal is about Ethan himself. Jack Baker had killed him early in Resident Evil 7. The Mold had kept him going ever since, which is why he could survive so much. Ethan beat Miranda and got Rose back, then stayed behind as Chris's bomb destroyed the Megamycete. The Village story covers it. (Resident Evil Village)

The village also ties the Mold to Umbrella's beginning. Spencer's letter to Miranda shows he learned from her before he founded his company, and ties the company he called Umbrella to a symbol in the cave the two had talked about. (Resident Evil Village)

Shadows of Rose#

The Mold still has one last chapter. Shadows of Rose, set 16 years after Village, follows a teenage Rose as she enters the consciousness held inside a surviving fragment of the Megamycete, hoping to get rid of her powers. She finds the memories of the village, Miranda and her father waiting there. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)

Is the Mold a virus?
No. It is a fungus. Like Las Plagas, it has no link to the Progenitor virus that the T-virus and G-virus come from.
Was Ethan Winters dead the whole time?
Yes. Village reveals Jack Baker killed Ethan early in Resident Evil 7, and the Mold rebuilt and kept him going from then on.
How is the Mold connected to Umbrella?
