Karl Heisenberg: the Rebel Lord of Resident Evil Village

Karl Heisenberg is the metal-bending engineer among Mother Miranda's four Lords in Resident Evil Village, and the only one who wanted her dead. Here is who he is, what his powers do, why he tried to recruit Ethan, and how he dies.

By Joe Garratt

Karl Heisenberg is one of Mother Miranda's four Lords in Resident Evil Village, a sharp-tongued engineer who can control metal and runs a factory of half-machine monsters. He's also the only Lord who hates Miranda, and he spends the game trying to get Ethan Winters on his side. (Resident Evil Village)

Who is Karl Heisenberg?#

Heisenberg is the master of one of the four noble houses that rule the land around the village under Miranda, alongside Lady Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento and Salvatore Moreau. He works out of a vast factory beyond the village, wears a long coat, hat and round glasses, and carries a huge hammer. He talks constantly, mocks everyone, and looks down on the other Lords, Dimitrescu most of all. (Resident Evil Village)

He's a Lord because he survived. Miranda implanted villagers with the Cadou, a parasite she altered with the Mold, hoping to find a body that could host her dead daughter Eva. Most died or became Lycans. Heisenberg lived, came out with powers, and failed Miranda's test anyway, so she kept him as a servant. (Resident Evil Village)

What are Heisenberg's powers?#

The Cadou gave him control over metal. He can pull iron to him, throw scrap through the air, pin Ethan in place and shape steel at will. In his final form he drags together the machinery of his factory into a giant body with a huge spinning blade at its front. (Resident Evil Village)

His factory is where he put that power to work. He made Soldats, corpses rebuilt with machinery, drills and propellers and brought back with Cadou, and bigger experiments such as Sturm, a man fused to a giant propeller engine. They were meant to be his army against Miranda. (Resident Evil Village)

Heisenberg and Ethan#

Heisenberg catches Ethan early on, on his way to the castle, pins him and drags him before Miranda and the Lords. He argues for the right to deal with the outsider and wins, then turns him loose in a mine full of Lycans as a show for the others. Ethan escapes. (Resident Evil Village)

Later, after Ethan has killed Dimitrescu, Beneviento and Moreau, Heisenberg starts talking to him through screens and points him towards the last flask holding part of Rose Winters. Then he invites him to the factory. On his wall are photos of the other Lords and of Mia, crossed out. (Resident Evil Village)

Why does Heisenberg hate Miranda?#

Because she treated the Lords as experiments, not family. Heisenberg tells Ethan that Miranda had been using him to clear out the Lords one by one, and that he would be next. He wants to be free of her, and he wants power enough to destroy her. (Resident Evil Village)

His plan was Rose. He offered Ethan a partnership: together they would use Rose's power as a weapon to kill Miranda. Ethan, who had come to save his daughter, not to weaponise her, said he'd take his chances alone. Heisenberg dropped him into the depths of the factory to die. (Resident Evil Village)

How does Heisenberg die?#

Ethan fought his way back up, killing Sturm on the way, and met Chris Redfield in the factory vents. Chris was planting explosives and had prepared a tank-like vehicle Heisenberg himself had built, which he gave to Ethan. (Resident Evil Village)

Heisenberg met him outside in a gigantic machine of scrap with himself inside. Chris's bombs went off and destroyed the factory and the army he'd been building. Furious, Heisenberg kept fighting, but Ethan blew the machine apart. Heisenberg died still insisting he had to kill Miranda, and his body crystallised. Miranda appeared to Ethan moments later and tore out his heart. (Resident Evil Village)

Heisenberg after Village#

Heisenberg's story ends in 2021, but he came back as a playable character in the extra modes of the Winters' Expansion, which added him, Lady Dimitrescu and Chris to The Mercenaries. That mode is not part of the story. (Resident Evil Village: Winters' Expansion)

For the rest of the Lords and where they came from, see the Resident Evil Village story and the monster guide. (Resident Evil Village)
