Rose Winters: Ethan's Daughter, From Resident Evil Village to Shadows of Rose

Rose Winters is the daughter of Ethan and Mia Winters, kidnapped as a baby in Resident Evil Village and the lead of its expansion, Shadows of Rose. Here is why Miranda wanted her, what her powers are, and what happens to her as a teenager.

By Joe Garratt

Rose Winters is the daughter of Ethan Winters and Mia Winters, the baby Mother Miranda kidnaps at the start of Resident Evil Village. Ethan dies saving her. Sixteen years later she becomes a lead in her own right in the Shadows of Rose expansion, a teenager trying to get rid of the powers that made her a target. (Resident Evil Village; Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)

Who is Rose Winters?#

Rose was born after the events of Resident Evil 7, when the BSAA had moved Ethan and Mia to Europe under protection. Village opens with the family at home, Mia reading baby Rose a local folk tale about a village of shadows. (Resident Evil Village)

Her parents weren't ordinary, and neither is she. Both had been infected with the Mold in Louisiana, and Ethan's body had been entirely rebuilt by it. Rose was born with an unusual bond with the fungus, which is what made her valuable to people like Miranda. (Resident Evil Village)

Why did Mother Miranda want Rose?#

Miranda had spent a century trying to bring back her daughter Eva, who died in 1919. She needed a body that could hold Eva's memories from the Mold, and every candidate failed, including the four Lords and Eveline, the bioweapon she helped the Connections make. Rose, a child born of two Mold hosts, looked like the answer. Miranda tells Ethan that Rose is a far better successor to Eveline than Eveline ever was. (Resident Evil Village)

The four flasks (Resident Evil Village, 2021)#

Miranda took Mia's place in the Winters home wearing her face. When Chris Redfield's team raided the house and shot her, she played dead, then escaped with Rose to the village. There Rose was crystallised and divided into four flasks, one for each Lord: Lady Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau and Karl Heisenberg. (Resident Evil Village)

Ethan fought his way to each flask. The merchant called the Duke told him that as long as all four were recovered, Rose could still be saved. Heisenberg wanted Rose too, as a weapon to kill Miranda, and Ethan refused him. (Resident Evil Village)

Rose and Miranda's ritual#

Miranda gathered the flasks and began her ceremony to bring Eva back through Rose. It didn't work. The child who emerged was Rose, not Eva, and Rose resisted and drained some of Miranda's strength. Ethan, revived after Miranda tore out his heart, killed her and freed his daughter. (Resident Evil Village)

With his body failing, Ethan handed Rose to Chris, told him to keep her safe, and set off the bomb on the Megamycete. Chris carried Rose to Mia. In the post-credits scene, years later, a grown Rose visits her father's grave. A government agent jokingly calls her Eveline, and she grabs him with a flash of her strength. (Resident Evil Village)

Shadows of Rose (2037)#

Rose grew up under government protection, watched by Chris and his people, and bullied at school because of her powers. As a teenager she hated what she was. When she learned that a crystal in the consciousness stored inside a recovered fragment of the Mold could remove her powers, she went in. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)

She woke in a twisted copy of Castle Dimitrescu, hunted by faceless Mold creatures and a masked version of the Duke. Golden writing on the walls guided her, signed by a protector she named Michael. At House Beneviento a remnant of Eveline tormented her. In a memory of her old family home she began to understand who her father was, and worked out that Michael was Ethan, or the part of him the Mold had kept. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)

Behind it all was a stored copy of Miranda, still trying to use Rose as Eva's vessel. Rose reached the crystal and gave up her powers, but when Miranda attacked her father she took them back and destroyed Miranda for good. She shared a last moment with Ethan before waking, and chose to keep her abilities. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)

What are Rose's powers?#

In Shadows of Rose she uses them directly in a fight: she can hold Mold creatures in place and push them back, and burn away fungal growths blocking her path. In Village, as a baby, her power shows up as resistance, enough to stop Miranda's ritual from working. (Resident Evil Village; Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)

For now, Rose's story ends with Shadows of Rose. The series' next main game, Resident Evil Requiem, follows Grace Ashcroft and Leon instead. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose; Resident Evil Requiem)
